BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI

K.K. BIRLA GOA CAMPUS

Second Semester, 2023- 24
Course: INSTR F343 (Industrial Instrumentation and Control)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Comprehensive Exam (Regular) [Closed Book] Date: 16.05.2024
Marks:80 Duration: 3 Hours
Note: 1. All questions are compulsory. 2. Make assumptions wherever necessary and justify.

Q.1 The block diagram of a closed-loop control system is shown in figure below, where G c Gf, Gp, Gm, and Gd
are the transfer functions of the controller, the final control element, the process, the measuring device and the
disturbance. (a) For a servo problem, i.e. d(s)=0, derive the transfer function between the output and the
setpoint. (b) For a first order process with respect to a unit step change in setpoint, prove that proportional
control only is not able to eliminate the offset, and that the offset reduces with increased proportional gain.
assume Gf = Gm= 1. The transfer function of proportional controller is Gc =Kc and (c) For a first order process
under integral control that is subjected to a unit step change in setpoint, prove that: (i) the dynamic response of
the output shows second order process behavior, and (ii) integral control only can eliminate the offset. Assume
Gf=Gm=1. The transfer function for the integral controller is: 𝐺 = 𝐾 . Take 𝐺 = . [15]

Q.2 Furnace is used to heat up a cold process stream as shown in figure below. The required heat is maintained
by combustion of fuel gas. Using cascade control system, exit temperature of process stream and also flow rate
of fuel gas are to be controlled.
(a) According to given process, what are the primary and secondary variables? (b) In a single loop system, the
outlet temperature is measured and temperature controller sends its signal to the regulating valve. Why do we
need cascade control system instead of a single loop system? (c) Draw the block diagram of the control system.
(d) The transfer function between temperature of process stream and flow rate of fuel gas is given by
.
𝐺 = and the transfer function of the control valve 𝐺 = ,(Gmp=Gms=1). If primary and
( )( ) ( . )( )
secondary controllers are both proportional only i.e Kcp and Kcs, determine their gain values by selecting a
closed loop damping coefficient of the secondary loop of 0.707. [15]
Q.3 (a) Consider the following control diagram for a heat exchanger shown in figure below.
(i) Should the control valve be fail-open or fail-closed? Justify your answer.
(ii) Identify the controlled, manipulated and disturbance variables . [5]

(b) A type-K thermocouple (TC) with a 0°C reference is used to control temperature between 150°C and 300°C.
Design a proportional-integral controller with a 30% band and 0.08 min reset (integral) time. The final control
element requires a 0–10 V range. A type-K TC produces a voltage of 6.13 mV at 150°C and 12.21 mV at 300°C.
An amplifier with a gain of 100 will convert these to 0.613 and 1.221, respectively. Take C=1µF [8]

(c) Figure below shows the P&ID for a process wherein materials A and B react in a chamber to create product
C. The reaction generates heat and pressure within the chamber. Provide a description of each element in the
diagram and the signals that connect the element. Describe the nature of the control loops shown. [10]

Q.4(a) Using Boolean algebra first simplify given logic circuit then convert it to ladder logic diagram. [5]
Q.4 (b) Draw a sequential function chart to describe a program involving sequential control of pneumatic valves
and cylinders, consider the situation in which we have two cylinders A and B with the required piston sequence
A+, A−, A+, B+ and then simultaneously A− and B−. [10]

Q.5 (a) The input membership function of error and error-dot for temperature control are shown in figures below.
Find out he crisp output using Root Sum Square (RSS) defuzzification method when error is +0.50° F
and error-dot is +2.5°F/min. [5]

(b) Explain Hebbian and competitive learning rules of artificial neural network. [4]

(c) Discuss the advantages of DCS system. [3]
