Knowledge and best practice in this field are constantly changing. As new research and
experience broaden our understanding, changes in research methods, professional practices,
or medical treatment may become necessary.
Practitioners and researchers must always rely on their own experience and knowledge in
evaluating and using any information, methods, compounds, or experiments described
herein. In using such information or methods they should be mindful of their own safety
and the safety of others, including parties for whom they have a professional responsibility.
With respect to any drug or pharmaceutical products identified, readers are advised to check
the most current information provided (i) on procedures featured or (ii) by the manufacturer
of each product to be administered, to verify the recommended dose or formula, the
method and duration of administration, and contraindications. It is the responsibility of
practitioners, relying on their own experience and knowledge of their patients, to make
diagnoses, to determine dosages and the best treatment for each individual patient, and to
take all appropriate safety precautions.

PREFACE
PET has revolutionized the fields of oncology, cardiology, and neurology. The overwhelming success of
F-18 FDG in clinical use has demonstrated the true power of molecular imaging and has led to additional
regulatory approvals of molecular PET agents for clinical practice, including new tracers that target amyloid
in Alzheimer disease, radiolabeled peptides that target somatostatin receptors on tumors, and radiolabeled
amino acids to image prostate cancer.
These developments have led to a renaissance in nuclear medicine that has changed the way patients
are managed and treated. The highly sensitive F-18 FDG PET is now being augmented by PET tracers
with increased specificity. PET offers physicians an early opportunity to alter therapeutics if they are not
efficacious after a trial period and before adverse effects are evident. As PET research continues, it will
continue to assist in personalized medicine by enabling highly specific therapies, giving patients the best
chance at successful treatment.
Clinicians including nuclear medicine radiologists, radiation oncologists, oncologists, oncology surgeons,
trainees in nuclear medicine and oncology plus researchers in drug development and molecular imaging
need to keep up with existing and emerging PET technologies currently in clinical practice. Specialty Imaging:
PET, first edition is a reference text covering:
The authoring team that developed this text is a group of dedicated nuclear medicine physicians and
radiologists involved in both clinical practice and academic pursuits. Lead authors including myself, Dr.
Paige Bennett, and Dr. Andrew Trout have worked to deliver expertise and case examples in the fields of
neuroimaging, oncology, and pediatrics. In addition, over 30 contributing authors–led by Drs. Brad Perry
and Paula Vergara-Wentland–have generously shared their expertise and case examples inside this book to
bring the reader up-to-date on clinical PET imaging.
