The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health
Nowadays , social media is reliable and available technology with a lot of benefits. It allows
us to communicate , connect and share the information .But there also other side especially
young adult get addicts on the screen . Social media have good and bad impact too. Good
impact of social media are building relationships and get motivated and had bad impact are
lost your routines schedule , poor academic and follow wrong rumors .Still , there is a rising
anxiety over the probable consequence and social media on our emotional wellness. This
essay aims investigate how social media affects mental health , both positively and
negatively . According to the Journal of technology in behavioral science 5(3) , 245-257 ,
(2020) says social media has become a prominent fixture in the lives of many individuals
facing the challenges of mental health illness.
Firstly , acsess to support groups and online communities is one way social media positively
affects mental health . It can be challenging for people with mental health concern like
depression or anxiety to connect with individuals who have comparable experience within
their nearby communities . We can also staying connected to our family members who are far
away from us . As most of the interaction takes place online teens feel less nervous while
talking and sharing ideas online . Also , they tend to spend time less time with friends in
person , due to which they lack social and communication skills . For teens communications
skills are nit only important for daily interactions but also plays a significant role for succes
in theis future careers . Besides decreasing the amount of face to face interaction , social
networking usage also reduce the quality of their social interaction . As teens prefer to stay
online most of the time , they are not able to spend quality time with their friends and family .
This leads to poor communication between their loved ons which not only damage the
essence of their relationship but may also destroy it . A study by Fardouly et al. (2018) found
that people who use image-heavy platforms often feel worse about their appearance. It’s easy
to forget that most of what we see online is edited or fake, but our minds still compare
anyway.
In past few years social networking has taken extreme . Prior to social media teens were
agigated by school bullies via internet . Ganually , a cyber bully is referred as teh use of
social media platforms for communicating false , embrassing and hostile information of
specific user . Cyberbullying has become very common in teens . The act of cyberbullying
consists of spreading rumors and lies , posting private photos and sensitive information of a
student without consent . One thing , that makes cyberbullying more harmful than the
traditional bullying is the anonymity. Cyberbullies use fake identities to humiliate and
threaten others , which helps them to continue bullying other people . Just like other victims
of bullying , cyberbullying can be traumatic . In addition to this , student may lose interest in
the acitivity they use to enjoy , stop spending time with their friend and in the extreme
cases they may commit suicide . As internet is present everywhere cyberbullying feels
permanent and victims of cyberbullying often find it difficult to feel safe even at their
homes . The Pew Research Center (2022) reported that more than half of teens have
experienced cyberbullying. That’s a lot. This kind of behavior can really hurt people
emotionally, sometimes even leading to depression or worse.
After that , it have also negative impacts . As a young student , use social media fluently
disturbs sleep and routines schedules that produce anxiety . Late night use of social media
causes depressions restless and disturbs academic results . Moreover , social media has
become an addiction . Like other addiction behavior brain responds to social media accounts
and tend to log on uncontrollaby leaving behind important tasks . Hence , this addiction of
social networking sites can not only damage mental wellbeing of teens but can also affect
their future. Poor results produces depression and many of student died from it . On social
media there is serious bad impact that some of people spread false rumors . And most of
people believe on it that produce ignorance in the society . The Sleep Foundation (2021) says
that bad sleep from social media use can make people more irritable and even more likely to
feel depressed. It’s a chain reaction less sleep, worse mood, and more stress.
As technology is growing social media has become an imperative part of our society. Social
media has proved to have both positive and negative impact on youth . However , social
networking sites have a negative effect on teens mental health as frequent use of these sites
causes mental disorders such depression , anxitey and sleep deprivation . Although social
media has enhanced our connectivity , it is also causing a decline in social and
communication skills. Due to excess use of social networking sites the quality of realtionship
has dramatically declined . Futher, cyberbullying has aslo emerged as negative effect on
social media which has increased rapidly in the past few years causing mental distress among
teens . Twenge (2019) suggested that using social media in moderation and learning how to
handle it properly can help reduce the negative impact. So, it’s not about quitting social
media completely, but being smarter about how we use it.
