International Mountain Day
Did you know that 11 December is International Mountain Day? It's a day to celebrate mountains and the people who
live in mountainous areas. We asked three teenagers to tell us about a mountain that they know.
Tricia
Last year I watched a very interesting movie about a man who climbed mountains. He has climbed the highest
mountains in the world, but when he was younger, he trained by climbing a mountain only a few kilometres from where
I live! There is a train which goes all the way to the top! It’s great at the top, and there’s even a little café there. I got
some postcards! Of course, there are difficult paths going up the mountain, but on the other side.
Rachel
My brother lives in the Japanese city of Tokyo, near one of the most famous mountains in the world. It's Mount Fuji,
and you can see it from Tokyo. Last summer I went there with him. It’s only possible to climb up the mountain in the
summer because there is snow at other times of the year. It was sunny at the top and I got some amazing photos.
Greg
I often go to a little town in the south of France. It's not far from some mountains. There’s a mountain there called Mont
Ventoux, and it’s very high. You can see it from all over the countryside. It’s famous for people who want to train to do
the Tour de France – the famous bike race. Once, I was driving up the mountain with my father, and we were stuck
behind about ten or twenty cyclists. It was amazing that they could cycle so high up a mountain.
