II. READING
Exercise 1. Read the passage and answer the following questions.
Cars and trucks are surely convenient, and most of US couldn’t live without them, but they have
become very expensive to run and harmful to the environment. Gas prices have been increasing, and
carbon-dioxide emissions from cars pollute the environment and contribute to global warming. As a
result, hybrid cars and electric cars have been economical and environmentally friendly alternatives
to traditional vehicles. They would be a good choice for the near future. Hybrid cars combine two
sources of energy such as a battery-powered electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The
driver decides which source of power is appropriate for a given journey. Short rides to the grocery
store or the post office could use the electric motor, while weekends in the country may require the
internal combustion engine. Electric cars run on rechargeable batteries rather than fuel. They are
rather quiet on the road. The best thing about them is they cause about 97% less pollution than
regular cars. But there are some disadvantages, too. The battery runs out of energy after driving a
short distance, and it takes much time to recharge the battery. Electric cars also are expensive. Their
batteries are still expensive and wear out in just a few years.

2. Traditional vehicles pollute the environment and contribute to global warming because
A. they use more gas C. they are convenient
B. they emit carbon-dioxide D. they are necessary for US
3. What are hybrid cars?
A. They are vehicles that have two electric motors.
B. They are vehicles that have two internal combustion engines.
C. They can be used for short rides and long journeys.
D. They are vehicles that use two types of energy.
4. Which of the following is an advantage of electric cars according to the passage?
A. They cause about 97% less pollution than traditional cars.
B. The battery runs out of energy after driving a short distance.
C. The battery is expensive and wears out after a few years.
D. It takes much time to recharge the battery.
5. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Hybrid cars are better than electric cars.
B. Electric cars are better than hybrid cars.
C. Electric cars and hybrid cars are better than traditional cars.
D. Electric cars and hybrid cars are worse than traditional cars.
Exercise 2. Read the passage then decide whether the statements are True (T) or False (F).
A rocket uses fuel to make power for the engine. The fuel is set on fire inside the rocket. As the
fuel burns, it creates gases that have great pressure. These gases are blasted out of the rocket
engines.
These gases all go out the bottom of the rocket engine where it is open. They come out so fast
and with so much power that the rocket is pushed up. It is pushed up so hard that the rocket
overcomes the force of gravity, which tries to keep everything on the ground. The force that
pushes up against the front of the rocket is called thrust.
Unlike an airplane, a rocket does not use wings to help it fly. It just uses the power and force
created by the burning fuel to make enough thrust.

Statements T/F
1. A rocket uses the energy from wind to make power for the engine
2. When the fuel burns, it creates gases that have great pressure
3. These gases come so fast but they have little power
4. The rocket is pushed up because it overcomes the force of gravity
5. The rocket has two wings to help it fly
