Sustainable Development Goal 6 emphasizes the need for clean water and sanitation for all, aiming for sustainable management of these resources. The document proposes innovative wastewater treatment methods, including constructed wetlands that utilize native plants to filter pollutants, and biochar filtration systems to further purify water. These solutions aim to reduce reliance on traditional, energy-intensive treatment plants.

SDG

Sustainable Development
Goal 6 (SDG 6 or Global Goal
6) declares the importance
of achieving "clean water
and sanitation for all". It is
one of the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals
established by the United
Nations General Assembly to
succeed the former
Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs). According to
the United Nations, the
overall goal is to: "Ensure
availability and sustainable
management of water and
sanitation for all."
PROBLEM
Plant an innovative
/alternate method for
wastewater treatment
that can be implemented
in your community
Constructed Wetlands:
Instead of traditional
energy-intensive
treatment plants, we
could

establish a series of engineered wetlands These natural

systems mimic the ability of natural wetlands to purify
water. Different zones within the wetlands would be
planted with specific native plants chosen for their
ability to absorb pollutants like nitrogen, phosphorus,
and heavy metals. The soil and plant roots act as
natural filters.

Biochar Filtration: Following

the wetlands he partially
treated water would flow
through a fitration system
containing iochar. Biochar is a
charcoal-like materia produced
from heating organic waste
(like agricultural residues or
even treated sewage sludge) in
an oxygen-limited
environment.
