Large cities often have problems that small towns and rural areas do not have. Two of the biggest
problems are heavy traffic and the pollution that cars create. Of course, traffic problems and pollution are
not only found in big cities. However, the higher populations and larger number of cars on the roads in cities
can make the problems happen more often and with more noticeable effects.
One of the most common traffic problems the large cities have is congestion. As the population of a
city increases, so does the number of cars on the road. Cities cannot always improve the number and size of
their roads and highways to keep up with the number of cars. The result is traffic congestion, or traffic jams.
When traffic jams happen, cars that are stuck in the congestion continue to run their engines. This
creates pollution and is a big problem. Pollution causes health problems for the people in cities and also
hurts the environment.
1. Where do traffic problems and pollution frequently happen?
A. Small towns B. Rural areas C. Big cities D. Remote villages
2. According to the passage, what causes traffic congestion in big cities?
A. A lot of city highways. B. Too many cars on the roads.

Exercise 8: Read the following text and decide whether the following statements are true or false.
Have you ever read Alice In Wonderland, by Lewis Carol? I did and I really like it. It’s an adventure
story full of magic and danger. Yesterday I saw Tim Burton’s version of the film at the cinema.
This story is about Alice, who is now a teenager. A man wants to marry her, but she runs away and
falls down a rabbit hole. She travels to Wonderland, which she has visited before as a child, and meets a lot
of amazing characters on her adventures.
There are a lot of good special effects in the film. The Red Queen, played by Helena Bonham Carter,
is very scary, and Johnny Depp is brilliant as the Mad Hatter. He has acted in a lot of films before but this is
my favourite one. Mia Waslkowska is good as Alice; this is her first big film and I think she’s going to
become a big star!
Overall, I think this is a good film for teenagers, but it’s a bit long. You should see it if you like
fantasy and adventure, but don’t go if you like romances: it’s not a love story.

Movies, also known as films, have several genres, but they are made in a similar way. Basically, a
screenwriter writes a script, which is the story of the movie with words that the actors and actresses will say.
Actors, actresses and directors read scripts to find out what to say and what to do. The actors and actresses
memorize the words and learn the actions from the script that they will say and do in the movie. The director
tells the actors and actresses what to do and a cameraman takes motion pictures of them.
When filming has finished, an editor puts the moving pictures together. Audio engineers record music and
singing and join it with the moving pictures. When the the movie is done, many copies of the movie are
made and sent to cinemas. An electric machine called a projector shines a very bright light through the
movie, and people sitting in a dark room see it on a big screen. After movies are shown on movie screens for
