DESMOS GUIDE
1. Single Variable Equations
examples –
55
a. 𝑥+6
= 𝑥
2
b. (𝑥 − 2) = 3𝑥 + 34 – square root equation
c. 2 |4 − 𝑥| + 3 |4 − 𝑥| = 25 – absolute value equation
2(𝑥+1) 1
d. 𝑥+5
=1− 𝑥+5
– rational equation
2
e. 4𝑥 − 5𝑥 + 12 = 0 – quadratic equation
f. in the equation above, t is a constant. If the equation has no real
solutions, which of the following could be the value of t? →
replace t in equation with all possible answer choices and see
which does not show any solutions
2. Systems of Equations
→ plug in the equations and note down point of intersection coordinates
→ sometimes, single variable equations can be rewritten as a system of
equations to get solutions
→ if two equations are the same line – infinite solutions
→ if no line shows up – no real solutions
→ infinite solutions and no real solutions could show as the same thing
so try to break up a single variable equation into a system to get the
right answer
3. Systems of Inequalities
→ look at values in respective shaded regions of inequalities
4. Vertex of Quadratics
→ minimum of maximum value
5. Quadratics with one solution
2
example: in the xy-plane, the graph of the equation 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
intersects the line 𝑦 = 𝑐 at exactly one point. what is the value of c?
→ plug quadratic in desmos
→ add c as a slider (rewrite 𝑦 = 𝑐 as 𝑦 = 0𝑥 + 𝑐)
→ bring slider down to quadratic
→ input answer options to make slider touch quadratic
When there’s one intersection or solution between a quadratic and
horizontal line, it's at the vertex.
6. Quadratics with no solutions
→ move the slider/parabola until it no longer touches the quadratic to
find the least possible value
7. Mean and Median
→ type in median/mean (data set)
8. Functions
→ replace constants like m, n, etc with x or y
→ when there’s a sum with a table with function values as options, add
a table on desmos and set the columns as 𝑥 and the function and input
𝑥 values and corresponding values will automatically come
9. Circles
→ put circle in desmos to find out points on it
