SECTION A (40 MARKS)

Answer all questions in this section
1. Complex numbers are important to engineering as they help represent complex concepts.
Given the complex numbers Z1 =1− j3, Z2=−2+ j5 and Z3=−3− j4, express the following
expression in the form a+ jb (4 Marks)
𝑍1 𝑍2
𝑍1 + 𝑍2
2. A surveyor measures the angle of elevation of the top of a perpendicular building as 19o.
He moves 120m nearer to the building and finds the angle of elevation is now 47o.
Determine the height of the building. (4 Marks)

3. Solve, by substitution method, the simultaneous equations: (4 Marks)

3x - 2y = 12
x + 3y = -7
4. The differential equation 𝑦 = 3√𝑥 𝑙𝑛 2𝑥 represents the rate of change for the stability of

5. A building technician student was modeling a cube and needed to find the cube root of
12. One of the options for the estimation is the Newton-Raphson method. Find the cube
root of 12 using the Newton-Raphson method assuming x0 = 2.5. (5 Marks)

6. While mixing different components necessary for the building activity, a student
represented the component’s coefficients as a 3 by 3 matrix as shown in matrix A. In order
to find the different figures, he was required to find the inverse of the matrix. Calculate the
inverse of the matrix A by finding its adjoint. (4 Marks)

ii. The winning horses in both the first and second races if there are 10 horses in each
race. (3 Marks)
8. A residential complex is planning to install a septic tank with a trapezium-shaped cross-
section. The tank needs to have capacity to accommodate the wastewater generated by 5
households for a period of 30 days. The average daily water usage per household is 500
liters. The proposed septic tank will have a constant depth of 3 meters, Base length: of 6
meters, Top length: of 10 meters, and Height: of 4 meters. Determine whether the
proposed septic tank will be able to meet the wastewater storage requirements of the
residential complex for 30 days. (4 Marks)

9. Vectors are a fundamental concept while dealing with building angles, shapes, and
directions. Find vector, a, joining points P and Q where point P has coordinates (4, −1, 3)
and point Q has coordinates (2, 5, 0). Also, find |a|, the magnitude of a. (3 Marks)

10. Power series techniques like McLaurin’s series are powerful tools in solving engineering
