UNIT – 1

I. Information Security Models:


Defense-in-depth is a security strategy that uses multiple, complementary layers of protection across systems, networks, and
applications. The idea is to ensure that if one security measure fails, others are in place to detect or prevent an attack. A classic
example is a bank's security: guards, safes, alarms, cameras, and locked doors. If one fails, another picks up the slack—like an
alarm catching what a subdued guard misses. The key is to use different but complementary controls. Duplicate tools, like two
firewalls from different vendors, may offer diversity but are still performing the same function and thus add redundancy more
than depth. In penetration testing, this layered approach helps identify vulnerabilities at various levels. By mapping these layers,
testers and defenders can better understand how to secure systems and explain hacking within a structured security framework.
Security architecture adds another layer of classification, helping organizations secure everything from the perimeter to internal
resources. Together, they form the basis for a value-driven penetration test.
The defense-in-depth model is defined in four layers:
1. Computer security, 2. Network security, 3. Service security, 4. Application security

Computer Security Simplified


Computer security covers areas like access control, user account management, software and database security, and change
control. Much of this security is handled by the operating system, which acts as a bridge between hardware, software, and users.
Popular operating systems include Microsoft Windows and various UNIX-based systems like Linux, BSD, Solaris, and AIX. In
the past, computers were centralized with simple security—users accessed a main system through basic terminals. With no local
drives, threats like viruses were minimal. Access was tightly managed, often through Mandatory Access Control (MAC),
ensuring users only saw or used what they were authorized to, maintaining strong system integrity.
Evolution of Computer Security
As personal computers became affordable and widespread, users gained full control over them. Businesses quickly adopted
them to boost productivity, especially with applications like Lotus 1-2-3, the first major spreadsheet software that revolutionized
financial computations. During this time, thousands of standalone computers operated with little attention to security. As
networking and connectivity increased, sensitive data began to be shared widely. Discretionary Access Control (DAC) was
introduced, allowing users to control access to their files—e.g., Alice could decide who accessed her data.
Bell-LaPadula Model & OS Security
The Bell-LaPadula model is a well-known security model defining subjects, objects, and access rules based on security levels.
It enforces two main rules:
 "No read up" – you can’t read data above your security level.
 "No write down" – you can’t write data to a lower level, preventing leaks.
Though costly to implement fully, its core principles still influence modern system design, especially in controlling
unauthorized data flow.
Operating system security starts with the kernel, the core code managing all system functions. Early kernels (like UNIX) were
small and secure, delegating non-core functions to external libraries. Over time, systems like Windows began embedding more
functions into the kernel for speed and ease, making it massive and complex (e.g., Windows NT has over 4 million lines of
code). This complexity increases vulnerability, as a single flaw can compromise the whole system.
To improve isolation, Trusted Operating Systems (TOS) were introduced, segmenting the system into security
compartments. These logical boundaries restrict access based on levels, limiting the damage if a service is exploited. Despite
their effectiveness, TOS have not seen widespread adoption.
Overall, as systems evolved, perimeter defenses like firewalls and filtering routers became crucial, supplementing internal OS
security.
Hardening a System: Physical Security
Physically securing a system is the first step in system hardening. Direct access to hardware can allow attackers to shut it
down, install malware, or bypass protections.
Common Physical Security Practices:
 Lock cases on public-facing machines.
 Store critical systems in locked, controlled-access cabinets or rooms.
 Avoid or disable removable media devices (CD drives, USB, etc.).
 Disable external ports (USB, COM, keyboard) if not needed.
 Set a BIOS password to prevent unauthorized system changes.
 Lock or disable the power switch to prevent unauthorized shutdowns.
 Secure and provide redundant power sources to avoid simple unplug attacks.
 Maintain proper environmental controls (e.g., raised floors, cooling).
 Strictly limit and monitor access to server rooms or sensitive areas.
System Hardening: Installing the Operating System
When installing an OS, security begins with the setup. The system's intended role (e.g., web server, internal tool) shapes its
configuration.
Best Practices During Installation:
 Use company-approved system images or configurations specific to the system's role.
 Perform a clean OS install—avoid upgrading existing systems to prevent inheriting vulnerabilities or poor
configurations.
 Choose a secure file system (e.g., avoid FAT; prefer NTFS, ext4, etc.).
 Avoid default service installations; only enable services as needed to minimize exposure.
 Enable only necessary interfaces required for installation or initial configuration.
Set System Policies
Once the OS and services are operational, administrative policies must be enforced to maintain control and integrity.
Key Administrative Configurations:
 Password Policies: Define rules for password strength, expiration, and reuse for all accounts.
 Enable System Auditing: Start logging system events and user activities to track changes and support troubleshooting
or incident response.
 Set Directory/File Permissions: Create a structured directory system and assign proper access rights to prevent
unauthorized access or modifications.
Secure Remote Access
When the system is accessible over a network, tightly control how it's accessed to reduce exposure.
Network Hardening Tasks:
 Implement Access Control Lists (ACLs): Restrict traffic to only necessary protocols and ports.
 Tweak Protocol Stack Settings: For example, limit the number of simultaneous connections or reduce timeout for
incomplete handshakes.
 Configure Remote Access Restrictions: Decide whether to allow or deny remote login, SSH, or remote procedure calls
(RPCs) based on system role.
Apply Patches
Before installing any applications, it's critical to update the system with the latest patches.
Types of Patches:
1. Functionality Patches: Improve system behavior (e.g., memory, networking).
2. Feature Patches: Add new capabilities or enhancements.
3. Security Patches: Fix vulnerabilities and prevent exploitation.
Network Security (Expanded Concise Version)
Network security focuses on protecting data and systems as they communicate over networks, especially from remote threats.
Unlike securing a standalone system, securing a network involves defending multiple connected devices from external and
internal attacks.
When data is sent across a network, it is broken into packets—each containing the message and a header with source and
destination details. These packets are routed through devices (routers, switches) using routing protocols until they reach the
intended recipient. Attackers can intercept, modify, or reroute these packets if security measures are weak.
Key components of network security include:
 Transmission Security: Ensures data is encrypted or protected while moving across the network to prevent
eavesdropping or tampering.
 Protocol Security: Secures how data is formatted and transferred, preventing exploitation through flawed or misused
protocols.
 Routing Protocol Security: Protects how routers share and update routing information, preventing malicious rerouting
or data redirection.
 Network Access Security: Manages who or what can access the network, using tools like firewalls, VPNs, and access
control lists to limit exposure.
Service Security (Simplified Version)
Services are background processes that provide functionality either to users/applications (operational services) or to support
communication over networks (network services).
Types of Services
1. Operational Services – Support internal system functions for users and software.
2. Network Services – Enable communication between systems over a network.

