Electric Charge and Field (1)
Electric Charge and Field (1)
20. A thin metallic spherical of radius R carries a charge Q on its surface. A point charge
Q/2 is placed at its centre C and another charge + 2Q is placed outside the shell at a
distance X from the centre as shown in figure. Find force on the charge at the centre of
the shell and at the point A , also find the electric flux through the shell.
21. Two long charged plane sheets of charge density σ & -2σ are arranged vertically, with
a separation of D between them, deduce the expression for the electric field at points
to the left of the first sheet, to the right of second sheet and between the two sheets.
22. Use Gauss theorem to find the electric field due to a uniformly charged infinitely large
plain sheet with surface charge density σ. What is the direction of field for positive
and negative charge densities?
LONG QUESTIONS
1. (a) Use Gauss theorem to find the electric field due to a straight uniformly charged infinite
line of charge density λ C/m. Draw a graph to show the variation of electric field E with
perpendicular distance r from the line of charge. (b) An electron is revolving in a circle
with a constant speed V around a long positively charged straight wire passing through
the centre of the circular path and is perpendicular to the plane of the circle. Find the
kinetic energy of the electron in terms of magnitude of its charge and linear charge density
λ of the wire. Show variation of K.E with λ.
2. Using Gauss law deduce the expression for the electric field due to a uniformly charged
spherical conducting shell of radius R at a point outside and inside the shell . Plot a graph
showing variation of electric field as a function of r , r being the distance from the centre
of the shell ( for r >R & r<R )
3. Define electric dipole moment . Write its SI unit .Derive an expression for the electric field
E due to a dipole of length 2a at a point distant r from the centre of the dipole on the (a)
axial line and (b) equatorial line of the dipole. Hence show the variation of E with r .
