Section A ( 45 marks)
Answer all questions in this section.
1. The table below shows the weights (in grams) of several metal samples, measured to the nearest
gram.
Weight (grams¿ 6−15 16−25 26−35 36−4 0 41−55 56−80
Frequency 8p 5p 4p 6p 3p p
A histogram is drawn with a scale of 1 cm to 1 unit on the vertical axis, which represents frequency
density. The 6-15 rectangle has height 4 cm.
(a) Calculate the value of p and the height of the 56−80 rectangle. [3]
(b) Estimate the 40th percentile. [4]
2. Two events, A and B, have the following probabilities:
P(A) = 0.4, P(B | A) = 0.6, and P(B | A') = 0.2.
Calculate the following:
(a) The probability of both A and B occurring simultaneously. [2]
(b) The probability of B occurring without A. [2]
(c) The total probability of B occurring. [2]
(d) The probability that at least one of A or B occurs. [2]
3. Let X be a continuous random variable with the cumulative distribution function:
F ( x )=
{ 0 , x <0
1+k e
−x
2
x≥0
where k is a constant.
(a) Show that k =−1. [2]
(b) Find the probability density function of X. [2]
(c) Find P( X> 2) . [2]
4. A sample of 10 independent measurements, in Newton per square meter, is taken to assess the
pressure of a certain hydraulic fluid. The recorded values are:
50.4 49.6 50.0 48.0 49.0 49.2 50.0 51.2 48.6 50.2
(a) Find the unbiased point estimates for the mean and variance of the population from which the
sample is drawn. [5]
(b) State the estimate proportion of the population with pressure greater than 50.0 Newton per
square meter. [1]
5. The advertised battery life of a certain smartphone model phone's screen at 150 nits of brightness
is 15 hours. However, the actual battery life varies from one phone to another. The battery life of
the phone follows a normal distribution with a mean of 15.2 hours and a standard deviation of 0.5
hours. After a software update, a random sample of n phones shows a mean battery life of 15.4
hours.
(a) Test at the 5% significance level whether the mean battery life has increased after the update if
n=15 [6]
(b) To increase the likelihood of rejecting the null hypothesis, should the sample size n be
increased or decreased? Explain your reasoning. [2]

6. The number of people running a red light at a traffic light on a specific road is recorded each day
over a period of 90 days. It is suggested that the number of violations follows a Poisson distribution
with a mean of 3.2. The actual data, along with the expected frequencies based on this Poisson
distribution, are as follows:
Number of violations 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 or more
Observed frequency 7 15 21 13 14 9 6 p
Expected frequency 3.668 11.740 18.783 20.036 16.028 10.258 q 4.016
(a) Determine the values of pand q [3]
(b) Carry out a goodness of fit test, at the 10 % significance level, to determine whether or not
Po(3.2) is a good fit to the data. [7]
Section B [15 marks]
Answer one question only in this section.
7. A manufacturer of electric cars has determined that 2.5% of the cars sold develop a battery issue
within the first eight years. The manufacturer offers an eight-year warranty on each electric car sold.
(a) Calculate the probability that, out of 40 electric cars sold, at least two develop a battery issue
within the warranty period. [4]
(b) Find the minimum number of electric cars the company must sell so that the probability of at
least one car developing a battery issue within the eight-year warranty period is greater than 0.999.
[5]
(c) Using an appropriate approximation method, determine the probability that, out of 1200
electric cars sold, the number of cars that develop a battery issue within the eight-year warranty
period is between 20 and 35, inclusive. [6]
8. Senior citizens aged 55 to 70 in a certain village have an average weight of 62 kg with a standard
deviation of 2.5 kg. A random sample of n individuals from this age group is selected and 30
percent of them are overweight.
(a) Determine the distribution of the sample mean and state any assumption made [3]
(b) Find the smallest n given the probability that the sample mean exceeds 62.5 kg is less than
0.025. [4]
Hence,
(c) Find the probability that the different between the sample mean and the population mean is at
least 0.65 kg. [4]
(d) Find an approximate 95% confidence interval for the proportion of the senior citizens who are
overweight. [4]