Examples of Operational Services (Windows)


 Security Accounts Manager (SAM): Stores and manages local user credentials.
 Plug and Play: Automatically detects and configures hardware changes.

 Net Logon: Handles login authentication for domain users.

 Event Log: Records system and application events for monitoring.

 Logical Disk Manager: Manages disk drives and volumes during setup.

 Indexing Service: Speeds up file searches by indexing file content.


Examples of Network Services
 DNS (Domain Name System): Resolves domain names into IP addresses.
 Telnet: Allows remote command-line access to the system.
 FTP (File Transfer Protocol): Enables file transfers over a network.
Security Best Practices
 Disable unused services to reduce vulnerabilities.
 Monitor running services to detect suspicious or unauthorized activity.
 Apply updates and patches to fix service-level vulnerabilities.
Application Security
Applications consist of libraries, executables, and utilities that perform tasks but may contain vulnerabilities exploitable by
hackers. These weaknesses often arise from software bugs that can disrupt operations or provide unauthorized system access.
Key Points:
 Applications can be entry points for attacks, especially if bugs allow code injection or data leaks.
 Bugs consume much of security professionals’ time, as thousands are discovered daily and require assessment and
patching.
 Examples of common vulnerabilities include:
o Buffer overruns: Malicious data injected into memory fields, enabling code execution.
o Script execution via cookies: e.g., Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0 allowed running scripts embedded in cookies due to
flawed security zone handling.
o Denial of Service (DoS): Snort 1.8.3 vulnerable to crashes caused by malformed ICMP packets.
o Remote code execution: Found in RealPlayer 8.0 and earlier.
o Address book spoofing: Outlook 8.5’s auto-address book feature can be exploited.
o Privilege escalation: Microsoft Exchange Server 2000’s “Everyone” group had risky registry access.
o File reading exploits: IE versions 5.01, 5.5, and 6.0 allowed remote file access bypassing security.
o Domain admin takeover: Windows NT/2000 trusted domain SID verification flaws.
Best Practices for Secure Application Development:
 Define clear coding standards and requirements.
 Conduct code reviews to identify vulnerabilities such as:
o Buffer overflows , Race conditions, Input validation flaws, Format string issues, Poor cryptography, Trust
management problems, Use of insecure third-party packages, Proper logging and auditing
II. Security Architecture
Businesses must adopt comprehensive security architectures that align with their evolving technology needs and business
objectives. Security architecture serves as a guiding framework when introducing new technologies, ensuring security integrates
seamlessly with business goals.
 Modern businesses rely heavily on Internet integration for partner access, remote users, supply-chain management, and
customer services.
 Physical boundaries alone no longer suffice for protection due to complex, dynamic business relationships.

