design bending

The document outlines the design principles for reinforced concrete (RC) beams, focusing on singly-reinforced and doubly-reinforced beams under bending. It details the steps for calculating the required steel reinforcement ratios, tension and compression steel areas, and the number of bars needed based on various loading conditions. Additionally, it provides practical examples to illustrate the application of these design principles in real scenarios.

DESIGN OF S/DRB

PRACTICE 1

A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300 mm and an effective depth of 618 mm. Compressive
reinforcement (IF REQUIRED) will be placed at d’ = 60 mm. Use f’c = 28 Mpa and fy = 415 Mpa. At
ultimate condition U = 1.2DL + 1.6LL:

1. Calculate the steel ratio for a balanced section.

2. Calculate the maximum steel ratio for a tension-controlled section.
3. Determine the required number of 28 mm diameter bars as tension reinforcement if it is to support a
bending moment of 240 kN-m from dead load and 195 kN-m from live load.

PRACTICE 2

A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300 mm and an overall depth of 510 mm. The beam is simply
supported over a span of 5.3 m. Use f’c = 28 Mpa and fy = 415 Mpa. Concrete cover is 70 mm from the
centroid of the steel area. The beam carries a superimposed dead load of 19 kN/m and a live load of 15
kN/m. Unit weight of concrete is 23.5 kN/m3. Assume ultimate condition U = 1.2DL + 1.6LL.

1. Determine the maximum factored moment on the beam.

2. Determine the required number of 20 mm diameter tension bars.
3. If the beam will carry an additional factored load of 20 kN at midspan, determine the required number
of 20 mm tension bars.

PRACTICE 3

A rectangular concrete beam having a width of 250 mm and an effective depth of 350 mm will be
designed to carry the factored design loads as stated. If the compression steel is found necessary, it will
be placed 60 mm from the extreme compression fiber of the beam. Use f’c = 20.7 MPa and fy = 275
MPa. Neglect the effect of the displaced concrete.

1. Determine the number of pieces of 20 mm diameter tension steel if the beam carries a factored
design moment of 80 kN-m.
2. Determine the number of pieces of 20 mm diameter steel if the beam carries a factored design
moment of 135 kN-m.

1. Determine the tension steel area if the factored moment is 210 kN-m.
2. Determine the number of 25 mm bars if it will carry a uniform DL of 30 kN/m and uniform LL of 12
kN/m.
