Ex 10.: Read …Nowadays, teenagers have changed considerably in comparison to the teens in the past in how they spend
their free time. This is a “technology” generation. For teens in today’s world, mobile phones, the Internet, and TV are
essential parts of their everyday life. Most teenagers prefer watching TV and surfing the Internet to reading books. They
don’t like reading because watching TV is easier and they don’t have to use their own imagination. Teenagers prefer to
spend free time in front of a computer rather than to do physical activities such as playing football, riding bikes or going
swimming. According to a recent study, teenagers growing up in the 1970s and 1980s enjoyed more than two hours of
outside play each weekday, and a further nine hours at weekends, whatever the weather. However, today's teens play outside
for just over an hour each weekday, and fewer than five hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Teens now often communicate
to their friends by instant messages instead of talking face-to-face. When they want to share their feelings or some private
thoughts, they will post them on Facebook. This makes it easier to get comments or receive encouragement from friends.
Keeping a diary is out of date now.Teens now spend more time meeting friends in places like fast food restaurants or cafes.
They like to eat fast food, greasy food and sugary drinks more than home-cooked meals. This leads to obesity.
In conclusion, the lifestyle of teenagers has changed a lot compared to the past. Parents should encourage their
children to play outdoors more. This helps them not only stay active and healthy but also socialize with friends as well as
create treasured childhood memories.

(3) _______ the water cycle.
The water cycle has four stages: storage, evaporation, precipitation, and runoff. Water on Earth gets stored
(4)_____oceans, lakes, rivers, ice, and even underground. Water goes from storage into the atmosphere by a process
called evaporation. When water evaporates, it changes from a liquid (5)______a gas, called water vapor. Water vapor
goes up into (6) ______atmosphere. Water returns to the Earth as precipitation in rain or snow by changing into drops of
water (7)______the air gets cold enough. Clouds are collections (8)_____water droplets. Most precipitation falls into the
oceans and goes right back into storage.Water that falls on land always flows from (9)_______ places to lower ones. This
flow is called runoff. Water from land flows into streams. Streams join together to make (10) _______and eventually the
water flows into storage in the oceans. Then the water cycle starts all over again.
Ex 11. Read … Many of the most damaging and life-threatening types of weather - torrential rains, severe
thunderstorms, and tornadoes - begin quickly, strike suddenly, and dissipate rapidly, devastating small regions while
leaving neighboring areas untouched. One such event, a tornado, struck the northeastern section of Edmonton, Alberta, in
July 1987. Total damages from the tornado exceeded $ 250 million, the highest ever for any Canadian storm.
Conventional computer models of the atmosphere have limited value in predicting short-lived local storms like the
Edmonton tornado, because the available weather data are generally not detailed enough to allow computers to detect the
subtle atmospheric changes that precede these storms. In most nations, for example, weather balloon observations are
taken just once every twelve hours at locations typically separated by hundreds of miles. With such limited data,
conventional forecasting models do a much better job predicting general weather conditions over large regions than they
do forecasting specific local events.Until recently, the observation-intensive approach needed for accurate, very short-
range forecasts, or "Nowcasts", was not feasible. The cost of equipping and operating many thousands of conventional
weather stations was prohibitively high, and the difficulties involved in rapidly collecting and processing the raw weather
data from such a network were insurmountable. Fortunately, scientific and technological advances have overcome most of
these problems. Radar systems, automated weather instruments, and satellites are all capable of making detailed, nearly
continuous observation over large regions at a relatively low cost. Communications satellites can transmit data around the
world cheaply and instantaneously, and modern computers can quickly compile and analyzing this large volume of
weather information. Meteorologists and computer scientists now work together to design computer programs and video
equipment capable of transforming raw weather data into words, symbols, and vivid graphic displays that forecasters can
interpret easily and quickly. As meteorologists have begun using these new technologies in weather forecasting offices,
Nowcasting is becoming a reality.

5. With which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree?
A. The observation-intensive approach is no longer useful. B. Weather predictions are becoming more accurate.

Every year, the average temperature of the Earth’s surface gets a little bit warmer. This gradual trend is called global
warming. Warmer weather may sound nice, but global warming is something to be very concerned about.
Scientists are worried that continued warmer temperatures could damage the environment in many devastating ways.
Rising temperatures might cause plants and animals to become extinct. They could melt enough polar ice to cause the
levels of the sea to rise. Weather patterns could also change. There might be more droughts or serious storms with
flooding. In some areas, human diseases could spread. What is causing global warming? Humans are mostly to blame.
Pollution from factories and cars add toxic gases to the air. These gases rise to the Earth’s atmosphere. As the sun’s rays
warm the Earth, the gases work much like the glass in a greenhouse. They help trap the heat in the atmosphere and make
the Earth grow warmer. That is why they are nicknamed “greenhouse gases.” It is our responsibility to take care of our
planet. Global warming is a serious problem with serious consequences. If we want future generations to enjoy their time
on Earth, we must act now!

