Chapter-1 : Computer Networks
EXERCISES

A. Multiple Choice Questions

Ans. 1. (b) 2. (c) 3. (b)

B. Fill in the blanks

Ans. 1. size 2. workstation 3. NIC 4. MAN 5. Star

C. Write full forms of the following

Ans. 1. Network Interface Card
2. Personal Area Network
3. Local Area Network
4. Metropolitan Area Network
5. Wide Area Network
6. Hypertext Transfer Protocol
7. Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
8. Wireless Fidelity

D. Answer the following

Ans. 1. A node is a computer or any other device on a network that communicates with other
devices.
Ans. 2. The way in which the nodes of a network are linked together is called topology.
Ans. 3. A network refers to a group of devices connected to one another, allowing the exchange of
data with each other. Some examples of networks are: Cable networks, television networks
and telephone networks.
Ans. 4. Three benefits of using a network are:
(i) Ease Of Access: The network stores most of the information on a central computer.
Storing information on one or two central computers makes it easy for people to
work with and manage their files.
(ii) Work From Home: The network has dedicated computers that allow people to
connect to the company’s network using a modem.
(iii) Sharing Resources: Computers connected to a network can share equipments
and devices including printers and hard drives. These equipments and devices are
called resources.

Computers-8 Answer Key 1

(iv) Sharing Information: You can use a network to exchange information with other
people. Information can be in any form of data, such as documents created in a
word processing program or information provided by the school database.
(v) Sharing Programs: Most of the people who are connected to a network, use a
central computer to work with different programs such as word processors and
spreadsheets.
(vi) Security: Before accessing information on a network, users must enter a username
and a password. This ensures that only authorised people can use the information
stored on the network.
(Any Three)
Ans. 5.
LAN WAN
(i) It stands for local Area Network. (i) It stands for Wide Area Network.
(ii)
It connects computers and devices (ii) It connects LAN and MAN together.
located close to one another, such as The networks that make up a WAN,
in one building. may be located throughout a country
or even around the world.
Example: Computers connected in an office Example: Internet and ATM facility
Ans. 6. Following are the hardware parts required to establish a network.
(i) MODEM : It is a device used to convert the digital signals into analog signals and
vice versa.
(ii) HUB :  It provides a central connection point for cables from nodes, servers
and peripherals.
(iii) Switch : A Switch also connects computers on a network like hub. But, it sends
the data packets to the intended receiver.
(iv) Router : It is used to forward data packets from the source machine to the
destination machine by using the shortest path.
(v) Gateway : A gateway is a device that connects dissimilar networks.
(vi) Bridge : A network bridge is a computer networking device that creates a single
aggregate network from multiple communication networks.
Ans. 7. (a)

Advantages Of Ring Topology Disadvantages Of Ring Topology
YY It works well where there is no central-site YY It requires more complicated control
computer system. software.
YY It is more reliable than star topology. YY Failure of one node results in the failure of
the entire network.

(c)
Advantages Of Bus Topology Disadvantages Of Bus Topology
YY It is quite easy to set up. YY It offers limited flexibility for change.
YY Failure of one node does not affect the YY A signal on the bus must be strong enough

YY Changes in the network can be done
easily without interrupting other nodes

Ans. 8. Wireless technology involves sending and receiving information over a distance without
using wires or cables,One of the most popular wireless technology is:
Infrared: In infrared wireless technology, data is sent wirelessly over an infrared connection.
It is primarily implemented in short range areas and facilities, more specifically where
there is the least amount of obstruction such as wooden or concrete walls.
Wifi: WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) is a popular technology that allows an electronic device to
exchange data wirelessly over a computer network. A Wi Fi enabled device can connect
to a network resource such as the Internet via a wireless network access point. Such an
access point called hotspot can extend from an area as small as a few room to as large as
many square miles.
