INTRODUCTION
The 2024–2025 Grade 11 Physical Education & Sports CSEC class was given the task of hosting
a physical education and sports class project on the 21st November,2024. The students decided
on hosting 2 5-A-Side small goal football tournament for both boys and girls. The players will be
selected from the form 10s and 9s from the 4 houses Imataka, Kunuku, Acari and Pakarima, each
student choose a role from the syllabus to execute during the course of the tournament
Football also called soccer is a game involving two teams of 11 players who try to move the ball
into the other team's goal without using their hands or arms (except the goalkeeper). The team
who scores the most goals win. Football is the most widely played and watched sport in the
world, governed by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). While
modern-day football did originate in England during the 19th century, the rules were formally
made in 1863 with the creation of the Football Association (FA) in England due to different
disagreements on playing styles. The FA separated "association football," which prohibited the
use of hands, from rugby football, creating the foundation of modern soccer. By 1904, the
formation of Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) provided a global
governing body, which began organizing international competitions and standardized the rules.
Football’s global appeal grew throughout the 20th century, leading to its status as the world’s
most popular sport, with tournaments like the FIFA World Cup becoming major international
events. Also, not only did the British help spread the game globally during colonization making
the game played in South America, Africa, Europe and Asia by the 20th century but also early
resemblances of the game were played in different countries, these included Harpastum in
Ancient Rome or Cuju in Ancient China.
Small Goal Football (also known as 5-a-side football or mini football) is a scaled-down version
of modern-day football, played on smaller pitches with fewer players and goals. It typically
features teams of five, and shorter matches along with no offside rule, emphasizing fast-paced
gameplay, technical skill, and close ball control. Matches are played on indoor or outdoor fields
with smaller goals (around 3m wide) and often include rolling substitutions. Popular worldwide,
especially in urban areas, small goal football is great for recreation, fitness, and skill
development, with dedicated leagues and tournaments like the FIFA Futsal World Cup. The first
small goal tournament was held nationally over a number of years in the past and it was hosted
and sponsored by Banks DIH Ltd and that was the Guiness In The Streets Small Goal
Tournament and had blossomed in the Caribbean as a Caribbean tournament. The first of such
tournament was held in Guyana in 2008. Some past winners were Tiger Bay and Back Circle

The small goal football competition was modified from the FIFA Futsal Tournament and is a
very popular sport in Guyana.
The inaugural Guinness Caribbean Street Football challenge opened Thursday evening at the
National Park tarmac. Five regional teams, Antigua/Barbuda, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the
Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and host Guyana are competing in the five-a-side tournament.
The feature address was delivered by Mr. Alfred King, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of
Culture, Youth and Sport who represented Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony. Other speakers
included President of the Guyana Football Federation Mr. Franklyn Wilson, Mr. Carlton Joao,
Sales and Marketing Executive of Banks DIH Limited and Mr. Gareth Geddes, Guinness
Regional Manager.
Trinidad and Tobago’s football captain Mr. Kenwayne Jones who plays for English Premier
League Club Stoke City is the Guinness Street Football Challenge Ambassador. Jones arrived in
Guyana Thursday evening for the tournament. The winning team will secure a first prize of
US$4000 and a complete Futsal hard court in their community. The runner up will take home
US$2,000, while US$1,500 and US$1,000 will be awarded to the third and fourth placed teams.
