To induct 13th cohort of the prospective Field Epidemiologists; The Ministry of National
Health Services, Regulations and Coordination invites applications from public sector
medical doctors, Veterinaries and Dentist (both males and females (females are encouraged
to apply) for admission in a 2 years specialized “Field Epidemiology & Laboratory Training
Programme” conducted at the National Institute of Health, Islamabad.
• Nominated candidates will have to undergo written and interview evaluation.
• Based on their performance the fellows will be selected for two-year training which
includes contact sessions in Islamabad leading to a robust field work.
• Followed by on-the-job mentoring in the respective Disease Surveillance and Response
Units (DSRUs) at Provincial Director General Health Offices

Terms and Conditions applicable to the participants selected for screening
course leading to 2 Years Field Epidemiology & Laboratory Training
Programme (Session 2019-2021)
The specialized Field Epidemiology & Laboratory Training Programme (FELTP), course spans
across 24 months. Subsequent to their first contact session of 02 months in Islamabad, the trainees
will report to respective provincial health departments, and shall remain posted at provincial disease
surveillance & response units (PDS&RUs) for the remaining period of 2-years. They will however be
required to attend the contact sessions of 2-3 weeks duration in Islamabad; as required.
The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, NIH and FELTP-Pakistan
accordingly desire the Secretaries of relevant health departments (from where candidate/s are
applying for the programme) to make a commitment to create an enabling environment for the
selected fellows during the entire training period.
The FELTP shall be responsible for the following:
1. FELTP will work closely and in partnership with the federal and provincial/ area health
departments to assure selection of talented candidates (hereinafter referred to as FELTP
fellows). FELTP will like to participate if the candidates are finalized through interviews at
provincial level. Final selection of the candidates will be made at the Federal level based on
their performance in a short course, preceding immediately to FELTP for 02 year’s course.
2. FELTP through NIH may support establishment/ strengthening of Provincial / Regional
Disease Surveillance & response Units (DSRUs) which will also act as FELTP provincial
training sites.
3. FELTP will encourage fellows to identify areas and carryout epidemiological studies on
issues related to local health problems as well as the national priority diseases and the
associated interventions. This will render the field training more realistic to the fellows and
simultaneously prove useful to Pakistan in general and specifically to provinces from where
they are coming.
4. FELTP will provide technical expertise to the FELTP fellows and also to other partners, as
and when required.
5. FELTP will be responsible for sponsoring fellows, depending on the availability of resources,
to relevant conferences and meetings where fellows can present papers as approved by
FELTP on work done by them as part of their course.
6. FELTP shall provide a laptop and other training materials for selected candidates for the two
years course.
7. FELTP shall provide food and shared accommodation for fellows during the contact training
sessions in Islamabad.
Support from the Federal and Provincial Health/ Area Departments:
The parent department through the field supervisors shall commit to create an enabling environment
for the FELTP fellows in the following manner:
1. Departments of Health will identify and sponsor candidates for FELTP short course (four
weeks duration). These nominees should be fully supported by parent departments if
selected for two year programme.
2. Based on the evaluation in the short course by the instructors and FELTP Pakistan, Centres
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta will select the appropriate candidates for
the two years course.
3. Salary and travel support for teaching sessions shall continue from the parent departments of
the fellows.
4. Following initial 02 months teaching session, the fellows will be posted in respective PDSRUs
based at provincial DG Health office and assigned duties within provincial surveillance/
epidemic investigation units which will also act as FELTP provincial training sites.
5. FELTP fellows will not be reassigned any other administrative responsibilities unrelated to
Epidemiology/ Public Health activities during the course duration.
6. If FELTP determines that a fellow is needed and will benefit from a short-term experience
(serious outbreak/ other national emergency/ National programme evaluation) outside his/
her province, then after permission from the respective provincial health department he/ she
could be re-assigned by FELTP for a short-term period as required.
7. The health departments should encourage the fellows to present their findings (both written
and oral) at appropriate fora that facilitate appropriate public health actions based on those
findings.
Scope of Work
1. The fellows will be assigned to the public health work specifically in Field Epidemiology.
Emphasis is placed on the application of epidemiology, disease surveillance, outbreak
investigation, operational research, programme evaluation, communication skills and other
public health competencies for developing and initiating appropriate actions to resolve
existing or identified priority local public health problems.
2. Each fellow is required to complete several field projects as requirements of the FELTP
course during each field posting.
3. Fellows should attend regular office meetings related to policy-setting and decision- making.
4. Fellows should be provided access to disease data and suitable office space to work.
5. Fellows may also need access to transportation in case of an outbreak and/or case
investigation.
6. The nominees should be ready to move for detailing to a field placement site as required.
7. Fellows shall be expected to attend all in-person teaching sessions of FELTP and other
activities planned by FELTP for them e.g. attendance at National & International conferences,
symposia, seminars, workshops and joining international teams on special missions like
evaluation teams.
