Dane has a piece of scrap wood and wanted to put a ribbon in all
its edges as her art project in school. How long will the ribbon
she will need in centimeters?
This problem is an example of perimeter problem.
If 1 edge/side measures 1 cm, then we will count the numbers of
edges/sides and multiply it to 1cm.
24 1
23 2 The distance around this scrap wood is
22 4
3 24 cm.

15 13 That means, Dane needs 24 cm of
14 ribbon to decorate her art project.
Mang Martin is a farmer who has a
rectangular vacant lot that is 15 meters
long and 8 meters wide. How much
fencing material would he need to
completely surround the area?
8 meters
15 meters

The length and the width are the dimensions of the rectangle.
8 meters Perimeter = 8 + 8 + 15 + 15
= 16 + 30
= 46 meters
15 meters
Therefore, Mang Martin needs 46 meters of fencing material to enclose his
vacant rectangular lot.

Look at the figures below. Notice that all their sides are congruent.
Thus, these figures are considered as equilateral polygon.
16 m 8m
3m

4 congruent sides 3 congruent sides 5 congruent sides 10 congruent sides
Square Triangle Pentagon Decagon
The perimeter of an equilateral polygon (a polygon with all equal
sides) can be found by using the formula below.
Perimeter = number of sides x length of one side
=nxs

Please take note that
Perimeter is the distance around a polygon.
To find the perimeter of a polygon, add the measures of the
sides. Perimeter is expressed in the same units of measure as
in length and width. To find the perimeter of all regular
polygons, just find the product of the number of sides and the
measure of one side.

Some polygons, like rectangle, have two congruent opposite
sides. The perimeter of a rectangle can be found by adding 2
times the length and 2 times the width, or its perimeter equals
twice the sum of the length and width.
Anna has rectangular handkerchief. It has dimensions of 35 cm by 40 cm. Find the
perimeter of Anna’s handkerchief.
Perimeter = 35 + 35 + 40 + 40
= (2 x 35) + (2 x 40)
= 70 + 80
= 150 cm

More Examples:
1) Find the perimeter of the equilateral triangle whose sides measure 12 meters each?
Perimeter = 12 + 12 + 12
= 3 x 12
= 36 meters
2) Miguel glues a ribbon border around the edges of a 5-inch by 8-inch picture to
create a frame. What is the total length of ribbon Miguel uses?
Perimeter = 5 + 5 + 8 + 8
= (2 x 5) + (2 x 8)
= 10 + 16
= 26 inches

More Examples:
3) Francis made a rectangular path from her driveway to the porch. The width of
the path is 2 feet. The length is 28 feet longer than the width. What is the
perimeter of the path?
Perimeter = 2 + 2 + 30 + 30
= (2 x 2) + (2 x 30)
= 4 + 60
2ft + 28ft = 30ft
= 64 feet
2 ft

4) A building at Elmira College has a room shaped like an octagon. The length of
each side of the room is 35 feet. What is the perimeter of this room?
Perimeter = 35 + 35 + 35 + 35 + 35 + 35 + 35 + 35
= (8 x 35)
= 280 feet
35 ft

5) What is the perimeter of this figure? 10 in

In answering this problem, we need to find
the missing measurements of the other 15 in
edges first.

5) What is the perimeter of this figure? 10 in 7 in
Now that we already have the complete 4 in
measurements we can proceed with finding
the perimeter of the polygon. 15 in
Perimeter = 10 + 8 + 6 + 7 + 4 + 15
= 50 inches
