CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

I. Background of the Study

High school students use social media to communicate with classmates. It is also
used when academic performances are conducted. The social media platforms help
improve the students' academic performance and increase their knowledge through
gathering data and information. Students visit various online platforms to gather
information to solve their assignments (De La Cruz, 2017).

It has also been observed locally that the majority of the students nowadays,
particularly those in the secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with their
acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of reading their
lessons, making their assignments, and other academic requirements. The main reason
is when they work and research their materials online, they get attracted to social
networking sites to kill boredom during study time, diverting their attention from their
work. The darker side of this that has gained the attention of many parents is that some
students are getting lazier and are no longer interested in going to school
(Astodello,2016). The Department of Information and Communication Technology
(DICT,2019) said that students are more likely to be bullied (cyberbullied) when asked
to post their works on social media sites.

According to Reje D. Astodello (2016), people all over the world have been
enjoying the benefits of using technology nowadays. In the past, communicating and
free sharing of thought were restricted by long distance, race, and even religion. But
now these barriers can no longer stop the flow of information and knowledge because
now the new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts through online
social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the like.

If not addressed, this leads to long-term effects on students' emotional well-being

and their social confidence. Peer pressure on social media can also lead to
cyberbullying, where students experience emotional distress due to negative comments,
exclusion, or online harassment (Hinduja & Patchin, 2018). The increasing influence of
social media on students’ lives has raised concerns about its effects on their behaviour,
emotional well-being, and social interactions. If not properly managed, excessive use of
social media can lead to distractions, procrastination, and a decline in academic
performance. Without proper guidance, students may develop unhealthy social
behaviours that affect their personal development and long-term social growth.

This study will be conducted at Poblacion, Bontoc, Mountain Province, specifically

targeting high school students in Saint Vincent’s School Inc. (SVSI) wherein, 72% of
high school students in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) spend most of their time
on social media.

This study aims to explore the effects of social media on the social behaviour of
high school students at Saint Vincent’s School Incorporated. Furthermore, the influence
of social media on students extends beyond personal interactions and also affects their
academic performance and self-discipline. Excessive social media use can lead to
distractions, procrastination, and decreased academic performance. However, there are
students who use social media for educational purposes, joining study groups and
accessing learning materials, which can enhance their knowledge.

The overall purpose of the research described above is to investigate and

understand the impacts of social media on the social behaviour of high school students
in SVSI. By examining this relationship, the researchers aim to explore factors that
influence high school students' social behaviors, particularly during their years when
they are still developing. Ultimately, the researchers seek to determine how social
media shapes highschool students' social behavior like their communicational and
interaction skills and their behavior patterns. This research will also provide insights on
both the positive and negative effects of social media. Additionally, the research will
also propose some recommendations such as encouraging students to engage in
community programs and extracurricular activities which can also help them develop
real-world social skills
II. Review of Related Literature

According from Business Insider, Michelle Obama shared her approach to

managing social media and maintaining mental well-being during a live taping of her
"IMO" podcast at SXSW. She emphasized avoiding negative aspects of social media by
not engaging with comment sections, which are often filled with untrue statements from
unfamiliar individuals. This approach helped her and her family remain hopeful and
sane despite facing negative rumors and energy during their public life.

An article discussed how social media usage affects teenagers' mental health,
highlighting issues such as anxiety, depression, and insecurity. The study emphasized
that excessive social media use could lead to negative self-comparison and reduced in-
person communication skills among adolescents. (Ehmke, 2024)

Iwamoto and Chun (2020). In their exploratory study, "The Emotional Impact of
Social Media in Higher Education," the authors examined the relationship between
social media use and its impact on depression, anxiety, and stress among students in
higher education. The study highlighted that excessive social media use could lead to
negative emotional outcomes.

This systematic review examined the effects of social media on young people's
mental health, focusing on depression, anxiety, and psychological distress. The study
found that excessive use of social media platforms is associated with increased levels
of these negative affective states among adolescents. (Keles et al., 2020)

Viner et al. (2019) explored the differential impact of social media use on middle
and high school students. The findings indicated that excessive social media usage was
associated with increased rates of depression and anxiety, particularly among high
school students, suggesting a need for moderated use.
Both Talatu Ibrahim Umar and Murja Idris investigated theinfluence of social
media on psychosocial behavior and academic performance among secondary school
students in Nigeria. The findings revealed that social media usage negatively affected
students' social interactions and academic achievements, leading to reduced face-to-
face communication and lower academic performance. (Umar & Idris, 2018)

In the study of Diadi and Garcia, "Social Media Networking and Self-Esteem
Among Junior High School Students," Diadi and Garcia investigated the extent of social
networking and its relationship with self-esteem among junior high school students in
Cordon, Isabela, for the School Year 2023-2024. The research revealed extensive
social networking usage for various purposes, highlighting its role in communication,
information sharing, and academic collaboration. The study also uncovered nuanced
levels of self-esteem among respondents, with diverse associations between social
networking behaviors and dimensions of self-esteem, emphasizing the complex
interplay between online activities and self-perception. (Diadi, A. D., & Garcia, G. D.,
2024)

The research titled "Utilization of Social Media and its Effects on Students'
Psychosocial Behavior and Academic Performance" focused on determining whether
social media utilization significantly influences the academic performance and
psychosocial behavior of junior high school students. The study found that while
students sometimes use social media for academic purposes, excessive use could
harm their well-being. (Guevarra, D. F.,2021)

The study called "Social Media Addiction Among Senior High School Learners"
aimed to profile and identify the extent of social media addiction among senior high
school students at Butuan City School of Arts and Trade. It was found that 294 out of
513 students are social media addicts, with most using Facebook. The majority of social
media addicts are female, grade 12 students, and 18 years of age. (Mindajao, B.
Y.,2021).

Mary Ann Santos examined the impact of social media on the behaviour of Grade
10 students at Lipahan National High School. The study concluded that excessive social
media use led to increased anxiety, depression, and engagement in risky behaviours
among students. (Santos, M. A., 2023)

University of Bohol Study (2023). Their research explored the relationship

between social media usage and self-esteem among Grade 9 and Grade 10 junior high
school students at the University of Bohol. The study aimed to determine the level of
student engagement on social media and its effects on self-esteem, considering factors
such as performance, social interactions, and appearance.

In the article "Impact of Social Media on Students' Lives, Academic Performance,"

Astodello discusses observations from Grades 7 and 8 students at Tabuk City National
High School. The study notes that while social media can facilitate communication and
access to educational resources, excessive use may lead to reduced academic
performance and diminished interest in school activities. (Astodello, 2016)

The study "The Effects of Social Media on the Academic Performance of Grade 7
Students at Amparo High School" investigates how social media usage affects students'
academic achievements. The findings suggest that while social media can be a tool for
academic support, excessive use may lead to distractions and negatively impact study
habits. (Dalapo et al.,2019)

The research titled "The Effects of Social Media on the Study Habits of Selected
Junior High School Students of ETTMNHS SY 2018-2019" examines how social media
influences students' study routines. The study concludes that overuse of social media
can negatively affect study habits, leading to poorer academic performance. (Bacarisas
et al.2019)

In the paper "Effects of Social Media on Class Performance of Senior High

School Learners in St. Augustine Institute of Pampanga," Carreon explores the
relationship between social media usage and classroom performance. The study
highlights that while social media can provide educational content, excessive use may
