An emergency telephone number is a number that allows a caller to contact local emergency
services for assistance. The emergency number differs from country to country; it is typically a three-
digit number so that it can be easily remembered and dialed quickly.
The State Security Service (SSS), self-styled as the Department of State Services (DSS),[1] is a
security agency of Nigeria and one of three successor organisations to the National Security Organization
(NSO). The agency is under the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and it reports its activities
to the office of the NSA.
Its main responsibilities are within the country and include counter-intelligence, internal security, counter-
terrorism, and surveillance as well as investigating some other types of serious crimes against the state. It
is also charged with the protection of senior government officials, particularly the President, Vice
President, state governors and visiting heads of states and governments with their respective families.

department within the Ministry of Defence and its under the control of the National Security Adviser.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged road users to use its toll-free 122 line to report
emergencies.
Zonal Commander of FRSC, Mr Samuel Obayemi, who is in-charge of Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo
States, noted that the toll-free line should be used to get to FRSC National Operations Control Centre
Abuja, where assistance can be received for any issue on the roads in the country.
He said that the line, also known as FRSC code number, was the surest and quickest means to get the
attention of the corps even when its patrol teams and unit command situated on the roads were not easily
visible.
“The toll-free 122 line is an express dial emergency number to get the FRSC National Operations Control
Centre, Abuja for compliant on any development or issues on the road.
“You can dial and report any accident involving vehicles or other objects on the road.
“You can report on activities of road users especially drivers, who drive recklessly at the detriment of lives
of other road users, so that the control centre can get to the nearest FRSC patrol team on the same road
to stop the reckless driver.
The zonal commander also said that the control centre also received criminal and hoodlums threats on
the road, related to the nearest unit or sector command to get the attention of the law enforcement
agencies.
“The FRSC National Operations Control Centre, Abuja has been instrumental to the smashing of activities
of criminals on our roads through road users report to the centre via 122.
“Since, we have effective collaboration with the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps
(NSCDC), and the military, they usually respond to the intelligence on crime the centre gives to the
nearest unit and sector command.
We must laud other sister security agencies, the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Air-Force, the National
Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the motoring public for their support to our special
operation.

An emergency is an urgent, unexpected, and usually dangerous situation that poses an immediate risk to
health, life, property, or environment and requires immediate action.[1] Most emergencies require urgent
intervention to prevent a worsening of the situation, although in some situations, mitigation may not be
possible and agencies may only be able to offer palliative care for the aftermath.
While some emergencies are self-evident (such as a natural disaster that threatens many lives), many
smaller incidents require that an observer (or affected party) decide whether it qualifies as an emergency.
The precise definition of an emergency, the agencies involved and the procedures used, vary by
jurisdiction, and this is usually set by the government, whose agencies (emergency services) are
responsible for emergency planning and management.

Initial flood response activities will focus on investigating the area for unsafe conditions and then
controlling the source of the flood, preventing water damage, removing the flood water, and
drying or removing damaged materials.
In 2014, the government approved '112' as Nigeria's toll-free emergency number for fielding and
dispatching distress calls. A number Nigerians could call to get a swift response from health, security, and
other services.
Do not walk through flowing water. Drowning is the number one cause of flood deaths. Currents
can be deceptive; six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet. Stay away from
riverbank edges and urban streams.
Do not drive through a flooded area. During flood events, more people drown in their cars than
anywhere else. Don’t drive around road barriers; use travel routes recommended by local
authorities.
Stay away from power lines and electrical wires. The number two cause of flood-related deaths is
electrocution since electrical currents can travel through water. Report downed power lines to the
power company or City emergency services by dialing 9-1-1.
Have your electricity turned off by the power company. Some appliances, such as television sets,
keep electrical charges even after they have been unplugged. Don’t use appliances or motors that
have gotten wet unless they have been taken apart, cleaned and dried.
Look out for animals. Small animals that have been flooded out of their homes may seek shelter in
yours. Use a pole or stick to poke and turn things over to scare away small animals.
Look before you step. After a flood, floors and stairs can be covered with debris such as mud,
broken glass, and other sharp objects.
Be alert for gas leaks. Use a flashlight to inspect for damage. Don’t smoke or use candles,
lanterns, or open flames unless you know the gas has been turned off and the area ventilated.
