Library Automation Software
• Library automation software is designed to
streamline and enhance the management of
library operations by automating tasks such as
cataloging, circulation, acquisitions, and
patron services.
• These software help libraries modernize their
operations, reduce manual errors, and
improve user experiences.

Key features of library
automation software
1) Cataloging/Categorization
Allows libraries to create and manage a digital
catalog of resources, including books, journals, and
other materials, with detailed descriptions.
2) Barcoding/ RFID
Uses barcodes or RFID tags to automate check-in
and checkout processes, manage inventory,
and prevent theft.
3) Circulation Management
Tracks borrowing activities, manages loans, and
sends reminders for overdue items.

4) Patron Management
Handles user accounts, tracks borrowing
history, and provides access to library resources.

Types of library automation
software
• Library automation software can be categorized
into several types based on their functionality,
cost and deployment models.
• The main types are as follows:
Open-source library software
Commercial library software
Integrated Library Systems (ILS)
Library Information Systems (LIS)
Specialized Library Automation Software
Cloud-based Library Automation Software

• Open-source library software
These systems are freely available, customizable,
and often supported by a community of developers.
They offer comprehensive tools for cataloging,
circulation, and acquisitions. Example: Koha, NewGenLib
• Commercial library software
These are proprietary systems that require a
purchase or subscription.
They often provide robust features, support, and
scalability but can be more expensive.
Example: SOUL, LIBSYS, SLIM

• Integrated Library Systems (ILS)
ILS systems integrate various library functions
such as cataloging, circulation, and acquisitions into a
single platform, offering a comprehensive management
solution.
Example: SirsiDynix Symphony, Alexandria
• Library Information Systems (LIS)
These tools help manage citations and references,
which can be part of broader library automation
efforts.
Example: EndNote, RefWorks, Zotero

• Specialized Library Automation Software
These tools focus on specific aspects like catalog
management, inventory tracking, or patron services,
often designed for smaller libraries or personal
collections.
Example: Libib, TinyCat, Book Collector Pro
• Cloud-based Library Automation Software
These systems are hosted online, providing
flexibility and accessibility from anywhere, which
is beneficial for libraries with multiple branches or
remote staff.

Free/Open Source Library
Software
• In the present era digitalized databases are
being compiled in majority of the library services,
which are based on information technology
as well as resources available in electronic
formats.
• In order to manage all kinds of resources and
information, libraries require high quality
integrated software.
3/11/2025 14

• However, the high price of such software
prevents most of the libraries from using them.
• So as to deal with this issue, and for the
benefit of research scholars and the user
communities of libraries, different NGOs,
organizations and individuals have developed
software, which are distributed free of cost.
• Such software are free/open source software,
they are extensively available on the internet and
can be downloaded, installed and
distributed.

• Open Source Software is computer software
whose source code is available under a license
(or arrangement such as the public domain)
that permits users to use, change, and
improve the software.
