play. Lets start with a beautiful quote “ you are braver than
you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you
think.”
Once again I welcome you all to the dramatization of the
lesson “THE ENEMY” by PEARL S BUCK.
This story is set during the ww2 and is about a Japanese
surgeon Dr Sadao Hoki and his wife Hana.
They face a very big dilemma when they find a injured US
soldier. Lets find out whether they’re saving him or leaving
him to die.
HANA: what a beautiful weather, isn’t it?
SADAO: yes, it remainds me of the day when I was a kid and
I used to with my father to the beach where we share our
thoughts that how Japan will develop in a few years! But
look at us now.
HANA: well, bad times will pass, don’t worry.
SADAO: yes you’re right.
( leaning and looking at hana)
HANA: what?
SADAO: you are as pretty as you were before, I do still
remember the day when I met you…

H: Omg! He’s bleeding.
S: Help me to turn him over.
H: He! He’s a white man!! He’s bleeding very bad
S: Wh!! What should we do with him?? It is best if we put
him back into the sea?
H: Yes you’re right!
S: But he would die!
H: look at his cap sadao
S: He’s a sailor from the US warship!
This man is a prisoner of war
H: Can you really put him back to the sea?
S: being a doctor I can’t. It’s my responsibility to treat
people.
H: then lets carry him to our house.
S: what what about the servants?
H: we’ll take of that lately!
S: ok then Hana, help me carry him.
4

H: He’s covered in blood.

S: Yes, he needs to be washed first
H: I don’t want you to touch him, I’ll tell yumi to clean him.
S: (Checks him) he will die if he is not operated. You go call
yumi.
YUMI: where’s young master?
H: He went to change his clothes. You go get some towels
and a bucket.
Y: I’ve never washed a white man madam. And I won’t wash
one as dirty as him.
H: you’ll do what your master commands.
Y: no mam, it has nothing to do with me. I’m a poor person
and it’s not my business.
(Yumi goes off)
H: Stupid Yumi! Looks like I have to do this.
CLEANS HIM…
H: Sadao you will operatehim?
S: yes get me some towels.
H: Okay! And Yumi denied to wash him.
S: so, you washed him?
H: yes I did!
S: you’ll have to give him anesthetics if needed.
H: Me? But I’ve never done this before.

S: Oh! Come on, it’s easy. The bullet us still in there, but I
can remove it as he has lost already lots of blood.
Hana was about to faint!!
S: don’t faint hana, if you stop now, he’ll surely die!
(Sadao does the operation for tom)
S: I’m not doing this for my pleasure. My friend, I don’t even
know why I’m doing this.
H: where’s the anaesthetic?
S: it’s good. You came back. He begin to stir.
H: but how should I do this?
S: saturate the napkin and hold it near his nostrils, when he
breathes badly, keep it a little away.
TOM: They got my guts…
H: sadao!!
S: shhhhh! Now he’ll wake up in few hours and change his
clothes himself.
TOM WAKES UP!
H: oh! You’re awake now, don’t be afraid.
T: wait. How can you speak English?
H: I was a long time in US.
HANA OFFERING TOM WATER..
S: Hey lie down. You want to die??
You might get yourself killed if you do things like that.

prisoner of war. No no don’t tell me anything. Don’t tell me
your name unless I ask for it.
H: yumi I need you to.
Y: madam I can’t stay if you keep the man here any longer.
H: what?
Y: master and you have been in America for so long that you
have forgotten about your own country, it’s like you’ve
started to like americans despite them being our enemies.
H: it’s not like that, sadao has been trained to not let a man
die no matter who he is.
Y: master is so proud of his skills. I’ll leave (angry)
(HANA GIVES TOM PILLS)
T: thank you so much miss. Anyways I’m Tom.
NAR: Meanwhile sadao went inside his room and started
typing a letter to the chief police of Japan, informing about
the American soldier living in his house so that to get rid off
him. But sadao himself didn’t knew why he stopped typng
the letter and didn’t complete it.
