Hi Diana,
How’s it going? I had to write you about global warming. I know it’s not the normal thing we write
each other about, but I just watched this program on TV and it was really scary! It was all about the
environmental (17) ____________ of things which are going on all around the world, and even in our
own country. Did you know that when you burn a fossil (18) ____________ , you put carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere, and that’s one of the things which is causing global warming? I guess you did,
because you’re majoring in science, but a lot of the stuff was new to me.
Do you think that scientists will find a way to remove some of the extra CO2 which we have put into
the atmosphere in the last 50 or 60 years? Do you agree that everybody can help to save the planet if
we do little things like, for example, if we (19) ____________ off lights in a room we are not using, or
an electrical device when we have finished with it? Will that really make a difference to the amount of
emissions, is that what they are called? If so, I’ll start doing it today!
I didn’t understand all of the stuff in the program, but it is clear to me now that we have to make sure
that all our activities are (20) ____________ in future. Otherwise, life on this planet will not be
possible in 50 or 100 years.
Let me know what you think!
Yours,
Emma

It is common to think of generations as being completely different from one another. It is true that
there is nearly always, in every culture and period of history, a generation gap – some differences
between parents and their children. However, people in any generation are human, so the similarities in
behavior across generations are greater than the differences. In addition, people from different
generations who are living in the same culture share so many basic ideas about the world, and about
what matters and what doesn’t.
Different generations can learn from each other. On the one hand, older people have a lot of
experience and knowledge that they can share with younger people. Elderly people, in particular, can
teach young people important lessons learnt during their many more years of living than their children
and grandchildren. They can also give advice on how to face challenges.
On the other hand, younger people can teach older people about modern life. They are growing up in a
world that is extremely different even from the one that their parents experienced. They have an
understanding of new technology, such as the internet and social media, which often causes older
generations some difficulties. If parents ask for advice about these things, the conversations can lead
to better relationships at home and greater respect for their teenager’s knowledge.
Respect is the key thing to remember when we try to bridge the generation gap. Parents must respect
their children’s privacy, particularly when they become teenagers. They must also respect their point
of view on certain issues, even if they feel differently. In turn, teenagers must respect their parents,
even when they don’t give them permission to do something, such as hanging out with friends late at
night. Parents have to look after their children, and their knowledge of the problems of the world is
greater because of the more years which they have lived.
21. What does the writer say about the generation gap in the first paragraph?
A. It has never really existed at all.
B. It used to exist, but it does not now.
C. It is present between each generation in every culture.
D. It is smaller than everyone thinks.
22. In the second paragraph, what does They mean in the last sentence?
A. Older people.
B. Younger people.
C. Children and grandchildren.
D. Elderly people.
23. What does the writer mean by these things in the third paragraph?
A. Conversations between parents and teenagers.
B. Difficulties of the older generation.
C. The internet and social media.
D. Better relationships.
24. What heading could you give to the fourth paragraph?
A. A two-way street.
B. Parents and children.
C. Difficulties of being a teenager.
D. The end of the generation gap.
