ASTROLOGY and the Rising of
KUNDALINI
______________

“. . . completely unravels the effects of mid-life crisis . . . puts astronomy in

a new light, poses interesting questions about our relationship to the rest of
the universe, and provides interesting postulations about the transformations
that occur in humans.”
W HOLE L IFE T IMES

“Astrology and the Rising of Kundalini shows that when we systematically

work with our life energy and the predictable cycles of time to negotiate
midlife, it becomes what nature intended: not a crisis, but a power surge.
Such an insight is more than an intellectual exercise; it’s essential for
healthy development—the only way we can live up to our full potential. In
this groundbreaking book, Barbara Hand Clow offers readers the insights,
the timing, and the tools for making the passage safely, powerfully,
gracefully.”
STEVEN MC FADDEN, ASTROLOGER AND AUTHOR OF P ROFILES IN W ISDOM

“Astrology and the Rising of Kundalini is an extremely important book for

all who wish to turn their potentially turbulent midlife transitions into
opportunities for conscious maturation and productivity. Barbara Hand
Clow’s keen insight not only clarifies key passages in our personal lives,
clearly defining the relationship between astrology and real-life events, she
also provides vital insights into the newly developing paradigm for a

EDITATIONS

“Barbara Hand Clow has identified the hidden key to evolution: the rise of
suprasexual energy experienced as the passion to express our full potential
self through joining in love with others to create. She gives us practical
guidelines to go through our personal midlife crisis to become co-creative
humans, a global species at the next stage of our evolution.”
BARBARA MARX HUBBARD, AUTHOR OF T HE E VOLUTIONARY J OURNEY

