Outfitted with enhanced video and sonar technology,
micro and mini ROVs are finding a niche in the
offshore oil and gas industry. Proponents say the
pint-sized swimmers, given their limits, can perform
a lot of tasks more safely and economically when used
in place of or alongside work class ROVs or divers.
And in an era of heightened cost-consciousness,
operators are paying heed (see page 44).

Then, in 2006, Helix was looking to

desire to explore and produce the fields led
the company to decide to use its flagship
vessel as an internal drilling and

the Q4000 ‘would be strictly an

solutions to these problems.’
Fugro is currently in the process of
putting the finishing touches to a detailed
$25 million marine survey expected to
identify the best route for the pipeline. This
project, which also involved nearshore
surveys for the four landfalls, included a
geophysical and hydrographical survey
carried out by Fugro’s Geo Prospector
vessel with the aid of an autonomous
underwater vehicle. Offshore seabed
geotechnical investigations were also
conducted by two vessels, including
Fugro’s Bucentaur.
Studies are currently ongoing on
Posidonia and on the Sulcis-Iglesiente-
Guspinese zone, a ‘site of special scientific
interest’, on the pipeline route.
Pipelay challenges
When construction does eventually get
under way, the Galsi pipelines will be
installed using both the J-lay and the
S-lay methods, although Perrone believes
contractors will be pushed to their limits to
get the job done.
‘Effectively there are only two or three
contractors who can carry out the
pipelaying,’ he said, listing Allseas,
Heerema and Saipem as the key contenders
for this work. ‘The contractors will
probably have to upgrade their equipment
to operate in such deep water,’ he added.
‘We will require some intervention after
laying in very deep waters,’ said Perrone.
One of the possibilities was rock dumping
but there is no system currently available
that can accurately place rock in these sort
of water depths, he said. ‘They can work
up to 1000-1500m. This means we have to
increase capability. Similarly pipeline
repair and retrieval equipment will have to
be upgraded.’ OE

FlexLNG’s Fjeld said that the industry
was getting increasingly comfortable
with the FLNG concept. ‘Some companies
are even regarding FLNG as proven even
though it is two years away from the first
one actually floating out of the yard,’ he
noted. The current challenges were more
related to how to structure a project – how
to deal with the inherent risks in the
project, who carries them, how is it
financed, what happens of things go
wrong? The push over the next 12-24
months would be on how companies get to
a position where they are actually ready
to execute a project in terms of structure
and from an overall commercial
perspective, added Fjeld.
Stewart Elliott, managing director of
Energy World Corporation, said that his
company, which had provided electricity
in Asia for many years, was moving into
the gas and clean fuels area. ‘The world is
crying out, and I think that is what this
conference seems to be missing, that we
should protect the astmosphere. LNG is
one of the cleaner, greener fuels that we
can use while we switch over to anything
else, and yet we seem to be talking more
and more about what we are going to do
rather than actually getting on and doing
it.’
Elliott said his company had equipment
on order for the first modular LNG plant
in Indonesia, and that there was interest
in putting it on to floating systems to
develop some of the stranded gas fields in
Southeast Asia. He also called for an
opening up of the market to allow access
to LNG for smaller power stations. OE
