Frankenstein - Part 2.
9. Analyze the Title
Victor:
- European scientist
- ashamed of his creation
- creates one person
Prometheus:
- Greek hero
- steals fire
- tries to help his creation
- creates people
Both of them:
- oversteps
- punished
- goes again nature
10.
Victor Frankenstein and Prometheus have similar stories. They both go against nature
and overstep boundaries. Victor creates human life. Prometheus creates real humans
and steal fire for them. Both are punished. But they’re also different. Their stories
takes place in different countries and times. Prometheus loves people, tries to help
them, but Victor isn’t kind and helpful for his creature.
11.
I think that Marry Shelley included the alternate title of „The Modern Prometheus” to
turn on her story to a longer literary tradition. Thanks to parallels between
Frankenstein and Prometheus, authoress shows that people have tried to extension
their knowledge and go against nature for as long as they have been alive.
12. Analyze the Characters
Victor:
Self - pity: he doesn’t admit that all of his problems are of his own doing
Overly emotional: he gets sick when he is stressed out or upset; he reacts very
emotionally and violently to some situations
Self - importance: he thinks that he’s so inteligent that he has the right to create life
Monster:
Self - pity: he doesn’t take responsibility for killing people and blames Victor for
creating him
Overly emotional: he sometimes becomes so depressed and disturbed
Self - importance: he thinks that he deserves a companion, even though he’s a
murderer and quite possibly not capable of caring for anybody
13.
A) Victor and Prometheus are similar in that they are fictional characters. Mythology
shows that Prometheus made man of clay, and Victor created a monster.
B) The differences between these heroes are as follows: Wiktor created fankenstein
from human remains and was rejected from the rest of people because of his
appearance, and Prometheus created a man and taught him various things.
15.
Time: The novel takes place at the end of the 18th century.
Place: In Western Europe (mainly in Switzerland - Geneva and Lucerne) and in the
Arcitc Ocean.
16.
There are some suspicions as to the relationship of the work of Mary Shelley with the
German town of Frankenstein (now Ząbkowice Śląskie) in Lower Silesia and the
gravedigger scandal of 1606, which could have influenced to the writer. This could
explain the aetymology of the title and the analogy with the name of the place.
18. Analyze the Symbols
1. B) 2. A) 3. C)
19.
20. I believe that the danger of crossing the limits of human knowledge is the most
important symbol.
21. Analyze the Themes
- the consequences of going against nature:
„infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet”
„the wretch”
„dull yellow eye”
„yellow skin”
„watery eyes”
„ shrivelled complexion”
„horror and disgust filled my heart”
„unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created”
- the natural limits of human knowledge:
„the accidents of life are not so changeable as the feelings of human nature”
„ I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an
inanimate body”
„ for this I had deprived myself of rest and health”
„ I had desired it with an ardour that for exceeded moderation”
22. Creation of the world and comparision of Prometheus to Frankenstein
Creation of the world and acceptance of people because the theme of creating world
is very interesting and how people behave towards other people
24. In - Depth Analysis
- They are creators who disrespects human rights and they are punished.
- They are from different places and times. Frankenstein is interested in the
advancement knowledge and he didn’t know the feeling of love in relation to his
creature. He doesn’t teach it anything.
