Preceding events

● The king Henry VI. got territories in France (Margaret of Anjou)


● weak ruler, little interest in politics
● mismanagement of power, corruption, heavy taxation, lost the French
territories
● peasant uprising
○ Jack Cade
● quite successful, marched on London
● “Complaint of the poor commons of Kent”
○ involved recalling Richard of York
○ Henry crushed the rebellion
Richard of York

● in 1452 Richard returned to England


● wanted to get rid of Henry’s corrupt advisors (Duke of
Somerset)
● in 1453 Henry became insane
○ Richard as the Lord Protector
● but after is son Edward of Lancaster was born, he “recovered”
(1455)
○ Richard was sent away
The series of battles

● on May 22, 1455, Richard allied with the Earl of Warwick


● the two armies met at St. Albans
○ the Yorks took Henry as a prisoner, Richard as Lord Protector again
● Henry recovered mentally, so Richard raised an army and attacked at Ludford
Bridge
○ Yorks deserted England
● at Northampton Warwick captured the king
○ Richard’s claim to the throne
● Parliament issued the Act of Accord
○ Richard as Henry’s successor
The series of wars

● Richards son Edward, Earl of March succeeded him (1460)


● in March, 1461, Battle of Towton
○ bloodiest one-day battle
● Yorkish victory, Henry fled to Scotland, leaving Edward as king
● After Edward death, his son was proven illegitimate
● his brother Richard III. became the king in 1483
The Tudors
● Richard’s claim to the throne was weak
● the Lancasterian Henry Tudor with the help of France defeated him
at Bosworth in 1485
○ became Henry VI
● He married Elizabeth of York reconciling the rivalring houses
ending the wars of the roses