Preface to the Fourth Edition

WHEN IT WAS FIRST published in 1991 under the title Liquid Light of
Sex, Astrology and the Rising of Kundalini offered a new hypothesis:
predictable planetary cycles or transits can be used to determine the onset,
progress, and completion of human growth cycles, the most critical one
being midlife crisis. Now, after more than twenty years of feedback in
workshops and countless letters from readers, the time has arrived to assess
the accuracy of this idea. This idea has really worked for people who know
little about astrology, the tool we use to predict our personal growth cycles.
In particular, Astrology and the Rising of Kundalini examines the nature and
timing of kundalini rising —healthy fire that rises in our chakras, or energy
centers in our bodies—a key body dynamic that is activated as we mature
physically and emotionally. The most intense kundalini activation occurs
during midlife crisis in our early forties, and this process is virtually
synonymous with spiritual emergency— extreme anxiety that often occurs
when people process difficult emotional issues.
My hypothesis in this book is the result of observing astrological clients
going through midlife crisis, most of whom exhibited mild to very strong
symptoms of kundalini rising. They were having what is also called
“spiritual emergencies.” Once I became sure this was what was going on
with my clients, I noticed that I could use specific planetary transits to
predict the onset and completion of this very stressful energy activation. I
found ways to help them make the best of this important growth
opportunity, just as you can by using the tables at the end of this book. In
addition to this new preface and updated chapters 8–10, this edition updates
these tables to include those born between 1992 and 2000, because this
group is growing up and needs this information.
In my original preface I discussed the text with cultural historian William
Irwin Thompson and theologian Timothy Sedgwick. I sought their opinion
because I wanted a nonastrological perspective on the possibility that we
can time human growth. Their thoughts have withstood the test of time and
are very provocative now, since my hypothesis has been strongly verified
over the past twenty years. Initially Thompson and Sedgwick were both
deeply skeptical of my idea; however, they were willing to consider it, even
though it essentially challenged the basis of their own ways of thinking. I
did not seek out astrologers, because I knew that if I were right, most
astrologers would just agree with me. They would not tend to challenge the
implications of my hypothesis because they would instantly see the value of
my idea, since they already have experience with observing how planetary
patterns influence human behavior. Astrologers all know that planetary
transits influence human growth passages, so I sought instead good
arguments from nonastrologers to challenge my premise.
Thompson and Sedgwick both have remarkable capacities to consider all
possibilities, so they were able to think about whether there may be
astrological and astronomical influences on human behavior. They were
both intrigued that the astronomer Dr. Percy Seymour had published an
astronomical causal theory for astrological influences and that Dr. Richard
Gerber suggested that the energetic systems of our bodies actually are
stimulated by planetary patterns (see Dr. Gerber’s introduction).
Thompson and Sedgwick are and were both deeply skeptical of
deterministic approaches to human behavior, as am I. Such theories often
result in what Thompson calls “misplaced concreteness,” a tendency to
attribute fixed reasons for things that are inherently speculative, such as
people who say the Fallen Angels in the Hebrew Bible are spacemen. Both
thinkers are highly skeptical of ideas that trample on or reduce the potential
for subtlety in human nature, qualities they value so deeply. Both feel that
narrowing the range of human comprehension about what is possible often
ultimately results in tyranny and delusion. I agree!
Beginning with William Irwin Thompson, the disturbing issue raised by
Astrology and the Rising of Kundalini is that if my central theory is correct
—kundalini energy rises according to the cycles of the planet Uranus,
which triggers a spiritual crisis in all people during their early forties—then
this suggests that all people could attain enlightenment, because kundalini
rising is what triggers enlightenment by means of intense meditation
practices. He notes that kundalini rising may enable some humans to attain
mystical attunement, yet he points out that kundalini rising does not
necessarily accomplish enlightenment. To him, such a state of being cannot
exist without compassion and the opening of the heart, and I totally agree
with him.
My finding that everybody experiences kundalini rising during midlife
crisis presents similar difficulties for any person who has used Eastern
meditation practices, such as kundalini yoga, to attain enlightenment. Until
this book was published in 1991, Eastern spiritual teachers taught that
kundalini rising can only be attained by practicing intense yogic asanas and
breathing techniques; only a few practitioners might attain enlightenment,
which is the full opening of the heart. I was worried that people schooled in
Eastern meditation might accuse me of blasphemy. So I’ve emphasized the
point that kundalini rising in the masses is a stressful experience that
requires guidance; it is not an easy path to enlightenment. I describe in
detail the widely reported stress symptoms of kundalini rising during
midlife crisis and show they are the same as the spiritual emergency
symptoms. Both midlife crisis and spiritual emergency trigger a cascading
series of problems for people as they struggle to save their marriages, and
even their homes and jobs.
What about enlightenment for the masses? Well, if you are actively
seeking to open your heart and achieve bliss, you are more likely to
accomplish this if you successfully navigate through your midlife crisis. To
be truthful, kundalini rising during midlife crisis usually does not result in
enlightenment for most people; it just causes intense stress. The
physiological and emotional symptoms of midlife crisis are exactly the
same as the symptoms of kundalini rising described by people using Eastern
practices to intentionally activate kundalini rising. Therefore therapists
helping clients with midlife crisis can draw on the extensive sources on
spiritual emergency for advice—including, of course, those offered in this
book. One of the great joys for me since this book came out is that I’ve
heard from many therapists who use this book and have given it or loaned it
to their clients.
The spiritual emergency literature is extensive, because many people in
the West activated their kundalini by meditating with Eastern gurus starting
in the 1960s. Many experienced spiritual emergency and even psychosis,
which also can happen during midlife crisis. This is why my therapeutic
recommendations for help with too-much-fire-energy abound in this book.
Dubious energy experimentations with gurus were going on all around me
during the 1980s. I discovered in my practice that most people benefit by
processing midlife crisis as a spiritual emergency, rather than reducing it to
just an aging, health, or relationship crisis. Now, after twenty years of
feedback from people who have used the advice in this book, I am so happy
I wrote it. People have thanked me for giving them tools to save their
marriages and their basic health, which has helped open my heart!
Back to our question about mass enlightenment, maybe the agenda of our
times is the enlightenment of many people so they can guide us during our
critical evolutionary leap, an idea I discuss extensively in many of my other
books. If we need enlightened guides to help us eliminate ecocidal behavior,
then perhaps this book will be a good resource for some people. We know
that compassion seems to flower in people who integrate the spiritual fire
and then consciously direct the divine elixir—kundalini—to open their
hearts. Chapter 7 offers advice on enlightenment processes that utilize the
potent healing powers of Chiron, a small body orbiting between Saturn and
Uranus. My Chiron book— Chiron: Rainbow Bridge between the Inner and
Outer Planets (1987)—posits that Chiron’s discovery in 1977 heralded the
mass awakening of our species. Hopefully Astrology and the Rising of
Kundalini can help people personally handle the intensity of this mass
awakening.
Now on to Timothy Sedgwick, who wondered whether I even understood
the implications of what I was saying, which made me chuckle. I assured
him that I was well aware that if we can “time” human growth processes
and identify their energetic causal basis, this could open humanity to a new
form of behavioral analysis that could be dangerous. Then we went on to
intelligently discuss the positive implications of this theory. For example,
maturation could be consciously directed if personal and family disruptions
were reduced as much as possible while an individual changes and expands
his or her consciousness. If many people could grow and expand more
easily and safely, society as a whole would improve.
These critical questions arose in my discussion with Sedgwick: (1) Will
this idea foster a herd mentality and make humans into sheep who
predictably get stuck or grow at specified times? (2) If it is possible to
understand the human as this theory posits, then once the knowledge in this
book is integrated, will we go beyond the conflicts and problems existing
now that must be due to previously misunderstood causes? (3) Does not the
