A famous building-Three Hierarchs Church
The monastery of the Three Hierarchs is considered to be the most beautiful foundation of
the former moldavian ruler Vasile Lupu and, at the same time, an architectonic jewel in the city
of Iasi, often called the “spiritual capital of Romania”. The church was built during the 17 th
century and its value of mondial singularity is given by the external decoration, an embroidery
of rocks.
When I firstly came in Iasi as a young student, and visited the Three Hierarchs church, being
passioned by history ,I knew that I will find the graves of the ruler Vasile Lupu, but I was
surprised to hear that in the southern side rest the greatest illuminist personality and ruler
Dimitrie Cantemir, who wrote for the humanity the first History of The Otman Empire, and near
his tomb , rest Alexandru Ioan Cuza ,the founder of modern Romania.
Moreover this historical signification is doubled by a strong religious importance, because
here were for the first time deposited the relics of Saint Parascheva, having as day of
celebration the 14th of October, nowadays exposed in the Metropolitan Cathedral.
Also the printing house established at Three Hierarchs is considered to be the first in Moldova.
The printing press, issued the first book written in Romanian language “Cartea romaneasca de
invatatura” and also other reference books for the Romanian culture.
As I will perform my summer practice in Greece, I was surprised to read that in 1821, from
the courtyard of the Monastery Three Hierarchs, was given the signal for the liberation of
Greece, through the voice of Alexandru Ipsilanti in his fight for the liberation of the Balkan
nations.
In 1997, in the monastery’s churchyard was unveiled the bust of Mihai Eminescu, who had
lived here for a while.
Together with other historical buildings from Iasi, the Three Hierarchs Church, confirms the
major importance of a city which houses the oldest monument in Romania, the first jewish
theatre in the world and many others symbolic monuments for Romanian and universal culture.
