According to the above diagram, the maximum rated through current versus the associated step voltage of the different
sizes of the tap changer can be determined.
Due to insulation, the rated step voltage is also limited by the electric strenghth of the tap-changer, i.e. by limitation of
the total operating voltage across the contact circle. The totle voltage must not exceed the limited values:
10 contacts: total voltage İ 13500V
12 contacts: total voltage İ 13200V
14 contacts: total voltage İ 13000V

The breaking capacity Pstmax refers to the maximum switching capacity under safe change over load. According to the
stipulation on IEC 60214-1:2003 the breaking capacity should at least equal to 2 times the rated switching capacity Pstn,
that is, under the associated step voltage (Ui), it should be capable of interrupting 2 times the maximum rated through
current (Ium).

3/5!!!Dpoubdu!mjgf
The main expect contact life of the tap changer arcing contacts can be estimated based on the relative load(=(Iu/I um)as
shown in fig6.
The contact life of a selector switch depends on many influencing factors, particularly the condition of switching.
Therefore, only average data are given in the figure (not applicable to constant current service condition).

The short circuit strength of the tap changer is determined by the dynamic stability and by the thermal short-circuit.
Actually, the short circuit intensity of Type CV tap changer is higher than the requirements of IEC60214-1:2003.

2.7.1 Insulation to earth
The insulation to earth of the on load tap changer depends upon the system rated voltage withstand value.
The rated voltage withstand value of the insulation is applicable to new and well drying insulation material and immersed
in transformer oil (temperature about 20ņ) after impregnation. The insulation to earth is determined by the rated
voltage endurance as stipulated in the IEC Standards.
The withstand voltage corresponds to the maximum voltage

Note: Because of the practical arrangement of the change over selector, the voltage gradient between the terminal 0 of
the change over selector and the upper terminal of the selector corresponds to the insulation distance a (same phase) or
the insulation distance b (phase to phase). the insulation distance between the fine regulation selector and the change

Potential Resistance of the tap winding
During the operation of the chang-over selector the tap winding is disconnected
momentarily from the main winding, the regulation section will be broken from the main
coil. Then it will be subjected to a bias voltage. The magnitude of which depends upon the
voltage of the adjacent windings as well as the coupling capacities to them and to grounded
parts. This bias voltage is produced at the breaking point of the separating contacts during
the operation of change over selector. If these differential voltages exceed a certain limit
value, measures regarding potentied connection of the winding must be taken.
The limiting value of the bias voltage for the Type CV tap changer is 15kV . If it is
expected that the bias voltage will be higher than this value, the regulation section should
be permanently connected to a fixed potential through a resistance (potential resistance).
See Fig.8.
For calculating the change-over selector stress and for dimensioning the tie-in resistors,
the following details of the transformer specificaton must be known:
Ċ Design of the winding, that is the relative position of the regulation section to the
adjacent coil.
Ċ Capactity between tap winding and adjacent windings or winding parts. Gjh9!Dpoujopvt
ĊCapacity between tap winding and ground or, if existing, grounded adjacent winding. dpoofdujpo!pg
The potential resistance may be installed between the terminals of the oil chamber (Fig. uif!ubq!xjoejoh

(See paragraph 2.1 technical data)
The size of the oil tank of the tap changer is determined according to the oil filling quantity after inserting the core of
the selector switch into the oil chamber as shown in theparagraph 2.1 technical data.
We recommend the minimum volume of the conservater will be 10% of the oil filling quantity plus 4 dm3. Consideration
has been taken for the variation of oil quantity under the temperature of!.41ņċ211ņ/
Ensure that no pressure differential (max 0.03MPa) exists between the oil tank of the tap changer and oil of the
transformer conservator.
The quantity of oil filling of transformer oil tank must take into account the volume occupied by the tap changer.

