1. Project Overview

This proposal seeks financial support under the Swavalamban Scheme to establish a small-
scale incense stick (agarbatti) manufacturing and packaging unit. The unit will utilize semi-
automatic and automatic machinery to enhance productivity and reduce dependency on
manual labour. The applicant aims to generate sustainable self-employment and create jobs
for 2–3 additional workers.

2. Overview of Agarbatti Industry in Tripura

a.Introduction
The agarbatti (incense stick) industry in Tripura has emerged as a vital micro and small
enterprise sector due to the state's rich bamboo resources and availability of semi-skilled
labour. Tripura is one of India’s top bamboo-producing states, providing a key raw material
for incense stick production.

b. Cultural and Market Demand

Agarbatti is deeply embedded in Indian religious and cultural practices. In Tripura, its usage
spans temples, households, and community rituals. Demand remains stable throughout the
year and rises during festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and local celebrations.

c. Employment Potential
This industry offers sustainable income opportunities for women and unemployed youth in
both urban and rural regions. Government and NGO-led training initiatives have prepared a
sizable workforce for incense stick rolling and packaging.

d. Government Support
Under Swavalamban, state schemes, financial assistance, subsidies, and training are provided
for agarbatti production. Automatic machines are promoted for efficiency and productivity.

e. Market Accessibility
Tripura’s products have easy access to regional markets in Assam, West Bengal, and export
potential to Bangladesh via the Agartala Integrated Check Post (ICP).

f. Availability of Raw Materials

Raw materials include bamboo sticks, charcoal powder, jigat powder, and aromatic oils,
which are either locally available or sourced from Guwahati and Kolkata.

g. Scope of Automation
Use of semi-automatic and fully automatic machines enhances rolling speed (150–200
sticks/minute) and ensures consistent quality, making the unit more competitive and scalable.
