HOW TO WRITE A NEWSPAPER REPORT
INFORMATION INCLUDED
In a news report, we give the readers information about something which has happened before they are
reading that piece of news.
It must include the following basic facts:
- WHAT happened - WHEN it happened
- WHERE it happened - WHO was involved
Apart from that, a newspaper report include extra information such as:
- further details about the event
- what is happening now / what is the current situation
CONNECTORS OF PURPOSE
When we write a newspaper reports, we often use connectors of purpose
- TO / IN ORDER TO (para, con el objetivo de). They are followed by a base form verb.
The police arrived to arrest the suspect. (La policía llegó PARA arrestar al sospechoso)

A private detective was hired in order to investigate the crime. (Se contrató un detective privado

- SO THAT (para que, de modo que). It has a full sentence after it (subject + verb + complement).
He was being careful so that nobody saw him. (Estaba teniendo cuidado para que nadie lo viera)

STRUCTURE
- Opening. It includes the basic information: event, location, time, who was involved
- Body. It explains the details of the event. It can be one or more paragraphs
- Closing. It tells what is current situation of the event, what is happening now.
MURDER AT MOBILE WORLD
OPENING A sales assistant at the Mobile World Shop on Brompton Road was killed by a robber on
Wednesday afternoon.
The sales assistant, Rob Brown, was stabbed and more than £1, 300 was stolen from the
BODY cash register. The manager, Ellen Duncan, was not in the shop when the robbery
(details) occurred. She had left to / in order to get take-away meals for herself and Mr Brown. By
the time she returned, Mr Brown was dead. Apparently, he was killed with a knife but this
information has not been confirmed yet.
At the moment, the investigation is continuing. The police have found two fingerprints
and they have also spoken to some witnesses to / in order to get additional information.
CLOSING
It seems that the robber was wearing a mask so that people could not see his face.
