Guidelines For Your Project

This document provides guidelines for conducting a research project. It outlines the main parts of a research proposal, including the problem statement, research objectives, research methodology, data analysis, and conclusions. The problem statement should provide context and importance of the research topic. Research objectives should define the research questions. The methodology section should describe how data will be collected, usually through a survey, and analyzed. The analysis will apply statistical methods to describe and explore the data in relation to the research objectives. Lastly, conclusions will summarize key findings and implications. Effective questionnaire design is also discussed, with tips on question format, wording, and structure.

GUIDELINES FOR YOUR PROJECT

STEPS TO YOUR RESEARCH

Main parts of your research

The problem statement The research objectives The research methodology Your analysis on your research object Your conclusion or implications

The problem statement

The problem statement: tell the reader context of your research, why you choose your research object, what is the importance of your research, what you aim to explore after finishing your research.

DEFINE YOUR RESEARCH OBJECT

What is your research object? E.g.: My research object is the determinants (factors) affecting to study result of students in FTU. The problem statement: this object is very important since its exploration could help the students to improve their results as well as the university in understanding their students and upgrading their education.

The research objectives

Tell your research objectives, in particular, raising the research questions you plan to find the answers. E.g: My research objective is to explore the determinants to the study result of FTU student. In particular, the research aims to answer the following questions

The research questions

Do the students part time job affect on their study? Are the students activities negatively affected on their study result? Is there any difference in study result between male and female students? Is there any difference in study result between students from HCMC and from the other hometown?

The research methodology

Tell the reader how you conduct your research. In particular: What is your data collection? (E.g.: survey) How do you collect the data? (E.g.: the questionnaire) What method do you use to analyze the research? (E.g: Descriptive Statistics or Regression, t-test, ANNOVA)

Your analyze

Apply all the methods you study in this course to organize, describe and analyze the data. Your analysis needs to support your research objectives What do you withdraw from the figures you analyze

Your conclusion or implication

What do we learn from this research? E.g: Part time job has negative effect on study result of the freshman. Summary your research exploration Tell some your implications: E.g: the freshman should not do the part time job

Your questionnaire
Two main requirements to your questionnaire Must cover all the information you want to collect Need to attract the people to have exact responses

Steps to construct your questionnaire

Define the particular information to collect: what are variables in your research? Choose the appropriate scale measurements to your variables Choose the appropriate type of questions and answers Evaluate the question contents Define the use of terminology and the structure and format of the questionnaire

Evaluate the question contents

Do the respondents understand your question? Are the questions informative? Do the respondents give their information? Are their information necessary for your research?

Types of questions and answers

Two main types of question: The closed-end questions The open-ended questions

The closed-end questions

Have two choices: Yes or No E.g: Do you have any part time job? Require the respondents to rank their answer: E.g: Please rank your favorite source to study: Your text book, The lecture notes, The Internet, The reference books, Your notes in the notebooks

The closed-end questions

Multiple choice questions: E.g.: What the following activities do you join into at your university? English club, Research club, Student club

The open-ended questions

No available answers E.g: Why do you do the part time job?

Some attention on your terminology in the questionnaire

Use the simple and familiar words Avoid too long question, the better is the clear and particular question Avoid the double-barreled question: e.g. Is Kidos ice cream delicious and nutritious? Avoid the leading question: e.g. Do you agree that Vinamilk is highest quality trademark? Avoid the loaded question (unbalance scale) Avoid questions difficult to answer: E.g. How many books do you read last year? How old are you?

Define the order of questions

As usual, the questionnaire contains three parts: Screening: choose the respondents for the research Main part: the questions to research objectives Biodata: Personal data of the respondent
