All Kinds of Friends

My daughter has all kinds of friends—school friends, playground
friends, and even, recently, a “best” friend. In this issue, you’ll find
features that reflect some types of children’s friendships. There’s
the child–pet friendship in “I’m Kind” (page 5), and there’s a new
and close friendship between two dogs in the story “When Harry
Met Snowball” (pages 20–23). No matter where your child is with
friends and friendship, we hope this issue will give your family
plenty to talk about.

6
for Mr. Nibbles
By Lissa Rovetch ⋆ Art by Deborah Melmon

Tex and Indi were helping their

sister give fresh food and water to
Mr. Nibbles.
“Guess what?” asked Tex. “Mr. Nibbles
just whispered a secret in my ear!”
“Oh, really?” said Arizona. “What did
he say?”
“Well,” said Tex. “He wishes he could
have a birthday party.”
“Aww,” said Arizona. “It’s too bad we
don’t know what day he was born.”
“I think a hamster party would be
super fun!” said Indi. “How about we
just celebrate his birthday today?”
“Yay!” Tex cheered.

7
They made tiny hamster party
decorations and a tiny hamster
cake. Then they sang to Mr. Nibbles.
“Happy birthday, dear Mr. Nibbles.
Happy birthday to you!”
But before they could finish singing,
Mr. Nibbles had managed to stuff the
whole birthday cake into his cheeks!
“Whoa!” said Indi.
“I guess he’s saving it for later,”
giggled Arizona.

8
“Do you want to know a secret?”
Tex whispered to Mr. Nibbles. “We
love you very much!”
And even though Mr. Nibbles’s
mouth was quite full, Tex was
sure he heard Mr. Nibbles whisper
back: “I love you too.”

Chocolate

Chocolate is a
popular flavor all
over the world. But
did you know the main
ingredient of chocolate
grows on a tree?

12
on Trees By Lindsay Bayer

Chocolate is made
from beans that come
from cocoa trees. The
beans grow inside pods
surrounded by fleshy pulp.
On their own, cocoa beans
don’t taste like chocolate
at all. In fact, they are
bitter and crunchy.

13
After the beans are
gathered from their
pods, they are dried,

roasted,

and crushed
into a paste.

14
The paste is mixed
with sugar, cocoa
butter, and often
milk. Then, it becomes
the sweet, creamy YUM!
chocolate that so
many people love!

When Harry
Met Snowball
By Saskia Lacey ⋆ Art by Vicky Lommatzsch

Harry and Snowball met on the first

day of school. The pups were instant pals.
“Want to come to my house for a
playdate?” asked Harry.
“Y es, yes!” Snowball yipped.

20
When Snowball arrived, the
two friends tried to play with
Harry’s toys.
But Harry’s toys were way
too big for Snowball.

Later, they played hide-and-

seek. Snowball was tiny and
could hide almost anywhere.
Harry had a hard time hiding.
“There must be something
we both can do,” said Harry,
frowning.

21
“How about we search for
something,” Snowball suggested.
“Like sticks?”
The puppies each found the
perfect stick. Then, they traded.
“It’s too small,” thought Harry,
holding the stick between his teeth.
“It’s too big,” thought Snowflake as
she tried to pick it up.

22
“I’ve got it!” Harry
grinned. “We can run around
and bark.”
“That’s my favorite thing to do!”
said Snowball.
“Mine too,” said Harry.
So that’s just what the two
puppies did.

“I didn’t mean to ruin your fort,” said
Juana. “I’m sorry it fell apart.”
“I know,” Elena said. “Maybe we can

“Sure,” Juana said.
Together, they rebuilt the fort better
than before. Then Juana did her best
