For Undergraduate Medical Students
WHAT IS IT?
Medical science is replete with many and varied terminologies in every discipline.
For many MBBS students, these appear daunting and difficult. This workshop
aims at guiding undergraduate medicos into learning and understanding the
language of medicine using medical etymology.
Knowledge of etymology helps in understanding the meaning of complex medical
terms by breaking them down into the component parts. Etymology connects
vocabulary to prior knowledge and historical context, leading to more
meaningful and durable learning than rote memorization.
OBJECTIVES
The workshop aims to equip participants with
• A fundamental understanding of the origin of medical terms
• The ability to recognize medical terms based on their prefixes, roots and
suffixes
• The ability to associate medical terms with specific body systems
• The skill to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words
• The capacity to develop an active and extensive vocabulary of medical
terms
WHAT’S ON THE AGENDA?
This workshop will introduce the participant to medical etymology and provide
insight into the structure of medical terms related to body systems and
structures as well as disease and treatment terms.
Participants will learn hands-on how to unlock medical terms and understand
them. It will provide context and deeper understanding of terminologies, making
vocabulary retention easier and more meaningful and will enable them to
pronounce words better. They will be able to derive definitions simply by
breaking up words.
WHAT WILL BE ACHIEVED?
At the end of this workshop, the participant will have the following benefits:
meaningful learning; vocabulary expansion; improved spelling and pronunciation;
cross-linguistic connections; enhanced understanding; and motivated learning.
