In these questions, three of four words are given in code.

The codes are not written in the same order as the words and one code is missing.
Choose the correct answer to each question and mark it on your answer sheet.

Example BOIL MEAL SLIM MESS

4133 4158 2678

Solution To answer this question, you have to work out which number
represents each letter. Begin by focusing on numbers that appear
more than once. If the numbers appear in the same position in
two of the codes, you might be able to spot the same pattern in
the letters.
For example, the numbers 4 and 1 appear in 1st and 2nd position
respectively in two number codes: 4133 and 4158.
There are only two words that start with the same two letters:
MEAL and MESS. Therefore, the number 4 must stand for the
letter M and the number 1 must stand for the letter E.
Comparing the two codes and words, 4133 = MESS and
4158 = MEAL. Using this information, we can establish what other
letters stand for and answer further questions on missing words
or codes.

In these questions, letters stand for numbers.

Work out the answer to each calculation, then find its letter and mark it on
your answer sheet.

Example If A = 1, B = 3, C = 4, D = 5, E = 10,
what is the answer to this calculation written as a letter?

A+C+D=[?]

A A B B C C D D E E

Answer E

Solution In this question, A = 1, B = 3, C = 4, D = 5, E = 10. If we

convert the letters into numbers, the answer to the calculation is
1 + 4 + 5 = 10. We can see that E = 10, therefore, the answer
to this calculation written as a letter is E.

If A = 3, B = 4, C = 7, D = 12, E = 23,
31 what is the answer to this calculation written as a letter?

E౼C౼D÷A=[?]

A A B B C C D D E E

32 If A = 2, B = 5, C = 8, D = 11, E = 15,
what is the answer to this calculation written as a letter?

(D + E) ÷ (C + B) = [ ? ]

A A B B C C D D E E

If A = 3, B = 5, C = 10, D = 20, E = 45,

33 what is the answer to this calculation written as a letter?

E౼A×B౼C=[?]

A A B B C C D D E E

If A = 3, B = 4, C = 7, D = 16, E = 22,
34 what is the answer to this calculation written as a letter?

B + (D ౼ C) + A = [ ? ]

A A B B C C D D E E

35 If A = 1, B = 3, C = 8, D = 11, E = 30,
what is the answer to this calculation written as a letter?

(E + B) ÷ D = [ ? ]

A A B B C C D D E E

36 If A = 5, B = 15, C = 20, D = 25, E = 60,

what is the answer to this calculation written as a letter?

In these questions, the three numbers in each group are related in the
same way.
Find the number that completes the last group and mark it on the answer sheet.

Example (4 [ 8 ] 2) (3 [ 15 ] 5) (6 [ ? ] 3)

A 3 B 6 C 12 D 14 E 18

Answer 18

Solution In the first two groups, the number in square brackets is

produced by multiplying the two numbers on either side, i.e.
4  2 = 8 and 3  5 = 15. Therefore, the number that completes
the last group in the same way is 6  3 = 18.
