The Collatz Conjecture is a famous unsolved problem in mathematics. The rule is:
Start with any positive integer.
If the number is even, divide it by 2.
If the number is odd, multiply it by 3 and add 1.
Repeat the process with the new number.
The conjecture states that no matter what number you start with, you will always reach 1.
a. What is the next number in the sequence after 10? (1)
b. Does the sequence starting with 6 reach 1? (1)
c. Apply the Collatz process to the number 7 and show the sequence until you reach 1. (2)

Solution
1. Choose the correct option:
1. (c) 85400, 7861, 7500, 5000
Explanation:
Rearrange the numbers from biggest to smallest.
2. (d) 9741, 1479
Explanation:
The greatest number is 9741. Rearrange the digits in descending order.
The smallest number is 1479. Rearrange the digits in ascending order.
3. (b) 99987
Explanation:
The largest 5-digit number with three different digits is 99987.
4. (d) 7621, 1267
Explanation:
The greatest number is 7621. Rearrange the digits in descending order.
The smallest number is 1267. Rearrange the digits in ascending order.
5. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation:
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
2. Fill in the blanks with suitable words:
1. 1. Descending
2. 1023
3. Smallest
3. State whether each of the following statement is True or False:
1. (b) False
Explanation:
false
Because, the numbers 4578, 4587, 5478, 5487 are in ascending order.
2. (a) True

true
3. (b) False
Explanation:
false
Because, the largest six-digit telephone number that can be formed by using digits 5, 3, 4, 7, 0, 8 only once is
875430.
4. Answer the following questions:
1. 4280 to the nearest hundred = 4300 and, 5295 to the nearest hundred = 5300
∴ Required sum = (4300 + 5300) = 9600
2. 89,24,379 to the nearest tens is 89,24,380
89,24,379 to the nearest hundreds is 89,24,400
89,24,379 to the nearest thousands is 89,24,000
3. 27487 to the nearest ten thousand is 30000
5. If the digit at ones place is less than 5, replace one digit by 0 and keep the other digit as they are:
And if the digit at ones place is 5 or more than 5, increase tens digit by 1, and replace one digit by 0.
265 - 270
6. Answer the following questions:
1. ∵ 537 correct to the nearest ten = 540
and, 382 correct to the nearest ten = 380
∴ Required difference = 540 - 380 = 160
2. There are 514 mango trees and the owner plans to plant 178 more, for a total of 514 trees + 178 trees = 692 trees.
Rounding 692 trees to the nearest hundred gives 700 trees. So the estimated number of mango trees in the orchard is
700 trees.
7. Answer the following questions:
1. There are 768 houses in the town and about 7 people live in each house. Rounding off 768 houses to the nearest ten
gives 770 houses. Rounding off 7 people to the nearest ten gives 10 people. An estimate of the total number of people
living in the town is 770 houses × 10 people/house = 7700 people. So the estimated population of the town is 7700
people.
2. (i) 95432 is the smallest number.
(ii) 70002509 is the greatest number.
(iii) Arranged in ascending order, these numbers are as follows :
95432, 527864, 18950049, 70002509.
Arranged in descending order, these numbers are as follows :
70002509, 18950049, 527864, 95432.
8. Answer the following questions:
1. i. 4567963
ii. 4567923

iii. 4517923

2. We make a place value chart for the given numbers as shown below:
TL L TTh Th H T O
1 6 2 5 8 9
5 2 4 7 0
3 4 0 0 5 9
7 1 2 6 6 9 0
Of the given numbers, 52470 has the least number of digits.
∴ 52470 is the smallest number.
7126690 has the most number of digits.
∴ 7126690 is the greatest number.
Numbers 162589 and 126690 have equal number of digits.
At the leftmost, both of these numbers have the same digits, i.e. 1 each.
At the second place from the left, the number 162589 has digit 6 and the number 126690 has digit 2.
Since, 6 > 2. ⇒ 7592810 > 6253278.
Therefore, the given numbers in ascending order are:
52470 < 126690 < 162589 < 7126690.
9. a. The next number in the sequence after 10 is 5 (since 10 is even, divide by 2).
b. Yes, the sequence starting with 6 reaches 1 (6 → 3 → 10 → 5 → 16 → 8 → 4 → 2 → 1).
c. The sequence for 7 is:
- 7 (odd) → 22 (even) → 11 (odd) → 34 (even) → 17 (odd) → 52 (even) → 26 (even) → 13 (odd) → 40 (even) →
20 (even) → 10 (even) → 5 (odd) → 16 (even) → 8 (even) → 4 (even) → 2 (even) → 1.

The Collatz Conjecture is still unsolved because no one has been able to prove that it holds for all positive integers,
despite extensive testing and computational evidence.
