Restructuring school curriculum and
pedagogy in a new 5+3+3+4 design
■ Responsible to the developmental needs and interests of learners.
■ Result in cognitive development of Children.
■ The curricular and pedagogical structure- guided by a 5+3+3+4 design, consisting of the
Foundational Stage, Preparatory Stage, Middle Stage and Secondary Stage.
1. The Foundational Stage – five years
( flexible, multilevel, play/activity-based learning and the curriculum and pedagogy of
ECCE) .
2. The Preparatory Stage – three years
( play, discovery, and activity-based pedagogical and curricular style), also include some
light textbooks.
3. The Middle Stage – three years
( the introduction of subject teachers for learning and discussion of abstract concepts in
each subject; sciences, mathematics, arts, social sciences, and humanities).
4. The Secondary Stage – four years of multidisciplinary study
(greater depth, greater critical thinking, greater attention to life aspirations, and greater
flexibility and student choice of subjects).
Holistic development of learners
■ To move the education system towards real understanding
and away from the culture of rote learning.
■ Specific sets of skills and values across domains will be
identified for integration and incorporation.
■ Curriculum framework will be ensuring that these skills and
values are imbibed through engaging processes of teaching
and learning.
Reduce curriculum content to enhance
essential learning and critical thinking

■ To make space for critical thinking and more holistic, inquiry-


based, discovery-based, discussion-based, and analysis-based
learning.
■ Teaching and learning will be conducted in a more interactive
manner.
1. Questions will be encouraged.
2. classroom sessions will regularly contain more fun, creative,
collaborative.
3. exploratory activities for students for deeper and more
experiential learning.
Experiential learning
■ Experiential learning will be adopted ( such as hands-on learning, arts-
integrated and sports-integrated education, story-telling-based pedagogy).
1. Art-integration utilizes various aspects and forms of art and culture as
the basis for learning of concepts across subjects.
– For imbibing the Indian ethos through integration of Indian art and
culture in the teaching and learning process at every stages.
– Strengthen the linkages between education and culture.
■ Sports-integration utilizes physical activities including indigenous sports.
– In pedagogical practices to develop skills such as collaboration, self-
initiative, self-direction, self-discipline, teamwork, responsibility,
citizenship, etc.
– Undertaken to help students adopt fitness as a lifelong attitude.
– It serves to foster holistic development by promoting physical and
psychological well-being.
– Enhance cognitive abilities.
Empower students through flexibility
in course choices
■ Students will be given increased flexibility and choice of subjects
(particularly in secondary school).
■ They can design their own paths of study and life plans.
■ No hard separation among ‘curricular’, ‘extracurricular ’, or ‘co-
curricular’, among ‘arts’, ‘humanities’, and ‘sciences’, or between
‘vocational’ or ‘academic’ streams.
■ Subjects such as physical education, the arts and crafts, and vocational
skills will be incorporated throughout the school curriculum.
■ Students interest matters.
Multilingualism and the power of
language
■ The medium of instruction will be the mother tongue (until
grade 5).
■ Followed by both public and private schools.
■ To bridge the gaps that exist between the language spoken
by the child and the medium of teaching.
■ Teachers will be encouraged to use a bilingual approach.
■ Extensive use of technology will be made for teaching and
learning of different languages.
■ Preparing high-quality bilingual textbooks and teaching-
learning materials for science and mathematics.
■ Participation in fun project/activity on ‘The Languages of India’
( Grades 6-8) under the ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’ initiative.
■ Sense of the unity and the beautiful cultural heritage and
diversity of India.
■ Learning of at least two classical language of India.
■ Foreign languages will also be offered at the secondary level.
■ The teaching of all languages through innovative and
experiential methods (including through gamification and
apps).
■ Indian Sign Language (ISL) will be standardized across the
country.
Curricular integration of essential
subject, skills and capacities
■ Introducing contemporary subjects such as artificial Intelligence,
design Thinking, organic living, environmental education.
■ Mathematical & critical thinking should be introduced at foundational
stage.
■ Use of puzzles and games make mathematical thinking more
enjoyable and engaging.
■ Coding will be introduced in middle stage.
■ Bag-less days will be encouraged in which vocational crafts such as
carpentry, electric work, gardening will be promoted.
National Textbooks with Local Content
and Flavour

■ The aim is to provide high quality textbooks at nominal price.


■ Emphasis on constructive rather than rote learning.
■ Suitable changes in curriculum & pedagogy will be made by NCERT,
SCERTs and schools to reduce the weight of school bags.
■ All national textbooks will be available in all regional language.
■ The overall aim is to create a balanced national education system that
respect & integrates local diversity, knowledge & experiences.
Transforming Assessment for
Student Development
■ NEP emphasizes moving away from summative to formative assessment.
■ Formative assignment focused on learning & development will be given greater
importance .
■ The progress card will be a holistic,360-degree,multidimensional report that reflects
the progress as well as the uniqueness of each learner in the cognitive, affective,
and psychomotor domains.
■ Progress card will include self-assessment, peer assessment and teacher
assessment.
■ Progress of the child in project-based and inquiry-based learning, quizzes, role plays,
group work, portfolios to be included in progress card.
Support for Gifted Students/Students
with Special Talent
■ Teachers will aim to encourage students with singular interests or talents in the
classroom by giving them supplementary enrichment material and guidance and
encouragement.
■ Project-based Clubs and Circles will be encouraged and supported at the levels of
schools, school complexes, districts,& beyond.
■ Examples include Science Circles, Math Circles, Chess Circles, Poetry Circles, Drama
Circles, Debate Circles, Sports Circles, Eco-Clubs, yoga Club etc.
■ Olmpiads & competition in various Subjects to be conducted across the Country.
■ Extensive use of technology to encourage gifted/talented Children.
■ B.Eds. Programming may also allow specialisation in education of gifted Children.
National Curriculum Framework for
School Education (NCFSE)
■ The NCERT Will create new comprehensive NCFSE 2020-2021 based
on nep2020 principles & curriculum needs after discussion with all
stakeholders including state government, ministries.
■ NCFSE document will be reviewed & changed once every 5to10 years.
■ It will made available in all regional language.
