Preface
Modern medicine would not be where it is today, were it
not for the innovations in medical technology and the
abundance of medical equipment available to healthcare
professionals. Depending on the specialty, the average
healthcare professional will use multiple types of medical
equipment to aid in the diagnosis or treatment of disease,
or the monitoring of patients’ health. Adequate knowledge
of the equipment, and its safe use, is therefore essential to
delivering effective and safe patient care. It is somewhat
surprising, therefore, that often healthcare professionals are
unfamiliar with the use (or even unaware of the existence)
of the medical or surgical equipment they may need to use,
right up until the point they are required to perform the
procedure.
To address this issue, this book aims to serve as an
illustrative guide for commonly used medical and surgical
equipment found on the wards, clinics and in A&E. We
hope this book will serve as a reference tool for medical
students and junior doctors alike, who may not have come
across the equipment before or are not familiar with their
exact indications and correct use. Using this book will
allow students and doctors to familiarise themselves with
the equipment before having to use them in a clinical
setting, thereby hopefully increasing readers’ knowledge and
confidence in subsequent clinical situations.
Given the almost inexhaustible list of medical equipment
in existence, certain items have had to be prioritised and
thus only a list of the most used every-day equipment are
x Preface
presented in this book. The book does not contain specific
surgical instruments used in the operating theatre, nor does
it aim to describe the use of large and often complex medical
devices such as ventilators or X-ray machines.
We hope this book will serve you well in preparation for
your exams or clinical rotations, and ultimately enrich the
experience of your journey through clinical practice.

How to use this book
This book is intended both for those who wish to
systematically learn about all of the equipment across
different specialties and those who simply want to use it as a
handy reference guide when on the wards.
The equipment is organised into chapters based on specialty
and body system.
Each medical equipment section is set in the following way:
1. A brief description detailing the equipment’s general
purpose and its components
2. A list of indications outlining the equipment’s most
common uses
3. A brief description of the equipment’s directions of use
4. A summary of cautions and contraindications to be
aware and ensure safe use
5. Finally, an accompanying photograph of the equipment
to facilitate learning