 Increasing regulation and multi-platform access demand flexible, layered security solutions.
Four Key Layers of Security Architecture:
1. Resource Layer- Hosts services and data — servers, applications, databases, workstations, and storage.
2. Control Layer- Manages identity, access, and policy enforcement; translates policy into technical controls and
authorization.

3. Perimeter Layer-Creates logical boundaries between external and internal networks (firewalls, gateways).

4. Extended Layer-Covers external-facing aspects such as remote access, e-commerce, and third-party integrations.
Key Challenges & Considerations:
 Businesses need agility to adapt to mergers, acquisitions, and rapid changes.
 Security must be flexible, not rigid — enabling seamless interaction between users, resources, and external systems.
 Security layers should be loosely coupled to maintain flexibility and reduce redundancy.

 Many organizations lack a unified architecture, focusing on isolated controls like firewalls (perimeter) or OS security
(resource) but missing robust control layers that integrate the whole system.

 Without a strong control layer, gaps emerge between perimeter and resource security, creating vulnerabilities.
Resource Layer Overview
Definition: The resource layer consists of the core technical assets that organizations rely on to operate and generate revenue.
This includes systems, applications, internal users, databases, services, printers, LANs, operating systems, and data.
Importance: These resources are what organizations must protect and control access to, as they are critical to business
operations. However, not all resources require the same security level—some information loss might be minor, while others
could be catastrophic if compromised.
Challenges:
o Identifying and valuing resources is complex, especially in large organizations with diverse business units.
o Understanding resource value is essential for effective security management and penetration testing.
o Without knowing the value of resources, it's impossible to prioritize vulnerabilities or justify investments in fixing security
issues.
Control Layer Overview
Purpose: The control layer manages identification, authentication, and authorization for access to resources. Ideally, it would be
centralized in a single system, but in reality, it’s often fragmented.
Current Reality: Due to legacy systems, diverse applications, and varying security approaches, the control layer consists of
many different products from multiple vendors.
o Centralized management is rare, leading to a fragmented security landscape with multiple authentication systems.
Challenges: Managing and integrating identity and access control across heterogeneous systems is difficult but critical for
security. Many organizations are focusing efforts here to unify control in distributed environments.
Security Testing Impact: Penetration testers often encounter the control layer during assessments.
o Skilled testers may bypass control mechanisms by exploiting alternative vulnerabilities (e.g., direct brute force attacks
on devices, or obtaining credentials from exposed systems).
o For example, exposed ports on a Windows NT system might allow extraction of the Security Account Manager (SAM)
database, which attackers can crack offline to gain unauthorized access.
Perimeter Layer Overview
 Definition: The perimeter marks the boundary between your network and external networks (such as the Internet). It
can also separate different internal business units or system types with distinct security needs.
o Core Components: Firewalls: The fundamental element of perimeter security, acting as the first line of defense.
o Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS): Additional layers that monitor and
respond to suspicious activity at the network edge.
 Importance and Limitations:
o The perimeter is often the most visible security layer.
o Despite its importance, many organizations mistakenly rely solely on perimeter defenses, which is a flawed approach.
o The perimeter is just one layer in a multi-layered security strategy.
 Security Challenges:
o Early firewall bypass techniques like "firewalking" demonstrated the vulnerabilities of perimeter defenses.
o Attackers continue to develop sophisticated methods to evade firewalls and IDS, increasing the complexity of defending
the perimeter.
 Role in Penetration Testing:
o Penetration tests help assess the effectiveness of perimeter defenses by simulating attacks and identifying vulnerabilities.
o Tests provide valuable feedback for tuning IDS/IPS sensitivity to reduce false alarms without compromising security.
o Penetration testers often need to know about IDS presence to realistically test defenses, but there can be strategic reasons
to withhold this information.
Extended Layer Overview
 The extended layer refers to how corporate security extends beyond the internal network perimeter into external
environments such as the Internet, partner networks, and remote users.
Examples:
o Customers accessing secure websites with defined security policies.
o Remote users connecting via VPNs or dial-up.

o Communications through email, PDAs, wireless devices (e.g., smartphones, Blackberries).

o Extranets for partners and business collaborators.


