BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT) is a water-based bodymaker lubricant\coolant which is
designed for handling a wide range of drawing and ironing requirements over varying plant conditions. In addition, this
product will eliminate the requirement for routine additions of biocide. Elimination of the tankside biocide additions
improves coolant control and reduces worker exposure. The BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461
COOLANT) is considered part of a total lubricant package which includes the DTI series of post lubricants and cupper
lubricants.

3. The Process:

The complete process normally consists of the following steps:

A. Premixing the BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT) in water of appropriate hardness.
B. Charging or maintaining level in the coolant filtration system
C. Pumping the BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT) emulsion to the tool pack
D. Drawing and ironing of the cans
E. Return of the coolant to the Sump\Dirty Tank
F. Removal of aluminum debris and un-emulsified tramp oil through skimming
G. Removal of aluminum debris and tramp oil through filtration
H. Return of the coolant to the Clean Tank for pumping to the bodymakers

4. Materials:

BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT)

Water Softener (only under conditions where hardness > 150 ppm)
pH Meter
Buffer Solutions
Testing Reagents and Apparatus

5. Equipment:

The filtration system should be fabricated from corrosion resistant steel. Approved welding techniques must be used.
Bodymaker punches of steel or carbide and ironing rings of carbide are used as directed by the individual plant.

Process piping and pumps should also be corrosion resistant steel. Special care must be used when selecting metal
fittings to minimize “mixed-metal” cell corrosion potential whereby accelerated corrosion may take place.

All process circulation pump seals, valve seats, door seals, etc., which come into contact with the process solution should
manufactured from FKM, PTFE, or 26% Nitrile Buna-N.

Chemical feed pump parts and other elastomers which may come into contact with the concentrated replenishing chemical
should be FKM, PTFE, or 26% Nitrile Buna-N. Polyurethanes, Natural Rubber and Polyolefins are not suitable.

Since the BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT) is formulated with a powerful blend of
detergents and surfactants it is recommended that bodymaker housings be constructed out of 316 Stainless Steel so that
painting is not necessary. For equipment which must be painted, a two part epoxy should be recommended by a reputable
paint supplier.

6. Pretreatment - Cupper and Post Lubricant:

DTI series post lubricants are preferred for all metal which will be drawn and ironed by the BONDERITE L-FM 461
ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT). Likewise for cupper lubricants it is very important to use DTI series cupper
lubricants to ensure proper lubrication and metal control in the redraw operation. Adequate cup weights of the proper
chemistry provide the lubrication foundation for BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT)
coolant.

7. Lubrication\Cooling D&I cans with BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT):

System Clean Out:

In a start-up condition where the coolant system is being freshly charged it is important to first perform a system clean out.
This can be accomplished according to WI MH-Research & Development 942 A.6.1-13. The purpose of the system clean
out is to remove any metal debris, sludge and bio growth from the coolant system hardware which will in turn allow for
smoother system start up.

Water Quality:
Because plant waters vary from location to location, it may be necessary to reduce the hardness of the premix makeup
water. This can be accomplished by use of a salt exchange type water softener. Dirt and sludge build-up are the typical
problems encountered if the premix makeup water is excessively hard. In addition, the ability of BONDERITE L-FM 461
ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT) to retard the growth of bacteria is reduced by excessive levels of hard water
salts.

Emulsion Make-Up:
The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for this product should be consulted for first aid and handling information before
attempting to use the product.

After the coolant system is thoroughly cleaned out, it should be built up with BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as
DTI 461 COOLANT) at the rate of 3.0 gallons (11.1 L) to 100 Gallons of water volume.

Emulsion Maintenance:
There are two options for emulsion maintenance.

In the first method the BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT) is mixed in a premix tank at a
rate of approximately 1.5 gallons (5.7 L) to 100 Gallons of water volume. The emulsion is prepared by utilizing a simple
blade type mixer.

In the second method the BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT) is added directly to the
Clean Tank or other component of the coolant system loop. This is typically achieved by use of a liquid metering pump
(LMI) which injects the BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as DTI 461 COOLANT) at regular prescribed intervals.
The pump dosage amount is typically set to add between 6 to 10 gallons of BONDERITE L-FM 461 ACHESON (known as
DTI 461 COOLANT) per 1 million cans produced.

The system clean out, water quality and emulsion preparation information contained herein are normal for most
installations; however, your Henkel Surface Technologies representative may suggest a deviation if indicated by local
conditions.

Operation:
Temperature: 100 to 120°F (38 to 49°C)
Flow Rate: 15 to 25 Gal/minute
Filtration: 5 micron Filter Paper (Some polypropylene content is preferred)
Skimmer: Rope Mop preferred

8. Testing and Control:

The following tests should be performed at least once every 12 hours. Your Henkel representative will furnish the
appropriate Operating Procedure for your location.
