Budapest
Located in the eastern European country of Hungary, the capital city of Budapest is the
seventh largest city in the European Union. The city itself is split from north to south by
the River Danube, with the ancient settlements of Buda on one bank and Pest on the other.
Buda is hilly and generally regarded as a residential area offering recreational activities.
Pest, on the other hand, is flat and while home to many, also has commercial and industrial
areas.
With its eclectic mix of architectural styles, the neo-Gothic Parliament and Romanesque
Matthias Church to name but two, Budapest has something to please everyone. It is a

popular destination, enjoying a lively café culture and attracting over 2.5 million tourists a
year. This is not surprising though as it is a fascinating place to explore both during the day
and at night. With a rich and diverse history, an intriguing mix of old and new, as well as
an abundance of cultural sights and experiences to enjoy, it really is worth a visit.
This amazing capital is a World Heritage Site and includes attractions such as the Roman
city of Aquincum, the Gothic castle of Buda, the Banks of the Danube and Andrássy
Avenue, a famously elegant avenue built to link the city centre to the city park and
showcasing some of the city’s finest palaces and houses.
Budapest is also a prominent city and its location in the centre of Europe makes it a major
road and rail intersection. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is less than five hours
away whilst Vienna, the beautiful capital city of Austria, is just three hours.
As well as being a beautiful and well-positioned city, Budapest is unique in that it is the
only world capital to have hot springs, around a hundred of them in fact. However, these
springs are not only famous for the health benefits that the minerals they contain bring, but
also for having led to the creation of a spectacular cave system under the hills of Buda.

1 The Hungarian capital of Budapest is divided into two by the River Rhine. T/F
2 Pest is the hillier of the two parts of the capital. T/F
3 Buda offers more opportunity for relaxation and leisure than Pest. T/F
4 The Hungarian capital is home to a diverse range of architectural styles. T/F
5 Approximately 2.5 million people visit the city of Budapest annually. T/F
6 The Gothic castle of Aquincum is not part of the World Heritage Site. T/F
7 Andrássy Avenue was originally designed as a means to get from the city centre to the city park.T / F
8 Budapest has excellent transport links with the rest of Europe. T/F
9 Both Vienna and Prague are more than a day’s drive away from Budapest. T/F
10 Whilst other capital cities have geo-thermal springs, none have as many as Budapest. T/F
