This entry is from the Siemens Industry Online Support. The general terms of use
(http://www.siemens.com/terms_of_use) apply.

Security Siemens provides products and solutions with industrial security functions that
informa- support the secure operation of plants, systems, machines and networks.
tion In order to protect plants, systems, machines and networks against cyber
threats, it is necessary to implement – and continuously maintain – a holistic,
state-of-the-art industrial security concept. Siemens’ products and solutions only
form one element of such a concept.
Customer is responsible to prevent unauthorized access to its plants, systems,
machines and networks. Systems, machines and components should only be
connected to the enterprise network or the internet if and to the extent necessary
and with appropriate security measures (e.g. use of firewalls and network
segmentation) in place.
Additionally, Siemens’ guidance on appropriate security measures should be
taken into account. For more information about industrial security, please visit
http://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.
Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous development to make them
more secure. Siemens strongly recommends to apply product updates as soon
as available and to always use the latest product versions. Use of product
versions that are no longer supported, and failure to apply latest updates may
increase customer’s exposure to cyber threats.

1 Task

1 Task

How can a two-hand operating panel, including sensor switches 3SU1

(MLFB: 3SU1200-1SK10-2SA0), be evaluated safely according to
IEC62061 (SIL3), respectively ISO13849-1 (PL e).

2 Solution

2 Solution

In general, both sensor switches of two-hand control panel will be

connected to a fail-safe evaluation unit. For the evaluation units you can
use the hardware parametrizable safety relay 3SK1 as well as the
software parametrizable safety relay 3SK2 respectively MSS 3RK3. The
safety evaluation units monitor the actuation of both control devices within
a period of time of 500ms. The safety evaluation units test the sensor
wiring against short and cross circuits.
This document describes the wiring connection of the sensor switches
with the safety relays as well as the parameterization (by DIP-switches
respectively parameterization software) of the devices for the sensor
monitoring. Additionally, the safety related assessment of the sensor
circuit using the Safety Evaluation Tool (SET) will be given by this
documentation. Furthermore the safety function “emergency stop” will be
shown for the sake of completeness, but not as part of the safety related
assessment. More Information about shutdown in case of emergency is
given by SIRIUS Safety Application Manual.

3 Overview

3 Overview

3.1 Application
Two-hand control panels consist out of two buttons (sensor switch 3SU1),
which have to be actuated simultaneously for controlling a machine. The
two-handed control prevents the operator to get in contact with the
hazardous area.

3.2 Setup
 Siemens AG 2018 All rights reserved

3.3 Function description

Due to the condition of a simultaneous actuation of both operating
devices, the operator is forced to use the two-hand control panel to
ensure to get not in contact with any hazardous area. The safety relay
switches the release circuit if both sensors’ high-signals are available
within a time period of 500ms and a closed feedback circuit. If one of two
sensor switches are released, the machine will be safely be switched off
by the safety relay. After that, a reactivation of the safety relay is
necessary by actuation of both sensor switches. If the emergency-stop
device was activated, the safety relay has to be switched on by a
specified start pushbutton.

9 Safety-related evaluation of sensor-circuit

Presumption for the safety-related assessment:
 Reliability: MTTFd = 1071 years (manufacturer specification)
 Structure: category 4 according to ISO 13849-1 (requirements are
fulfilled)
 Diagnosis: DC= 99%
o failure (e.g. continuous actuation) of one sensor switch will
be detected
o short and cross circuits will be detected (see
parameterization of evaluation devices)
o reaction to all faults (restart will be prevented)
 maximum operating: 20 years (manufacturer specification)
 common cause failure: specific measures have to be taken according
to ISO 13849-1. In this example, some actions are expected to reach
a score of at least 65.
