Fundamentals of Telecommunication

1. Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over distance for human communication. Early pioneers included Alexander Graham Bell and Guglielmo Marconi. Signals can be either analog or digital. 2. Analog circuits transmit continuous signals represented by voltage over copper wires. Digital circuits represent signals numerically as 1s and 0s and operate using logic gates. 3. Plain old telephone service (POTS) uses twisted pair wiring to transmit analog voice signals. Dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling encodes telephone numbers digitally. SS7 protocols setup and tear down calls digitally. 4. Private branch exchanges (PBX) provide internal calling within businesses while Centrex uses central office switches

Whatistelecommunication?
Telecommunicationissignalsthataretransmittedoverashortorlongdistanceanditspurposeisforhumanbrainstobeableto
communicatetheirthoughtsbyspeech.

TheearlyinventorsintelecommunicationwereinventorslikeAlexanderGrahamBellwhichhehadstudiedinhowthehuman
brainandearsproducesensationfromcommunicatingwithspeech,ElishaGray,AntonioMeucci,GugliemoMarconiandJohn
LogieBairdwerealsodisputedoftheinventionofphonesandtelecommunications.Thebasicelementsoftelephonyconsistof
transmitters,transmissionmediums,andreceivers.Now,anddayswehave2typesofsignalswhicharedigitalandanalog.

AnalogCircuitsandhowitworks?
Telephonestransmitinformationthrucopperwiresusingvoltage,current,frequencyortotalcharge.Acontinuoussignalis
sentwhichtimesvaryinfeatures.Thentheinformationbeingsentgetstransformedtoanelectricalsignalbytransducerwhich
convertsatypeofenergytoanothertype.Thesoundofthevoiceisrecordedwhichthenitspassedthroughasvoltagestoits
receiverend.Thevoltageisarepresentationoranalogofvoice.

DigitalCircuitsandhowitworks?
Digitalcircuitutilizesasarepresentationofsignalsanumericintegrationof1sand0sthatistheconversionofdataandvoice
thatgetcompressedandstoragesuchasvoicemail.Itssystemrepresentssignalsdiscreetlywhichoperateintwolevelsof
voltagecalledtheHighandLow.Theusageinvoltsismorethanthatofananalogcircuitboard.Digitalismadeupsmall
circuitscomponentscalledLogicGateswhichisthelogicaloperationthatproducessingleoutputsperformance.Itsfunctionis
torunundertheBooleanlogicthatisusedinmanysystemsthatusesitscompletesystemforlogicaloperationsthatisdefined
asanalgebraicsysteminlogic.ElectricitysurgethrutheLogicGatewhichcancontrolmorethanonegate.ProgrammableLogic
deviceisanotherDigitalcircuitthatisconstructedforlookuptablesthatperformsfunctionsonlogicGatesasdoesinmachines.

TheVoiceBand:
VoiceBandistherepresentationinwhichahumantypicallyfrequencyhearingrangeiswhichis20Hzto20kHz.
Telecommunicationsnormalvoicevibrationbandrangesfrom3003330Hz.Thefrequencyofthebandwidthisameasurement
ofthechannelcapacity.Thestandardizedavailablevoicebandchannelconsistsof4kHz.Therearesomerestrictionstovoice
bandwhichconsistofeconomicexpensivelargercapacityneedsmorenetworkswhichareexpensivetoobtain,inan
internationalmeetingin1874itwaschosenthattotransmitvoiceinformationclearlytothelistenerandspeakerselected4kHz
astheidealfrequenciesinwhichvoicewouldbetransmitted.

POTSareabasictelephoneservicethatisusedforresidentialandsmallbusinessandwereintroducedinthelate19thcentury.
POTselectricalwiresarecoveredinplasticandtwistedtogethertominimizetheantennaeffectwhichisthetwistedpairas
shownonthediagramabove.Thetwistedpairwiresaretwoconductorswhichpurposesaretocanceloutanyelectromagnetic
interference.Telephonewavesoperatethesameasthewavesyouseeintheocean.

SS7(SignalingSystem#7)orCCSS7(CommonChannelSignalingSystem#7)

ItsaninbandsignalinglikeDTMFwiththepurposetotearthetelephonecallsupanddown,whichisusedinSMS(short
messageservices).SS7areprotocolsthatareusedtosignaltelephony.SS7wasfirstintroducedin1975whichweredeveloped
bymajortelecommunicationcompanies.Itsearlierusewastosetupcallinformationthroughinbandsignalingsoonafterits
signalinginformationwasswitchedtoanoutofbandsystem,tofacilitatethesecurityproblemsthataroseearlierinits
developmentprocess.WhichthenleadtothedevelopmentoftheSS7oralsoknownastheCommonChannelInteroffice
SignalingSystems(CCIS)withtheintentionintranslatingintoIPviaSIGTRANprotocols.ShortlyafterprotocolsforVOIP
networkswerealmostimmediatelyadapted.
