The structure shown in Figure 1 is composed of beam ABDE that is attached to pin support at A
and link BC. Beam ABDE is subjected to a uniform distributed load of intensity 𝑊 = 40𝑁/𝑚 and
a concentrated force of 60N.
a) Draw the free-body diagram of beam ABDE. (2 pts)
b) Prove that the vertical reaction at pin A is: 𝑨𝒚 = 𝟏𝟎 𝑵 downwards and also calculate the
horizontal component at A as well as the force in link BD . (3 pts)
c) Find the internal forces (N, V, and M) at point D which is located at a distance 1m
from the edge of the beam as shown. (3 pts)
d) Deduce the reactions at point C? (2 pts)

For the structure shown in Figure 2 below,
a) Consider the equilibrium of the whole structural system and prove that the reactions at
rocker A is (RA=316.67N upwards) and at hinged support E are (XE=200N right and
YE=66.67N downward). (3 pts)
b) Draw the free-body diagrams of members FBD, ABC, and CDE; Knowing that B, C, and D
are internal hinges. (2 pts)
c) Based on the free-body diagrams drawn in previous part, determine the vertical and
horizontal components of the internal reactions at the internal hinge C.
Hint: Start with equilibrium of member FBD. (5 pts)