Security Concerns:
o While VPNs secure data in transit, the security of assets at termination points outside the corporate perimeter (like laptops
or mobile devices) is often weaker and vulnerable.
o Data accessed on external devices may be at significant risk compared to the tightly controlled internal environment.
Challenges in Partner and Customer Networks:
o Different partners have varying access requirements, security policies, Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and legal
obligations.
o This diversity can cause complex security management issues and “security mayhem.”
o The boundaries between customer and partner networks can be unclear, increasing the risk of unintentional access outside
the authorized scope during penetration tests.
Penetration Testing Implications:
o Including partner or external networks in a penetration test requires careful agreements to avoid legal or operational fallout.
o Testers must understand and respect these boundaries, but attackers do not, making extended networks attractive attack
vectors.
Information Security Program
Purpose: Managing the complexities of information security can overwhelm organizations. A formal security program provides
a structured foundation and clear guidance on how security is implemented across the company.
Impact of Having or Lacking a Program:
o Organizations without a security program often suffer from poor overall security and reactive, tactical security efforts.
o Organizations with a security program have defined expectations, processes, and documentation that help maintain
consistent security practices.
Role in Ethical Hacking (Penetration Testing): A defined security program is crucial for ensuring that penetration tests align
with the organization’s business needs and that test results can be effectively integrated into the security strategy.
Risk Management:
o An information security program implements a repeatable and sustainable process for managing overall business risk, not
limited to just information security risks.
o Risk tolerance varies by industry and organization (e.g., banks vs. retail stores).
Scope of Information Security Programs
Core Goal: Preserve the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of an organization’s information assets. Information must
be treated as a valuable asset regardless of its form.
Big Picture Risk Analysis: The security program requires a multidisciplinary, broad view of risk beyond just networks and
hosts.
Common Misconception: Many organizations mistakenly think network- and host-based security are enough. These are just
subsets of the full information security program.
Comprehensive Coverage: A full program must also address:
Physical security, including physical access controls and media handling (e.g., protecting printouts, storage devices). Example:
Even with strong network security, weak physical controls (like unsecured trash) can leak sensitive data via dumpster diving.
Personnel Considerations:
o Education, experience, and background checks alone do not guarantee security.
o The roles employees play regarding information use and access must be clearly defined and linked to security
responsibilities.
o Role-based security helps assign clear responsibilities and tailor security awareness training.
o Employees unaware of their security role or threats become a weak link vulnerable to social engineering.
Security is Not Just Technical:
o It is a multifaceted challenge involving people, processes, and technology.
o Ethical hacking tests how well each layer of security protects assets by attempting exploitation.
Layered Security Concept:
o Information security is applied in layers as information is created, transmitted, and stored.
o The program ensures no significant gaps exist between these layers, maintaining continuity of protection.

