CTRL Assessment Task 7

The document discusses three different scenarios for temperature and flow control in industrial processes. It recommends using Coriolis or Ultrasonic flow meters and thermocouples or RTDs for monitoring hot oil, while suggesting PID controllers for precise temperature control in a pre-heat furnace. For freeze drying, it describes using a single on/off solenoid valve to maintain a low temperature with liquid nitrogen.

ASSESSMENT TASK 7

Of the probes discussed in the reading, select which probe and control
method you feel would be the best solution, and why. Be sure to include any
pertinent details to support your opinion

1. Hot oil is flowing in a 4” diameter pipe at 30 gallons per minute

(maximum temperature 450°F). This signal will need to be read by a
computer in a control room 1500 feet away from the measurement
point. It is one of only 20 readings to be taken in the plant and none of
them are over 1500 feet from the control computer.
- To monitor hot oil flowing through a 4-inch pipe at 30 GPM and
450°F, you can use a Coriolis or Ultrasonic flow meter and a
thermocouple or RTD for temperature measurement, both
outputting a 4-20 mA signal. These signals can be transmitted
to a control room 1500 feet away using shielded twisted-pair
cables, which are reliable for distances up to 2000 feet.
Alternatively, RS-485 or HART protocols could be used for
digital communication over longer distances. In the control
room, a PLC, DCS, or SCADA system will process the data.
Ensure that the equipment is protected from the high
temperatures, using thermal insulation or remote transmitters.
2. A Pre-heat furnace is being installed to treat logs of aluminum 6” in
diameter and 10’ long prior to being moved into the extruder. The
furnace is segmented 5’ long sections, and is made up of 10 sections.
Each section has a variable control valve (4-20ma) to control the flow
of natural gas to the burners. The temperature in each segment must
be maintained at a value of 400°F to 850°F (±10°F )depending on the
segment.
- To control the temperature in the pre-heat furnace, each of the 10 sections (5’ long) will
have a 4-20 mA control valve to regulate the flow of natural gas to the burners.
Temperature sensors (RTDs or thermocouples) in each section will monitor temperatures,
maintaining a range of 400°F to 850°F with a ±10°F tolerance. A PID controller will
adjust the gas flow via the valves, ensuring precise temperature control. The system will
be integrated into a DCS or PLC for monitoring and control.
3. A freeze drying process uses liquid nitrogen to maintain the
temperature in a chamber. The desired temperature is -100°F ±2°F.
The control valve is a single on/off solenoid valve
- In the freeze drying process, liquid nitrogen is used to maintain a chamber temperature of
-100°F ±2°F. The temperature is controlled by a single on/off solenoid valve that
regulates the flow of liquid nitrogen into the chamber. When the temperature deviates
from the set point, the valve opens or closes to adjust the nitrogen flow, maintaining the
desired temperature range.
