to uniquely express the specific components of the test in a way that clarifies their importance and relevance.
Choosing the Structure Method
The overall structure of the deliverable can be organized around phases, types of information, or affected areas. The best
approach is typically based on what was planned and the breadth and depth of the test. For instance, if only email-based social
engineering was conducted against the helpdesk, structuring the document by phases might not add value. Instead, organizing
the report around the data collected, vulnerabilities found, their ranking, recommendations, and final analysis within that single
phase is more practical and useful.
Handling Complexity in Multi-Phase Tests
When the assessment involves multiple phases targeting different areas such as applications, networks, or departments, the
complexity increases significantly. Different divisions of the company might have been tested using various methodologies,
which can lead to confusion if the structure isn’t consistent. Selecting a clear structure and sticking with it throughout the
document is critical for clarity.
Using Threads as a Common Denominator
When uncertain about structure, the best practice is to use “threads” as a unifying theme. Threads are sequences of related
events, vulnerabilities, measured impacts, relevant data collected, and any limitations that influenced outcomes. Building the
report around these threads allows the information to be presented in various ways that can cater to different audiences, for
example focusing on applications within the marketing department or other areas.
Analysis Section and Risk Breakdown
Once the data structure is finalized, the analysis section can be created. This section often uses a risk-based format, categorizing
risks into high, medium, and low. This format is widely accepted and facilitates prioritizing remediation during the integration
phase. The company can focus first on high and medium risks before addressing lower-level risks. Risk details can include
whether risks are control, detection, or inherent types and their criticality (critical, medium, or informational).
Recommendations: Balancing Quantity and Relevance
Recommendations should be grounded in the company’s current IT security policies, industry best practices, standards, and
regulatory requirements. However, recommendations often suffer from being either too few, too many, or absent altogether. Too
many recommendations overwhelm the recipients, diluting the impact of the engagement and reducing perceived value.
Conversely, too few or no recommendations fail to provide actionable guidance. Recommendations must strike a balance
between being comprehensive and manageable.
Presenting the Deliverable to the Company
After finalizing the deliverable, the penetration testing team presents the report to the company, particularly to the individuals
responsible for commissioning the test. This presentation walks through each test phase, ensuring clarity and helping
management understand how to proceed post-engagement. Because the deliverable can be large and complex, a condensed
presentation is typically more effective for both those managing the test and upper management impacted by it.
Structuring Recommendations by Risk Level
To aid clarity, recommendations are typically categorized into three groups aligned with risk severity: remedial, tactical, and
strategic. This approach summarizes the risks—high, medium, and low—and aligns them with the framework phases or data
threads. Presenting recommendations in this consolidated and structured manner improves comprehension and helps prioritize
actions effectively.
Aligning Findings,
Not all vulnerabilities need to be fixed right away. Some may seem serious but don’t matter much in a specific business setup.
Tools like ISS and Qualys scan for issues, but their results often don’t match each other or the real risks a company faces.
Just relying on scan reports without understanding the business can lead to poor decisions. Real value comes from ethical
hacking that includes human judgment and considers the company’s goals, risks, and setup.

needs. Sometimes business factors matter more.
In short, security testing should match the company’s environment—not just list technical problems.

on standard systems. For example, a buffer overflow on a popular web server could result in total system compromise and be
labeled as high severity.
However, severity is contextual:
Mitigations (e.g., proxies, SSL) may reduce risk.
Ease of exploitation and scope of impact (e.g., affecting many servers) also matter.
Tools and platforms (like ISAC, BUGTRAQ) try to standardize severity, but no universal standard exists. The final
interpretation depends on a company’s unique environment.
Exposure
Exposure measures how accessible a vulnerable system is. A system exposed to the Internet has maximum exposure, while
one on an isolated internal network has minimal exposure.
Exposure includes:
Network and physical access
Logical access (e.g., authentication)
Trust relationships, such as third-party or partner networks
Tools like Lumeta reveal hidden exposures by mapping network connections. Trust-based access increases risk if those trusted
networks are themselves exposed. Ultimately, exposure translates into trust and risk, and violations often result in losses that
are difficult to recover, such as data breaches or brand damage.
BUSINESS MEASUREMENT
Once severity and exposure are evaluated, business decisions determine the remediation strategy. This involves aligning
vulnerabilities with core business goals, asset value, and perceived risk.

Security investments are often treated like insurance, with skepticism unless they show a clear ROI. Companies are more
willing to spend when:

process is difficult because the ethical hackers might not be fully aware of all the intricacies and operations within the
organization. Therefore, the most effective tests end with an additional assessment to uncover hidden or unknown elements in
the system, helping form more complete and relevant recommendations.

Organizations adopt different approaches after receiving the ethical hacking report. Some continue working with the same firm

There is a common misconception that using the ethical hacking company for remediation creates a conflict of interest. Due to
this belief, many companies restrict the original testers from being involved in the fixes. However, this often removes the
chance to benefit from the testers’ unique perspective, which can be valuable for understanding the issues more deeply and
planning effective solutions.

The integration of ethical hacking results into an organization’s security framework occurs in four major phases. These phases

architecture to identify weaknesses caused by poor development or configuration practices. Defense planning also includes
process reviews, especially of how the team responded to incidents during the test. Successful practices by the Blue Team (the
defenders) can be standardized, while weaknesses can be addressed. Another key element is security awareness training—
ensuring that all involved personnel, especially the IT department, understand the changes and their role in maintaining
improved security standards.
3. Incident Management: Strengthening Response Capabilities
The third phase focuses on evaluating and enhancing incident response capabilities. During the test, the Blue Team might have