III. THE PROCESS OF INFORMATION SECURITY


Identify Risk
Identification of risk involves identification of assets, threats, and vulnerabilities. Assets may be tangible, such as
hardware, or intangible, such as goodwill. Threats are events that offer potential harm to an asset. Vulnerabilities are inherent
weaknesses that may allow a threat to occur. Risk is associated with each combination of threats and vulnerabilities. Threats
may be realized by multiple vulnerabilities, and vulnerabilities may be the basis for multiple threats, resulting in multiple risks
with varying probability and harm. Identification of risk is the first step in information security.
Ethical hacking is a tool to reveal vulnerabilities that threaten assets. The tester acts as a threat to expose vulnerabilities
that could compromise assets, such as credit card numbers. This helps create a foundation for employing security across the
organization. Without clear planning and defined scope for threats, assets, and vulnerabilities, the test's usefulness is limited.
Threat assignment relates to the type of attack or hacker mindset. Assets include data, services, and applications that impact
business success. Vulnerability scope defines what is considered a vulnerability and affects test planning. For example, an
employee’s incorrect answer may or may not be a vulnerability depending on its impact. Traditionally, vulnerabilities are
technical, but defining scope may raise unexpected issues. Empirical data from exploiting vulnerabilities provides greater detail
and accuracy in risk analysis and helps guide effective control implementation within the security program.
Risk Analysis Process (Reduced)
Risk is the chance that a threat exploits a vulnerability, causing harm. Risk analysis ensures security measures are cost-
effective and aligned with business priorities. It helps prioritize threats and determine resource allocation. By identifying asset
value and threat exposure, organizations can decide how much to invest in protection. Penetration tests help reveal
vulnerabilities, but their value depends on understanding the asset's importance. Risk analysis results in two key outcomes:
identifying risks and justifying security investments. It guides decisions on how much risk an organization can afford, such as
when deploying new systems like web servers. The process supports better hardware/software design, ensures regular updates,
and focuses security efforts on high-risk areas. It starts with identifying core business functions and mapping technology assets
to assess data value and interdependencies.
Quantify Risk (Reduced)
Identifying risks is only useful when they are quantified to enable prioritization. This prioritization forms the basis of a risk
mitigation strategy, guiding investments in security technologies, training, or consulting. Risk with the greatest impact is
addressed first, acknowledging that protecting information requires funding.
The quantification approach should suit the organization. For example, E-commerce firms may prefer dollar-based risk
metrics, while non-commercial organizations might use relative rankings like high, medium, or low.
Two main risk assessment methods:
 Quantitative: Focuses on measurable loss (e.g., financial). Uses formulas like Annualized Loss Expectancy (ALE) =
Loss × Annualized Rate of Occurrence (ARO).
 Qualitative: Uses subjective factors like Exposure Factor (EF) and risk likelihood, common in firms with high market
value relative to physical assets.
A major IT risk is misalignment between tech systems and business goals. Enterprises should build adaptable frameworks
that align tech decisions with business needs, documenting assumptions and adjusting as needed over time.
Inherent Risk (Reduced)
Inherent risks arise from the combination of unrelated faults in networks, applications, services, or systems, leading to serious
vulnerabilities. Security is achieved through layered protections, but these layers may not ensure end-to-end coverage.
There are two types of controls:
 Pervasive controls: Broadly implemented across the enterprise and should be evaluated at an organizational level.
 Detailed controls: Specific to individual systems and managed by their respective resources.
Control Risk (Reduced)
Control risk refers to the likelihood that a weakness exists within an enterprise that could cause harm or loss. It often stems from
ineffective internal controls. If such controls are not properly designed, tested, and functioning, the control risk remains high.
For example, manual log reviews are error-prone and increase risk, whereas automated log processing reduces it.
Detection Risk (Reduced)
Detection risk is the inability to detect security breaches or attacks, often due to poor monitoring or misconfigured
technology. This risk is typically high in systems lacking effective detection mechanisms.
Handling Risk
After evaluating total and residual risk, an enterprise must mitigate it using one of four methods:
 Transference: Transfer risk through insurance or outsourcing, where contracts and SLAs assign responsibility for
losses to another party.
 Denial: Ignoring or rejecting risk, which is dangerous but common, often due to financial constraints.
 Reduction: Implementing countermeasures to lower risk, usually by investing in better technology or business changes.
For example, using paid antivirus software instead of freeware to better protect against viruses.
 Acceptance: Acknowledging and accepting the risk when the cost of mitigation exceeds the potential loss, often
because the risk is small compared to other accepted risks.
Risk Reduction
Companies often apply recommended countermeasures to reduce risk, but exposure may remain. Commonly, they modify
existing technology or make low-cost business changes. For example, relying on free antivirus software can pose risks, while
paid industry solutions like Symantec or McAfee provide better protection and timely updates.
Risk Acceptance
Enterprises may accept risk when the likelihood of exploitation is low or when mitigation costs outweigh potential losses.
Accepting risk is common in business, often involving smaller risks within a portfolio of greater accepted risks. For example, a
financial executive might accept a $500,000 technical risk as insignificant compared to other daily risks.
Addressing Risk
Prioritized risks help decision-makers choose to accept, transfer, or mitigate risks. Acceptance is suitable for low-probability or
low-cost risks or when mitigation costs exceed asset value. Transference involves shifting risk to another party, like insurers,
who spread risk across many clients. Mitigation involves controls to reduce risk metrics like probability, harm, or cost (e.g.,
access controls, encryption, backups).
Mitigating Risk
Risk mitigation starts at the organizational level with a high-level strategy aligned to business goals. This guides the creation of
subordinate controls—standards, procedures, configurations, and devices—often layered. Effective controls require ongoing
management to maintain relevance and effectiveness.
IV. COMPONENT PARTS OF INFORMATION SECURITY PROGRAMS
Risk Assessment
 Purpose: Identify and quantify information security risks to guide risk handling.
 Scope Definition: Establish security domain boundaries (physical, logical) and list assets at risk, aligning with the
security architecture model (extended, perimeter, control, resource layers).
 Modularity: Defines the scope for other security program parts, like incident response, enabling continuous feedback
and improvement.
 Living Document: Requires ongoing ownership and review, serving as a key part of due diligence. Its value depends
on accuracy and thoroughness.
Information Security Management System (ISMS)
 Function: Manage risk through acceptance, transfer, or mitigation.
 Standards: Growing adoption of international standards like ISO17799 (successor to BS7799), viewed as similar to
Total Quality Management for security.
 Key Functional Areas in ISO17799:
o Information Security Policy: Management support and direction.
o Organizational Security: Framework to sustain and manage security infrastructure.
o Asset Classification and Control: Protect organizational assets.
o Personnel Security: Manage risks from human factors.

Additional ISO17799 Functional Control Areas


Physical and Environmental Security: Protects the organization’s premises from risks such as unauthorized access, natural
disasters, and environmental hazards.
Communications and Operations Management: Ensures secure, correct, and repeatable operation of organizational assets,
including data handling and system processes.
Access Control: Controls access to assets based on business needs and security policies, ensuring only authorized users gain
entry.
System Development and Maintenance : Guarantees that security controls are incorporated and maintained during the
development and maintenance of information systems.
Business Continuity Management: Prepares the organization to maintain operations or quickly recover in the event of
disruption.
Compliance: Ensures adherence to regulatory, statutory, contractual, and security requirements.
Security Management System (based on ISO17799)
 Takes a holistic approach to managing information security and risk across the organization.
 The ten functional areas act as a high-level checklist for building a comprehensive security program and selecting
controls.
 Defines functional requirements aligned with the security architecture control layer.
 Scope and controls are driven by risk assessment results, often supported by penetration testing.
Key Components of Security Management Systems
Security Organizations
 Assign and manage roles related to security:
o Functional Roles (e.g., Information Security Officers)

