Definition & Purpose
Listening skills are one of the four basic skills in learning English, besides
speaking, reading, and writing. Listening is the ability to receive, understand, and
interpret messages conveyed orally by English speakers. In the context of
learning, listening is not just hearing sounds, but also includes the process of
understanding the meaning contained in conversations, speeches, instructions,
and audio recordings in English. That is, listening is a receptive skill that requires
attention, concentration, and cognitive ability to capture messages accurately.

The main purpose of learning listening skills in English is to equip students to be

able to understand the information conveyed in oral form. Listening learning aims
so that students can identify the main idea, detect important details, recognize the
speaker's attitude, and conclude the content of the message conveyed.
Types
In the context of learning in the classroom, teachers can apply various types of listening
activities to improve students' abilities, both in understanding the content of messages and
in interacting communicatively.

Listening activities to find certain information from audio material. For example, students
are asked to listen to a conversation and write down information. Train students to focus
and identify important details of a communication context.

Listening for general understanding. In this activity, students listen to a recording or

story and are asked to summarize the main content or main idea of the material.

Interactive listening activity is also very useful in the learning process. In this activity,
listening is combined with speaking, where students listen to the other person and
respond directly. Examples are small group discussions, interview simulations, or role
play.
Factors
The main factor is the mastery of vocabulary (vocabulary). When students have limited
vocabulary knowledge, they will have difficulty understanding the meaning of the audio
material they listen to.

The second factor is the accent and speaking speed of native speakers or audio
recordings. Students often have difficulty understanding speech in English that is spoken
at high speed or with a certain accent (for example British, American, or Australian
accent).

Psychological factors also play a role. Low self-confidence, anxiety about English
material, or fear of making mistakes can interfere with students' performance when
listening. Anxious students tend to lose focus and fail to capture information thoroughly.
Therefore, it is important to build a fun and stress-free learning atmosphere.
Strategy or Method
Teachers need to apply various effective strategies and methods so that students' listening skills can
develop optimally.
One of the proven effective strategies is the use of audio visual media such as short films, songs,
podcasts, or learning videos. This media provides an authentic listening experience because students
can hear pronunciation, intonation, and expressions of native speakers, and obtain visual context that
supports understanding the content.

The task-based listening method or task-based listening learning is also very helpful in improving this
skill. In this method, students not only listen passively, but also do certain activities after listening,
such as making a summary, writing down important information, or discussing with friends.

Another method that can be applied is dictogloss, which is a technique in which students listen to a
short text that is recited two to three times, then are asked to rewrite the content of the text in their
own words.
Conclusion
From the results of listening activities, it can be concluded that the use of social
media by students has two sides. The source said that social media can help in
learning and self-development, but also holds risks such as concentration
disorder and addiction. Therefore, students are advised to manage time and be
wise in using social media so that the benefits can be greater than the impact.
