ABOUT THIS BOOK
REA’s TEAS Crash Course is the first book of its kind for the time-
crunched studier or any nursing school applicant who wants a quick
refresher before taking the Test of Essential Academic Skills, or TEAS. This
Crash Course is based upon a careful analysis of the exam’s content and
actual test questions.
The TEAS Crash Course provides a review specifically targeted to what
you really need to know to ace the exam. In Chapter 1, the author describes
the format and the content of the TEAS, shares proven test- taking
strategies, and lets you determine how well-suited you are to the nursing
profession.
Chapter 2 covers Reading Comprehension, a topic that comprises more than
25% of the 150 total questions on the TEAS test. Chapter 3 reviews
Language topics, such as Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation, and Vocabulary;
while chapters 4 and 5 give you a review of Basic Math and Algebra. The
final two chapters are devoted to the largest part of the TEAS: nearly 1/3 of
all the questions you will answer on the final exam focus on the topics of
Life Science (Chapter 6) and Physical Science (Chapter 7).
Note that all of the chapters give you a targeted content review in an outline
format, along with sample problems that test what you’ve just reviewed.
This format will help you build your confidence and your understanding of
the topics as you study.
No matter how or when you prepare for the TEAS, REA’s Crash Course
will empower you to study efficiently and strategically, so you can get a
high score.
Good luck on the TEAS!

A NOTE FROM OUR AUTHOR
The basic approach of this TEAS Crash Course is simple: the targeted
content review covers exactly what you need to know for the TEAS. You
won’t waste valuable study time slogging through long paragraphs,
complicated explanations, and endless lists of items to memorize. The
sample problems in the book will demonstrate how you should answer the
types of questions you can expect to see on the TEAS.
Before you start studying, ask yourself: how prepared are you to take the
TEAS? Some students will be ready to take the test the minute they pick up
this book, while another segment of test-takers may be completely
underprepared. Most test-takers will fall somewhere between these two
extremes. Maybe you’re more confident (and competent) in some areas than
you are in others. So what should you do? There are four ways to study with
this Crash Course. Pick the one that works best for you.
1. The Systematic Approach – Start at the beginning and go through the
entire book, chapter by chapter, problem by problem, not skipping
anything, and making sure you cover every topic thoroughly.
2. The Strength Approach – Review the sections that you feel are your
strong points, then work into areas that give you trouble. Starting with
your strengths will give you the confidence and positive attitude you
need to press on, tackle the areas you need the most help in, and
ultimately do well on this test.
3. The Weakness Approach – Study the sections that you feel are your
weakest and move on from there. For example, are your Math skills
rusty? Then start with chapters 4 and 5 and study them carefully. Once
you have shored up your weak areas, move on to your stronger areas,
building your knowledge and confidence page by page.
4. The Blank Slate Approach – Unsure of your strengths or your
weaknesses? Then start anywhere you like in the book and branch out
from there. As you review each section, you’ll soon get an idea of how
much you know (or don’t know) about a given topic. By committing to
studying, you’re gaining knowledge and belief in yourself.
In working through the book – regardless of your chosen study approach –
you’ll eventually get to the point where you feel ready to take a practice
test. At that point, go to the online REA Study Center:
www.rea.com/studycenter, take the free practice test, and see how well you
score. (You can also take the online practice test before you begin studying
to gauge your overall understanding of the topics tested on the TEAS.)
Diagnostic feedback pinpoints your strengths and weaknesses and shows
you where you need further review.
Study hard, and good luck on your test!
