A Complicated Inheritance Case

Mr. Yanto, a successful entrepreneur in his city, passed away at the age of 65. His sudden departure
shocked his family, especially his children—Tina, Rudi, and Andi. Mr. Yanto has many assets, including
companies, properties, and other investments. However, he left this world without having the
chance to make a will, so all of his inheritance must be divided according to the applicable laws. The
problem arose when Rudi, the second child who had been working with his father
in the family business, felt that he deserved the largest share of the inheritance. "I have dedicated
my life to this company," he said during the family meeting. "Without me, the company wouldn't be
this big."

Tina, the eldest child who works as a doctor in another city, disagrees with Rudi's view. "Inheritance
is our right, Rudi. We should share it fairly," she said. Andi, the youngest child who is still in college,
feels trapped between his two older siblings. He doesn't understand much about business or law, but
he knows that this family rift could destroy their relationships. The family ultimately decided to take
this matter to court. They filed a lawsuit requesting the judge to determine the division of the
inheritance according to the law. The court appointed an experienced judge in inheritance cases to
handle this matter.

In the trial process, the judge explained that according to inheritance law in Indonesia, legitimate
children have equal rights to their parents' inheritance. Although Rudi has worked hard at the
company, that does not automatically grant him a larger share of the inheritance, unless there is a
will stating otherwise, which in this case does not exist. However, Rudi did not give up. He presented
evidence that he had invested his personal money into the company, significantly increasing its
value. The lawyer believes that this contribution should be considered as part of the inheritance
distribution. Tina doesn't sit idly by. They submitted documents showing that their father has
provided equal financial support to all three of them throughout their lives, without any difference in
treatment.

The trial is lengthy, with arguments from both sides becoming increasingly intense. Tina and Rudi
each feel that they are the ones most entitled. Meanwhile, Andi feels increasingly pressured by the
situation he is facing, confused about which side to take. In the midst of this tension, the family
lawyer, Mrs. Siti, suggested that they try mediation. "The court can decide according to the law, but
your relationship as a family could be destroyed," she said. "It might be better if you sit down
together and find a solution that is acceptable to all parties."

Finally, the family agreed to try mediation. They sat together with a neutral mediator, trying to
resolve the issue without having to continue the conflict in court. In the mediation process, they
found that the core of the issue was not about money or possessions, but rather about mutual
respect and recognition of each other's contributions. Rudi finally realized that his contribution to
the company's development was indeed important, but family relationships were far more valuable.
Tina also began to understand that although they were entitled to the same inheritance, Rudi had
sacrificed more time and energy for the family business.

After several mediation sessions, they finally reached an agreement. Rudi will receive a larger share
of the company due to his active role, while Tina and Andi will receive equal compensation in the
form of property and other investments. This agreement is not only approved by all parties, but it
also preserves their family relationships. In the end, the judge ratified this agreement as a court
ruling. Although this case began with tension and conflict, Mr. Yanto's family managed to resolve it in
a way that kept their brotherhood intact. They learned that in matters of inheritance, justice is not
just about dividing wealth, but also about respecting each other's contributions and feelings. This
family continues their lives, with sweet memories of Mr. Yanto and the awareness that no matter
what happens, family must always come first.