Threads in Penetration Testing
A thread is a related sequence of actions aimed at reaching a specific conclusion during an attack. This conclusion could be
successfully exploiting a vulnerability to obtain sensitive data or simply hitting a dead-end where no further progress is possible.
 Example Scenario:
Imagine a network with multiple security layers:
o Outer router and firewall
o Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) hosting servers like Web, E-commerce, DNS
o Inner firewall protecting internal servers like SQL and authentication servers

Groups in Penetration Testing
Groups are collections or combinations of multiple threads working together to achieve a larger or more complex attack goal.
Key Concepts:
1. Threads are Independent, But Can Influence Each Other
o Each thread is a separate attack path.
o However, a thread may leverage information, access, or artifacts (like a Trojan) gained from a previous thread to "branch
off" or bypass security layers more effectively.
o Example:
 Thread 5 gains access to an E-commerce server.
 Thread 2 reaches the inner firewall and reveals its existence and possible entry points.
 Thread 1 then uses a Trojan implanted on the E-commerce server (thanks to Thread 5) combined with knowledge from

Operating Systems,

Windows prioritizes ease of use, which has historically led to weaker default security settings—like Windows XP automatically
joining wireless networks. Newer versions, such as Windows Server 2003, improved security by running risky services under
nonprivileged accounts. Despite frequent patches from Microsoft, many systems remain vulnerable due to patching delays and
compatibility issues. Penetration testers often stop exploiting a vulnerability once a simple patch could fix it and focus on
discovering other weaknesses.
UNIX systems (including Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, and Linux) were designed with security in mind but require more expertise to
manage. Most vulnerabilities in UNIX arise from poor administration, such as leaving unnecessary services enabled after
installation. Attackers exploit these open services with known methods.
In essence, Windows suffers from usability-driven security trade-offs and patching challenges, while UNIX’s main risks come
from misconfiguration. Effective patch management and system hardening are essential to reduce risks on both platforms.
Password Crackers
Password crackers are software programs designed to discover user passwords by decrypting or bypassing password protections.
Common tools like L0phtCrack target Windows SAM-encrypted passwords, but many similar tools exist for various operating
systems and applications. While these tools help administrators recover lost passwords or verify password policy compliance,
they can also be exploited by attackers.
These tools typically try large numbers of password combinations—using word lists, phrases, symbols, and numbers—at high
speeds until the correct password is found. The underlying assumption is that with enough time and permutations, any password
can be cracked. Once a password is discovered, the attacker can impersonate the user and access all permitted data.
A newer attack method involves algorithmic-based cracking, where attackers first compromise a system to extract the password
hashing algorithm, then quickly reverse-engineer passwords.
Although most password cracking tools focus on Windows, all systems are potentially vulnerable. During penetration tests,
these tools assess the strength of an organization’s password policies. A single compromised user password can lead to
downloading password files and eventually full network control if the cracker succeeds in revealing critical credentials.
RootKits,
A rootkit is a collection of software tools—or a single program—that a hacker installs on a system after gaining initial access.
Despite requiring prior access, rootkits are highly dangerous due to their ability to remain hidden and cause significant damage
over time.
Rootkits enable attackers to maintain persistent access, often by installing backdoor daemons running on unusual ports. These
kits usually include components like network sniffers, log cleaners, and Trojan backdoors. By replacing system binaries with
altered versions, rootkits effectively hide their presence from system monitoring and administrators.
In penetration testing, testers may use rootkits to check if installation is possible, how stealthy the rootkit is, and how easily the
attacker can regain control later. Typically, a password cracker might be used first to gain credentials before deploying the
rootkit.
Linux rootkits, starting from early versions in 1996, have evolved into complex threats such as the T0rn rootkit and lion worm.
Detecting rootkits often relies on tools like Tripwire, which monitor file integrity and alert administrators to unauthorized
changes.
Applications
Applications often expose systems to security risks, primarily because either the applications themselves are insecurely
configured or the underlying system lacks proper security. Penetration testing typically focuses on three application types: web,

