 Not as widely used
 Less support
 No guarantee of quality or that it works correctly.
 Multiple versions of same software may occur
 One can generally only get open source software from the Internet.
 May not be able to share data with other programs (2)

3.1.3 Shareware is software that is often ‘time’ limited in that you can use it for a period of time.
After this period or should you wish to get the ‘full’ version of the program with access to
all its features, you will need to pay for it  (‘try before you pay).
Freeware has no restrictions.  (2)

3.1.4 A licence agreement that allows a company/organisation to an unrestricted number of

installations of the software within the company or organisation.  This is cheaper than
purchasing individual licences for each computer.  (2)

3.2.1 Operating systems  and utility programs/software  (2)

3.2.2 Two advantages of integrated office suites: 

 Same/similar interface / easy to learn
 Cheaper than purchasing separate programs
 Can easily share/exchange data, etc. (2)

3.3.1 Rich Text (.rtf) format files preserve ‘rich text’/basic formatting  including text
formatting, such as bold/italics, fonts/font sizes, page setup and tab settings and even
images. (1)

3.3.2 Use the Save As / Save as type option. (1)

2
3.4 Compression software compresses files/makes them smaller. 
Used to save space (accept any example such as for attachments.)  (2)

3.5.1 THREE reasons why one might ‘lose’ data or files:   

 Accidental deletion/formatting
 Hardware failure
 Viruses/malware
 Accidental overwriting
 Corruption of files (not malware), etc. (3)

3.5.2 TWO reasons why it is a better to backup files and data on an external hard drive: 
 If hard drive fails/computer stolen both the originals files and backup are lost.
 Backups can be deleted/overwritten
 Easy to remove external hard drive offsite in case of fire/theft etc. (2)

3.5.3 TWO reasons why external drives are popular choice compared to CD/ DVD (backup) 
 Faster to backup to
 Easy to use/no specialised software needed/connect to USB
 Bigger capacities
 Easy to carry round/portability compared to many CDs/DVDs, etc. (2)

[22]
Question 4

4.1 CPU / processor  ‘Speed’  (2)

4.2 Separate keys  for every letter/number etc. 

Award 1 mark for ‘full keyboard’ or description of layout (QWERTY) (2)

4.3.1 2 GB  (1)

4.3.2 Memory is needed for programs/data currently being used/processed. 

Storage needs to store all programs/data on a permanent basis.  (2)

4.3.3 TWO other differences between memory and storage other than their function: 
 Memory (RAM) is faster
 Memory is more expensive per unit
 Memory is volatile and storage not
 Memory is electronic and storage is usually magnetic/optical, etc. (2)

4.4 Operating system  (1)

4.5 A multi-touch display can detect more than one ‘touch’ of the screen simultaneously. 
Any suitable example such as pinching/squeezing photos.  (2)

4.6 It refers to the maximum resolution of the screen. 

The higher the resolution, the better the quality of the ‘image’. 
(Also accept explanation in terms of horizontal and vertical pixels for one mark) (2)

3
4.7 Camera  The higher the specification, the better the quality/resolution of the images
taken with the camera.  (2)

4.8 Biometric refers to technology that measures/scans something biologically unique to

each person. 
Access would only be granted to use the flash disk if the ‘correct’/matching finger print
was used.  (2)

4.9.1 Adobe/Acrobat Reader  (1)

4.9.2 Give ONE reason PDF files are so commonly used: 
 Do not need original software it was created to open/read it (accept reference to
cost)
 File sizes can sometimes be reduced
 Files can be set so that they cannot be changed, etc. (1)

4.10 Ergonomics refers to the design of the workplace for the comfort and safety of people. 
The smartphone will have been designed/have features that makes it easy/comfortable

(of the web pages).  (2)

5.1.2 TWO advantages of getting information from electronic media: 

 Is often more current/up-to-date
 Easier to gather information
 Easier to edit/process information
 ‘Portable’/do not need to carry books/magazines around
 Can be shared easily etc. (2)

5.1.3 Accept any ONE valid/realistic situation where opinions/data related to humans (not
biographical) data is needed.  (e.g. their preferences / likes /dislikes etc.) (1)

5.1.4 To steal/ pass off ideas or words of another as one's own without crediting the source.  (1)

5.2.1 Any ONE advantage of portable computers, other than the fact that they are portable:  (1)
 Can operate on battery power
 Lower power consumption
 Take up less space than desktop computer
 All-in-one design / no need to attach monitors, keyboards etc.

5.2.2 TWO potential disadvantages of portable computers over desktop computers:  (2)
 Can easily be stolen
 More expensive/difficult to upgrade
 More expensive than desktop equivalent
4
 Expensive to insure
 More ‘fragile’/easier to ‘damage’ than desktop
 Lifespan of battery is limited/expensive to replace

5.3 A computer  that provides shared resources to network users.  (2)

5.4 TWO functions:  Copy, fax, e-mail, scan (2)

[13]

Question 6

A WAN is spread over a wide geographical area  (such as a city, across provinces or
countries and even continents). (2)

6.2 TWO examples of how resources, besides data or files, are shared on a network: 
 Any hardware example e.g. printer
 Any software example e.g. using program off server
 Any example related to e-communications e.g. shared Internet connection, etc. (2)

6.3 Data is located in one central ‘location’  and therefore more ‘vulnerable’.
Malware can easily spread to other computers/other users.  (2)

6.4 TWO potential disadvantages of networks other than malware and security threats: 
 Need expertise/network administrator to run.
 Problem with network can mean that none of the users can work on network.
 Central point of failure e.g. server not working, can cause data loss.
 Additional costs to set up (accept examples such as servers). (2)
[8]

Question 7

7.1.1 Formatting (red) applied to word being found (data). 

Formatting should instead be specified on the replacement word (information).  (2)
7.2.2 Undo the replacements 