5/3!!Jotubmmbujpo!joup!b!cfmm.uzqf!pjm!ubol
Before installing the on-load tap changer into a transformer with bell-type tank, first, remove the tap changer head.
spring energy accumualator and flange, then fix the tap changer on the mounted supporting structures.
Check:
It is advantageous to put spacer blocks temporarily between supporting structure and supporting flange, the
thickness of spacer blocks should be of 5~20mm to make the OLTC mounitng flange at the same level of the
bell-type oil tank cover, and to remove them before setting up the bell-type cover.
! The connection of the tap changer must be carried out at that position. .
This will ensure that there will be no dragging during the installation of the tap changer
After covering of the bell type oil tank, the tap changer is lifted up by means of a hoist, and installed on the mounting
flange on the cover of the bell type oil tank.
5/4!!Jotubmmbujpo
The installation of the tap changer should be done according to instruction HM0.460.001. Observe the following
during installion:
The connected leads must not exert any force on the tap changer. If necessary, the last section of the lead wire can be
curved to give a cushion.
After drying of the tap changer, it is not permitted to operate before oil filling. If operation is necessary, the oil chamber
must be filled with oil.
If the conservator is removed for shipping, attention should be given to reduce the chamber oil level for the
accommodation of oil expansion.
If the transformer is transported without oil, then the oil in the tap changer must be fully drained, and connected the
internal of the oil chamber to the transformer main oil tank. This time the oil chamber is subject to the same pressure on
the transformer.
During installation of motor-drive unit, following instruction book should be consulted for the installation of driving
shaft and the protective relay:

To ensure the electrical performance of the tap changer, it must be fully dried and filled with oil according to our
On-Load Tap Changer type CV Operation Instructions HM0.460.001.
4.4.1 Vacuum drying
Heating up: the temperature of the tap changer is raised at a rate of 20ņ per hour in ambient atmosphere until up to
110ņ.
Preparatory: in circulating air at 110ņ!nby!bqqmjfe!up!uif!ubq!dibohfs!gps!b!evsbujpo!pg!21!ipvst.
Vacuum drying: with a temperature of 110ņ!nby, applied to the tap changer and the same drying time as for the
transfornner, at least 10 hours.
4.4.2 Vapor phase drying:
Heating up: enter a kerosene vapor of 90ņ, and keep this temperature constant for 3 to 4 hours.
Drying: the temperature of the vapor is increased at a rate of 10ņ per hour up to the specified and temperature, but
must not exceed 125ņ. The time required for drying is usually the same as the transformer.
4.4.3 Oil filling
After drying, oil filling should be performed immediately under vacuum.
The main oil tank of the transformer and the oil chamber of the tap changer must be commented together with a bypass
pipe so that they can be drawn vacuum at the same time and oil filled up to tank top.

6/!Bddfttpsjft
6/2!!Qspufdujwf!sfmbz!(Please refer to attachment for the types)
The protective relay is installed directly on the connection flange of head cover, and connected to the conservator by pipe.
This pipe should have a slope of at least 2ǁ. When the oil flow in the relay exceeds a critical value, the flap of the relay will
operate, thus operates the NO and NC contacts. There contacts should be connected to the tripping circuit of the
transformer circuit breaker. The transformer will be cut off at once if the relay operates.
For the set composed of 3 single phase on load tap changer, one protective relay should be installed for each single
phase tap changer.

The motor drive unit is used to drive the on load tap changer for selecting the service position. Within the cabinet of
the motor drive unit, there are all electrical and mechanical features required for driving the on load tap changer.
The control is based on step-by-step principle, that is, the on load tap changer will be changed over from one operating
position to the adjacent one, then it will stop. The operation of the motor drive unit is actuated by a single control
signal and working unintermittently until the work has been done, then it stops. For the Type CV on-load tap changer,
CMA9 and CMA7 or SHM-1 motor drive unit can be selected, please refer to the Appendix for their overall

5.5 ZXJY-1 OLTC online oil filter plant

ZXJY oil filter plant is mainly used for cycling and filtering insulation oil of the on-load tap changer, which is
used in combination with tap changer to effectively remove free carbon and fine metal grains in oil of the on-load tap
changer during normal operation of transformer system, and also to reduce moisture content in it, in order to keep
breakdown voltage and service life of the oil, to improve effectively operation safety and reliability of on-load tap
changer, and to decrease maintenances under status of no power supply.

Suggest to use ZXJY-1 oil filter plant for on-load tap changer in below operation status:
1. On-load tap changer is used for rectification transformer and furnace transformer with frequent daily operations,
full capacity operation and frequent overload.

2. Operation surround is with high humidity such as in tropical and subtropical region, in which the oil of on-load
tap changer will be getting much moisture.