Ex 11. Read the text …. Two of the most dangerous storms which affect America are hurricanes and tornadoes. They
are very much feared by anyone who may live in the path of their destruction. Every year homes are destroyed by their
fury and often lives are lost. Most people who live near the coast are forced to evacuate their homes and to move to safer
areas until the storm passes. Floods are caused along the coasts by both the heavy rain and a storm tide that is
considerably above normal water level. The high winds, coastal flooding and heavy rains associated with a hurricane
cause enormous damage. Hurricanes usually develop between July and October. Once they hit the land, they carry
tremendous power with driving rain and wind. Tornadoes are violent low-pressured storms. These storms occur most
often during the summer months and are noticeable by their strong wind and lack of rain. The sky turns black as dust is
sucked up into the air. Tornadoes are capable of lifting quite heavy objects from the ground. They can pick up trees and
cars right into the air and even uplift heavier objects such as homes and railway cars. Both hurricanes and tornadoes
cause millions of dollars worth of damage to life and property every year. Today they can be predicted more easily than in
the past, but they cannot be stopped or ignored.

Ex 10. Read the passage carefully, …In addition to the great ridges and volcanic chains, the oceans conceal another
form of undersea mountains: the strange guyot ( ngọn núi cô lập dưới núi lửa), or flat-topped seamount. No marine
geologist even suspected the existence of these isolated mountains until they were discovered by geologist Harry H. Hess
in 1946. He was serving at the time as naval officer on a ship equipped with a fathometer. Hess named these truncated
peaks for the nineteenth-century Swiss-born geologist Arnold Guyot, who had served on the faculty of Princeton
University for thirty years. Since then, hundreds of guyots have been discovered in every ocean but the Arctic. Like
offshore canyons, guyots present a challenge to oceanographic theory. They are believed to be extinct volcanoes. Their
flat tops indicate that they once stood above or just below the surface, where the action of waves leveled off their peaks.
Yet today, by definition, their summits are at least 600 feet below the surface, and some are as deep as 8,200 feet. Most
lie between 3,200 feet and 6,500 feet. Their tops are not really flat but slope upward to a low pinnacle at the center.
Dredging from the tops of guyots has recovered basalt and coral rubble, and that would be expected from the eroded tops
of what were once islands. Some of this material is over 80 million years old. Geologists think the drowning of the guyots
involved two processes: The great weight of the volcanic mountains depressed the sea floor beneath them, and the level of
the sea rose a number of times, especially when the last Ice Age ended, some 8,000 to 11.000 years ago.

C. There are more guyots there than in any other ocean. D. It is impossible that guyots were ever formed there.
6. The author states that offshore canyons and guyots have which of the following characteristics in common?

Sedge Mat Craft Village In Tien Giang Province
In the Mekong Delta., Long Dinh village of Tien Giang province is famous for its traditional craft of weaving flowered
mats. The mat's high quality makes them popular domestically, and they are also exported to markets worldwide including
Korea, Japan and America. In spite of its well-established reputation for this traditional craft, mat weaving only started
here some 50 years ago. It was first introduced by immigrants from Kim Son, a famous mat weaving village in the northern
province of Ninh Binh. However, the technique of weaving sedge mats in Long Dinh, as compared with other places in
the South, is somewhat different. Long Dinh branded mats are thicker and have more attractive colours and pattems.
Weaving sedge mats is similar to growing rice. Long Dinh mat production mainly occurs during the dry season, from
January to April. Weavers have to work their hardest in May and June, otherwise, when the rainy season starts in July,
they will have to put off finishing their products till the next dry season. No matter how much work it requires, Long Dinh
mat producers stick with this occupation, as it brings a higher income than growing rice. This trade provides employment
for thousands of local labourers. At present, nearly 1,000 households in Long Dinh village live on weaving mats. To better
meet market demands, Long Dinh mat weavers have created more products in addition to the traditional sedge mats.
Particularly, they are producing a new type of mat made from the dried stalks of water hyacinth, a common material in
the Mekong Delta. Thanks to the planning and further investment, the mat weaving occupation has indeed brought in more
income for local residents. Their living standards have improved considerably, resulting in better conditions for the whole

Ex 10. Read … Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to
use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are means of
communication – having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected. The explosion in mobile phone use
around the world has made some health professionals worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people
may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In England, there has been a serious debate about this issue.
Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity of such ideas. They say that there is no proof that
mobile phones are bad for your health. On the other hand, medical studies have shown changes in the brain cells of some
people who use mobile phones. Signs of change in the issues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning
equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at young age because of serious memory loss. He couldn't
remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone
for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. His family doctor blamed his mobile
phone use, but his employer's doctor didn't agree. What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer
is radiation. High – tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone
companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about. As the discussion about
their safety continues, it appears that it's best to use mobile phones less often. Use your regular phone of you want to talk
for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient,
especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health.
So for now, it's wise not to use your mobile phone too often.

Ex 11. Read ….Two of the most dangerous storms which affect America are hurricanes and tornadoes. They are very
much feared by anyone who may live in the path of their destruction. Every year homes are destroyed by their fury
and often lives are lost. Most people who live near the coast are forced to evacuate their homes and to move to safer areas
until the storm passes. Floods are caused along the coasts by both the heavy rain and a storm tide that is considerably
above normal water level. The high winds, coastal flooding and heavy rains associated with a hurricane cause enormous
damage. Hurricanes usually develop between July and October. Once they hit land they carry tremendous power with
driving rain and wind. Tornadoes are violent low - pressured storms. These storms occur most often during the summer
months and are noticeable by their strong wind and lack of rain. The sky turns black as dust is sucked up into the air.
Tornadoes are capable of lifting quite heavy objects from the ground. They can pick up trees and cars right into the air
and even uplift heavier objects such as homes and railway cars. Both hurricanes and tornadoes cause millions of dollars
worth of damage to life and property every year. Today they can be predicted more easily than in the past, but they cannot
be stopped or ignored.
