LCI 505 - LABOUR LAW I

2024/2025 SESSION

INTRODUCTION
This course introduces the students to Nigerian Labour Law. Labour Law is concerned with
the law regulating the affairs of an employee with that of the employer. The course examines
employer/employee relationship in Nigeria and the way by which labour law is put into use in
a democratic and law governed society.
The course will be assessed using continuous assessment tests/term paper and an examination
at the end of the semester.
TYPICAL LEARNER CHARACTERISTICS
This is an optional course and it is expected that students desiring to register for the course
should have an interest in employment and labour law. Being a final year course, students
should be capable of carrying out independent detailed research into the various relevant
National legislative instruments, Regional and International Conventions.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
(1) To enable students, have a good grasp of the nature, history, sources and scope
of labour law in Nigeria;
(2) To afford students the understanding of the legal rules and principles regulating
the nature, formation, contents, performance, termination, breaches and remedies
of breaches of employment contracts in Nigeria; and
(3) To familiarise students with the legal provisions for safety and health at work
and the remedies that may avail upon default.
EXPECTED OUTCOME
By the end of this course, it is expected that students will be able to:
(1) discuss the nature, history, sources and scope of labour law in Nigeria;
(2) enumerate legal rules and principles regulating the nature, formation, contents,
performance, termination, breaches and remedies of breaches of employment contracts in
Nigeria; and
(3) assess the legal provisions for safety and health at work and the remedies that may
avail upon default.
