The Founder Viewing Guide
IB Econ SL Y1
Directions: As you watch, answer the following questions using examples from the film and relevant
economic concepts.
1) [2:30] Do you agree with Ray’s logic? In your own words, explain what he means by if
you increase supply then demand follows.
No, because increasing supply doesn’t decrease the Production Cost of each unit, and if
consumer’s aren’t willing to spend more than the production cost (like they would at the time),
then demand wouldn’t increase either.
2) [16:15] In this scene, Ray gets a behind-the-scenes look at how McDonald’s operates.
What is it about their system that makes them different from their competitors? Why is
this important from an economic perspective?
3) [25:10] Mac McDonald says that he and his brother were an overnight sensation, 30
years in the making. What can you learn from their captivating story that explains the
viability of new firms in a free-market economy?
4) [32:00] During this discussion between Ray Kroc and his wife he asks her, “Why should I
settle when other men won’t?” She feels that he is not home enough to enjoy their life
together. Do you think it’s possible to persistently pursue your dreams but also take time
to enjoy life? Be sure to use terms like “social welfare” and “externality” in your response.
5) [49:50] The McDonald brothers, especially Dick, are worried about maintaining
standards in their franchises. What are at least three standards that are not being met
with this franchise that Ray is checking on in this scene and why is this important from
an economic perspective?
6) [1:00:30] Why has Ray been more successful with these newest franchisees than the
first few from the country club? Use details from the movie in your explanation.
7) [1:25:35] In your own words, summarize how this new character, Mr. Sonneborn, plans
to help Ray Kroc. In doing so, explain how his advice is different than what Ray Kroc has
been trying to do.
8) [1:37:00] What would you do if you were in the McDonalds’ shoes? Explain what you
would do with this blank check and why you would make that decision.
9) [1:49:20] Were you surprised to learn at the end of the film that Ray Kroc didn’t honor the
handshake royalty deal with the McDonalds? Use details from the movie to support your
answer.
10)[END] Ray Kroc’s motivation to keep going and not to give up can be summarized by this
quote from the film:
“One word... PERSISTENCE. Nothing in this world can take the place of good old
persistence. Talent won't. Nothing's more common than unsuccessful men with
talent. Genius won't. Unrecognized genius is practically a cliche. Education won't.
Why, the world is full of educated fools. Persistence and determination alone are
all powerful."
Put these four characteristics in order from most important to least important for success
in a market-based economy; talent, genius, education and persistence. Be sure to give
an explanation for why you ordered the characteristics in this way. You can use details
from the movie and/or experiences from life around you to support your answers.