access from the Internet. Traffic between the web server and database should use proper protocols and be restricted so the web
server cannot be misused as a stepping stone for attacks. Penetration tests check whether the database server is accessible
directly from outside the network, which would be a serious vulnerability.
Wardialing
Background
Before VPNs became common, attackers frequently exploited phone systems and modems for unauthorized remote access to
company networks. Even today, many organizations maintain modems for backup, maintenance, or vendor access, often with
weak or default credentials, which pose significant security risks.
Example Vulnerability
A printing services company’s network-connected printers had modems with hard-coded credentials and provided full IP access,
not just terminal access. Knowing the printer’s phone number gave an attacker full network access through this modem
vulnerability.
Risks of Personal Modems
Employees sometimes install modems on their work computers to remotely access their systems from home. Such setups
(modem + digital line splitter + remote control software like PCAnywhere) can be exploited if discovered by hackers, creating
easy unauthorized access points.
Wardialing Explained
Wardialing is a hacking technique where software, a modem, a phone line, and a list of phone numbers are used to automatically
dial numbers to find modems, fax machines, or other systems connected to phone lines. Once a device answers, the attacker
attempts to exploit it.
Wardialing Best Practices and Considerations
 Randomize Calls: Sequential dialing can trigger alarms on phone systems. Random dialing helps avoid detection.
 After Hours: Wardialing is ideally done overnight to avoid disturbing people and to reduce suspicion.
 Pace Yourself: Rapid dialing of many numbers from one line can raise alerts, so tests are spread over several days.
Wardialing Process
1. Number Scanning: Identify which numbers are answered by computers, modems, fax machines, or are inactive.
2. System Type Scanning: Categorize the identified systems (e.g., fax vs. modem). This allows focus on potentially
exploitable modems.
3. Banner Collection: Capture system banners sent by modems to identify device types and services.
4. Default Access Testing: Check if systems allow access with default or no passwords, common in maintenance
configurations.

Tone Detection and Protocol Negotiation
Wardialing tools detect whether a phone line is connected to a fax machine, modem, or a modem masquerading as a fax. They
may attempt to switch a fax modem to terminal mode to gain access. Once communication is established, attackers can use
protocols like telnet, remote desktop, or terminal emulation (e.g., Citrix, PCAnywhere) to access and control the remote system.

 Example: If the edge router has an enabled modem (detected during wardialing), testers may attempt to gain
unauthorized access through this channel.
Service and Areas of Concern.

2. Interpretive Value: Contextualize results based on the test’s scope and business objectives. The test should expose
real, addressable weaknesses rather than mimic hacker behavior without purpose.
Additionally, the deliverable should:
 Act as a catalyst for improving security: Beyond listing fixes, it should inspire long-term solutions, such as improving
patch management when outdated vulnerabilities are common.
 Be actionable: The format and structure must allow the company to turn insights into security improvements.
 Avoid common pitfalls:
o Poor information: Merely listing vulnerabilities offers no real value.
o Shock factor: Companies often overreact to the depth of penetration without understanding the simple causes
(e.g., poor basic security).
Final Analysis
Throughout the engagement, continuous analysis was performed on system threads and group paths to identify hidden risks and
vulnerabilities. Just like during enumeration—where vulnerabilities are discovered through collected data—this final phase
allows for a broader evaluation of the organization’s overall security posture.
A crucial step is distinguishing between high- and low-risk vulnerabilities. Though often straightforward, this can become
complex without proper asset valuation. For instance, a vulnerability that allows website data changes may seem high-risk, but
its real impact depends on how critical the website is to the business.
Without asset value metrics, assessing risk becomes subjective. If all exposed systems are equally important to operations,
prioritizing vulnerabilities becomes harder. In such cases, the depth of penetration or number of layers compromised helps
determine severity. This adds complexity, as deeper exploits often involve more systems and subtler vulnerabilities.
Example:
Figure 13.1 illustrates this. Systems A, B, and C are close to the Internet (e.g., in the DMZ), and deeper systems like K lie
further inside the network. Two attack threads—A-D-F-J-K and C-E-F-H-J-K—reach system K. System F, initially considered
low-risk, is a key stepping stone in both threads. Even if K’s vulnerability is marked "critical" and F’s as "informational," F
becomes critical in this context because it grants access to K.
Another thread from B to D also connects to F, showing multiple paths to the target. Although many attackers could exploit A
and C, exploiting F requires more advanced skills. Moreover, the attack on K involved social engineering, suggesting internal
threats must also be considered.
While systems A and C seem to pose the greatest risk due to ease of exploitation, system F is more dangerous in practice due to
its position in critical attack paths. Thus, a vulnerability’s real risk is defined not only by its default severity but by its role in the
overall compromise chain.
By mapping attack threads and explaining how vulnerabilities were used, companies can better understand their weak points.
Even if a nonessential system is compromised, it may signal that similar critical systems are also exposed.
The ultimate goal is to match technical vulnerabilities with business risks, enabling informed mitigation plans. Each issue is
categorized by impact, guiding short- and long-term remediation strategies.
Risk Classification
 Critical: High-risk threats requiring immediate action. Often flagged during the test due to their potential for major
disruption.
 Warning: Medium-level risks that must be addressed within a reasonable timeframe to prevent future exploitation.
 Informational: Low-risk findings. Still require attention to prevent them from becoming stepping stones in multi-
layered attacks. Also help demonstrate post-test improvement.
Potential Analysis
At the conclusion of a penetration test, all results are gathered and reviewed collectively to build linked “containers” of
information. These containers represent data collected during different phases of the test (e.g., reconnaissance, enumeration,
exploitation), each containing specific activity areas. For example:
 Reconnaissance might include data from discarded materials or public websites.
 Enumeration might document open ports on UNIX and Windows servers or identified applications.
 Exploitation details the exploits used and associated attack threads and groups.
As shown in Figure 13.2, this combined information—not just individual tasks—is analyzed to assess the overall criticality of
the potential attack. By linking data from different phases, testers can construct a comprehensive narrative for their final report.
Each collected element is assigned a risk level, sometimes based on external advisories like CERT. However, the actual risk
varies depending on the company’s environment and asset value. For example, a vulnerability rated “critical” by CERT may
pose a lower risk if the company’s environment makes exploitation difficult. Conversely, combining different elements along an
attack path can increase risk levels.
Once all data points have assigned risks—often influenced by the tester’s experience—they are combined to evaluate severity
along potential hacker paths. This process is one of the most valuable yet complex parts of the final analysis. Using Figure 13.2
as a guide:
 The "warning" example combines a message board discussion (triangle “a”) with an enumeration result showing open
ports (square “2”).
 An initially unidentified port led to discovering a server exploited via multiple threads forming group G2.
 Two exploit paths (“Ea” and “Eb”) could lead to the same endpoint, illustrating how attacks not linked during testing
can still form viable attack paths after review.
This approach parallels traditional risk analysis used in business. For instance, a hospital’s CEO may classify patient data as
highly sensitive per HIPAA. Business priorities define asset values, controls are implemented with metrics, and risk is
calculated accordingly. Similarly, penetration testing overlays technical tasks and environmental data to estimate realistic risk
levels, even for vulnerabilities not directly tested.
Figure 13.3 relates these phases and attack threads back to network systems. The “warning” vulnerability founded on threads
“t3” and “t4” within group G2 maps to potential attacks on system K. Data from system J, combined with public info from a
newsgroup (area “a”) and enumeration data (area “2”), leads to rating the exposure as a warning.
Assigning risk to untested systems is often difficult to accept but is valid under certain conditions:
 There is close collaboration between tester and company.
 The company’s security is generally sound (otherwise many trivial vulnerabilities overwhelm analysis).

Final analysis allows extrapolating realistic threat scenarios and vulnerabilities beyond the direct scope of testing,

Every company formats their deliverables differently, ranging from simple reports generated by tools to detailed analyses of
collected information. Some professional service providers categorize vulnerabilities by risk level. When using a value-based
framework, the deliverable provides a comprehensive perspective on security risk within the observed environment.
Purpose and Alignment
The deliverable marks the conclusion of the testing phase of a broader security project and must clearly reflect the goals defined
during planning and align with overall business objectives. It should also meet the company’s expectations, especially when a
specific format is required for internal use.
Content and Scope
While some deliverables are simple outputs from tools, their value depends on the scope and goals of the engagement. The
report need not be excessively long but must connect the content to the reasoning behind the test. If the deliverable is not
properly structured to represent findings aligned with objectives, the organization may struggle to find value or integrate the
results. Remediation can take months or years, so the deliverable should act as a clear roadmap to an effective security posture.
Vulnerability Details and Ranking
At minimum, the report should detail each vulnerability, indicating which were exploited, how, and with what results. It may
also include assumed vulnerabilities based on analysis. Findings are presented in a matrix ranking vulnerabilities according to
specific attributes and business priorities, enabling a clear mapping of recommendations to guide the company’s mitigation
efforts. Although mitigation may not be the least costly or quickest, it should be the most effective considering the company’s
desired security posture and critical risks.
Difficulty and Challenges in Remediation
Recommendations must account for cost, time, and required skill level. For example, upgrading numerous firewalls across
multiple countries within a short timeframe with limited skilled staff represents significant difficulty. Challenges also emerge
when increased collaboration is needed across departments that typically interact infrequently, complicating project
management.
Deliverable Structure
A typical deliverable includes an executive summary, presentation of findings, planning and operational summary, vulnerability
ranking, explanation of processes used, recommendations with a risk-based timeline, exceptions and limitations, final risk
analysis, and a conclusion.

This brief section summarizes the engagement, highlighting key findings and recommendations. It balances positive and
negative results and is designed for executives who require a high-level understanding without technical detail.

Demonstrating Value to Stakeholders
It is paramount to demonstrate value to the main stakeholders, especially those funding the engagement. However, these
stakeholders may not always fully appreciate the technical details that underpin the assessment’s value. Therefore, it is essential
